Synopsis

Are you trapped in a gilded cage of your own making? Successful, but not necessarily fulfilled? Stuck, but not sure why or how to get unstuck?

Your life looks fantastic on paper. You’re making money, have a career, family, lifestyle, etc. that you thought you always wanted. But now you’re there and it’s not all you expected it to be.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone.

But where do you begin? You want life to be better, but you don’t know *how* to make it better. The Discomfort Zone: Embrace the Uncomfortable, Do the Deep Work, and Create the Life You Are Here to Live provides the reader with the tools, mindset and process to do the deep emotional work, get clarity, and create the life that is truly aligned to them.

A dismal 1 out of 3 people reports feeling happy with their lives. And what does happiness mean anyway? Is it fulfillment? What does fulfillment mean? Is your definition the same as the person next to you?

To have something you’ve never had, you have to be willing to do something you’ve never done.

You need the tools and process to determine what fulfillment means to you. The Discomfort Zone guides you through four major themes of personal development:

·         Clarity regarding your baseline – how you’ve been programmed to operate and how to identify the limiting beliefs and outdated mindset that holds you back

·         What drives you – achievement-oriented focus largely defined by outside factors rather than internal drivers

·         How to leave behind outdated programming and make space for the new, updated mindset that will take you to the next level of operation

·         Taking inspired action and committing to the vision you have created for your life

A former corporate career professional, Maki Moussavi grew up in midwestern small-town America, a first-generation citizen born to immigrants. Her early life was filled with messages of hard work, chasing the dream, getting the degrees, and making the money. After creating the “success” that she’d been taught to value, she found herself questioning how the hell she ended up feeling stuck, restless and unfulfilled. An avid consumer of self-help, she found that the literature available, while helpful in the pursuit of personal betterment, didn’t quite get her to where she needed to be. She discovered the key to deep and rapid transformation is a willingness to do the uncomfortable self-examination and commit to raising the bar of expectation in pursuit of thriving rather than surviving.

OUTLINE:

INTRODUCTION

Maki welcomes the reader to her world by explaining how she, for so many years, tried various available methods in her personal quest for fulfilment, including therapy in early adulthood then serial attempts at reading and incorporating advice from self-help books, only to find her enthusiasm at getting after said quest would wane after a time because well, change is always easier said than done. She shares her discovery of the key to unlocking transformative energy: a willingness to get uncomfortable, go back to the beginning, and determine how you came to be who you are so you can move forward with clarity about what has been holding you back. After many years of riding the discomfort train, she decided it was time to help others create rapid transformation by ditching her lucrative corporate paycheck and becoming a transformational coach.

CHAPTER 1: You’ve Been Programmed

In this chapter, the reader is exposed to the various influences at work that contribute to how they got to where they are today. Maki shares how the early years of her life set the tone and programming of the baggage she carried through life until she decided it was time to set it down. Through the telling of her own story, she shows the reader the extent to which we internalize early experiences, the subtle messages and meanings of those experiences, how we translate them into expectations for how we operate and fall dangerously into autopilot mode, barely – or not at all – aware of what’s driving us.

CHAPTER 2: Toxic Fumes

Ah, toxicity. The subtle poison that we can continue to breathe in, unaware of its massive impact on every aspect of our lives. The author reveals her very personal experience with personality disorder and abuse in order to help readers gain awareness on what to look for in their relationships with others. Identification of toxic behavior they are tolerating (and therefore attracting!) and how it impacts their relationships with others, personally and professionally, is an essential factor in true empowerment that the reader will clearly grasp by the end of this chapter.

CHAPTER 3: Rinse and Repeat

Mental chatter and thought patterns love to repeat themselves. Much of the time, people aren’t even tuned in to what all that chatter is saying, whose voice is in their heads, or if what those relentless voices have to say is even true. Maki explains the power of the pattern, how to break the ones that aren’t working and create new, positive mental chatter that serves rather than sabotages.

CHAPTER 4: Break the Chains

It’s time for the reader to start determining their value from the inside rather than the outside. Detaching from what others think, the need for validation, reactions to criticism, etc. ad nauseum, is a bitch – one of the toughest aspects of personal development, for sure. The author takes what the reader has learned in the first few chapters and starts laying the groundwork for giving zero fucks about what others think they should be doing, saying, and being as the first, giant action step into empowerment.

CHAPTER 5: To Achieve or Not to Achieve

Now that the reader understands and is maybe flipping out about the extent of their programming, the next step is to discover how all that programming has created their default mode of operation. In our achievement-oriented society, there is heavy focus on tangible success. People set measurable goals with the assumption that the intangibles, e.g. the feelings they are chasing, will magically appear when they reach said goals. The fallacy is that the intangibles of how they want to FEEL are completely ignored in favor of broadly accepted and programmed definitions of success. The author shares her story of corporate success and how she ultimately walked away after redefining success internally rather than continuing to do what was expected. Exercises at the end of the chapter will help the reader begin their own examination of how they have been measuring success, where it has fallen short, and how to start redefining it for themselves.

CHAPTER 6: How Fear Has Made You Its Bitch

Fear is The Virus that infects our operating systems. Maki shares how fear was deeply ingrained in her from infancy and how the battle to keep it from ruling her life has been a lifelong pursuit. She guides the reader to consider how and when fear shows up for them, how to determine whether the fear is real or imagined, how to proceed despite fear and how to confront its relentless appearance over time.

CHAPTER 7: The Illusions That Drive You

Maki shares with the reader her theory that there are three key illusions fueled by fear that drive us: failure, loss, and control. To illustrate, she relates her story regarding an unexpected and traumatic end to a pregnancy in which loss, lack of control and failure are the central themes of her grief. With time and willing self-examination, she was able to determine that there was deep meaning and significance attached to this event that strengthened her faith in herself. Maki guides the reader to identify examples from their own lives to revisit and to how to reframe their perspective to one that serves them on their transformative journey rather than allowing them to keep stagnating.

CHAPTER 8: Don’t Just Pray. ROW the boat.

The reader learns (or is reminded or is jarred into awareness) that they are the creator of their own life. In this chapter, Maki breaks down the ways in which people give their power away by slipping into victim mindset, shows the reader how to wake up to the ways in which this mindset is showing up in their lives, and guides them into an empowered position, from which they can take an active role in creating what they want from a powerful place of exercising choice according to their own desires.

CHAPTER 9: Anger and Other Not Awesome Motivators.

We learn to operate in some pretty shitty, unproductive ways over the course of our lives. Maki’s reaction to the programming and circumstances of early life was to be really pissed off. All the time. For a long time. Though anger has its place and the goal of life is not be void of difficult emotions, it is not in our best interest to operate from a place of high piss-off, judgment, jealousy, greed, and other low vibe feelings, even if these same low vibe emotions have acted as drivers to creating “success.” This chapter addresses these emotions, how they can be useful when reframed to a more positive mindset, and how to replace them with high vibe motivators.

CHAPTER 10: What Are You Worth?

Time to get to the true heart of the matter: What does the dear reader believe they are worth? What is their value? Chances are that their sense of value and self-worth is tied up in the tangible aspects of the life they have created. Their image, social status, material possessions, and earnings are all common measuring sticks for success, even when all too many people are aware that none of this creates a sense of fulfillment. Maki helps readers shift their perspective on how they determine their value and what true success means to them, dropping the BS frameworks for what they’ve been taught to value.

CHAPTER 11: Throwing Out the Baby with the Bathwater

Examination of one’s life can lead to some not so flattering discoveries about the people who raised us and that we surround ourselves with. No one is perfect, but rarely do people suck in totality. This chapter covers sorting the wheat from the chaff when it comes to discarding the beliefs and mindset that don’t work in your favor while recognizing that even in the most trying of relationships and pain-in-our-ass people, there are positive things worth recognizing and holding onto.

CHAPTER 12: Your Feelings Are Your Compass

“Don’t make an emotional decision,” “Leave emotions out of this,” “Don’t get emotionally involved” and other collective conscious horseshit we’ve been wading around in our entire lives are total, well, horseshit. We dismiss emotions as evil obstacles, to be ignored and stuffed down, then wonder why the hell life doesn’t *feel* the way we want it to. In this chapter, the reader learns how to tap into feelings and use them as a guide for how aligned to their true self they are at any given time. Exercises will lead the reader through recalling when in the past they have either dismissed their feelings/intuition to their own detriment, or when they honored their feelings/intuition and it paid off. The aim of this chapter is for the reader to establish trust with themselves and their ability to make the right moves for them in a given situation.

CHAPTER 13: What About Your Friends?

Sometimes the people we surround ourselves with keep us stuck, even when we don’t recognize it. Maki takes the reader through the ways in which hanging out with people who’ve made a habit of complaining, blaming, and low-expectationing affects them. The answer is not necessarily to ditch said people, but it is time to tune in and pay attention to the feelings and messages hanging out with this crowd creates. She provides plenty of ideas for how to find and make new friends more aligned to where they’re going than where they’ve been.

CHAPTER 14: Stay in Your Lane

As a recovering judge-y judger, Maki knows how hard it is to stop thinking and talking about the terrible decisions other people make. This is bad for many reasons, not the least of which is that it’s none of the readers’ business how others may or may be effing themselves through their thinking and actions. The author shows the reader how to appreciate and respect the journey that each individual is on without being consumed or distracted by them.  The dear reader should focus on their own journey and how to lead by example.

CHAPTER 15: The Dangerous Allure of Conditions

Excuses, excuses. How often is the reader using conditions as a reason not to do something? Conditions like “Oh, I’m too stressed at work to try to start eating better now” and “I can’t have that talk with my husband until after this project is over because I’m too busy” or one of the author’s favorites “I’m too busy to (fill in the blank)” etc., etc. Conditional thinking is the rationalization of delaying or avoiding something that the reader is feeling intimidated by or unready to take on. There’s no such thing as the “right time;” the time is now and the conditions are what the reader makes of them.

CHAPTER 16: Show Up and Use Your Words, FFS.

No more hiding and putting the needs of others first. This chapter gives the reader the tools they need in order to become aware of what they are saying to themselves or doing in interaction with others that is putting them second. They will learn to identify when there is a mismatch between who they are/what they want and others’ expectations. The reader will also identify how they are putting others ahead of themselves in patterns of conflict avoidance. The reader cannot control the reactions of others, only how they deliver their message. It’s of the utmost importance to learn to use one’s voice to live a truly empowered life.

CHAPTER 17: See It. Feel It.

No more letting the chips fall where they may. The time for letting “what’s meant to be” is over. Life will not magically hand over awesomeness when the reader doesn’t even know what awesomeness means to them. It’s time for the reader to drop the framework of how they have operated until today and FEEL their way into the life they want. Idealization is what’s called for. Most people walk around with exceedingly and depressingly low expectations for their lives. Nope. It’s time to raise the bar and have the courage to dream big. Maki provides guidance and exercises to begin creating their ideal vision and how to manage fear and uncertainty as it shows up to keep them safe and stuck.

CHAPTER 18: Tenacious Is Your New Middle Name

There are no rainbow stickers and pats on the head for a job well done here. In order to realize that big, beautiful vision, the reader has to be ready to get seriously uncomfortable. F*ck motivation. This requires Commitment. Real life examples of those who committed unwaveringly to achieve huge things will be used to illustrate the commitment and tenacity required.

CHAPTER 19: Trust the Process

No matter what their spiritual beliefs, Maki reassures the reader that there are invisible forces supporting their journey. Suspension of disbelief and detachment from the “how” and illusion of control are essential to making their vision a reality. Be the mountain goat. One step at a time, look at what is directly in front of them and be okay with not knowing what’s around the bend. A new perspective is required, one in which the reader reminds him/herself that if they are open, trust the process and make decisions aligned to their true selves, the possibilities are beyond what they can even imagine. Know, see, and FEEL the vision. Let go of the how, when, where and take it one step at a time.

CHAPTER 20: Who Cares, Anyway?

Yes, it’s all about the reader, because without this work they can’t show up for others. Maki conveys her belief that we are all here to be of service. Got kids? Got causes? This chapter is about finding what’s close to the reader’s heart that they can impact by showing up as the best version of themselves. Life is about experience, growth, expansion, abundance. We are fortunate to be living in a time and place where we can thrive, not just survive. Many others all over the world are not so fortunate. How can we show up for them and make the planet a better place? By being our best.

Audience

According to industry research, the self-help industry is valued at $9.9 billion dollars per year and expected to grow at a rate of over 5% for the next five years. The personal coaching industry in particular is the second fastest growing industry worldwide. People are hungry for information and guidance about how to improve their lives in various areas, and the continued growth of the industry shows there is no shortage of interest in consuming different perspectives on just how to do all that self-improving.

The challenge may be that while much of self-improvement lit has broad appeal, there are those who continue to feel the books aren’t speaking to them and their pain sufficiently.

Research shows that 96% of people who try self-development fail. This is not surprising when you consider that a strong bias toward action is required to actually do the work of making the improvements. While there is plenty of information about how to raise self-awareness, if there is no process to follow, the reader doesn’t necessarily know how or where to begin.

Enter The Discomfort Zone: Embrace the Uncomfortable, Do the Deep Work, and Create the Life You Are Here to Live. This book is targeted for the high-achievers who have created material success yet feel as if they are stuck or stagnant in one or more areas of life. Members of this group are plentiful, according to statistics that show less than 50% are happy in their jobs and that there is an inverse relationship between earnings and stress levels. The more you earn, the more stress you have. And why is that?

For many, success has created a trap of their own making.  The programming that created the success is now holding them hostage, and they feel as if the risks of escape are too high to even consider. Everything they’ve been taught is that they should stick with stability, minimize risk, be grateful for what they have because they are “fine” and “okay.” They don’t know how to scale their perspective to take life to the next level, so they stay in the hamster wheel, exhausted and panting but too afraid to step out of it.

The training and education high-achievers get is how to be more of something related to their careers. How to build lucrative relationships, sell, 10x their goals, e.g. ACHIEVE. This group is fed reading lists about how to improve corporate culture, find their strengths, and complete personality assessments in order to create even more success as defined by their particular industry. If they do venture into the category of self-help, they find that much of this genre is geared toward or written by entrepreneurs or creatives whose language speaks to their audience but may not align with this one.

The Discomfort Zone understands and speaks the language of the corporate high-achiever, but also provides a process and tools to help avid self-helper who has tried and not quite made it to the level of personal development they hoped to achieve.

Promotion

Maki is committed to promoting the heck out of The Discomfort Zone. She is creating a robust local and online presence, and will use all of her relationships, connections and tenacity to promote the book, including:

·         Dedicate an area of makimoussavi.com to The Discomfort Zone, offering not only an online media kit, reviews and excerpts, but additional “bonus” content for the book as well. Bonus content will include things like transcripts or podcasts of interviews with experts, links to websites for further exploration, and the ability for readers to submit their own queries with respect to the discomfort of transformation, with a new query answered every week.

·         Share and publicize the book through promotion for her online course.

·         Blog the development, writing and publishing of the book at Maki’s blog to build up pre-publication interest, as well as create a Facebook page for the book.

·         The author will leverage her contracted marketing consultant with expertise in positioning/branding via social media to create an organized and aggressive campaign.

·         Solicit her personal contacts at Her Life Magazine, The Scout Guide, Central Exchange and Better Kansas City for interviews.

·         On publication, the author will give talks and do publicity in the following 15 markets: Kansas City, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Miami, Seattle, San Francisco, Minneapolis, Atlanta, Washington DC, Boston, Houston, Portland.

Competition

With so many well-written self-help books on the market, why bother to write one more? Few books speak directly to the high-achiever who has the status, money and success they hoped for yet remains unfulfilled by all the material success. Through the raw and personal stories of the author combined with powerful guidance on how to overcome even the toughest of mindset challenges, The Discomfort Zone offers a brazen and unapologetic approach to personal transformation.

You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life by Jen Sincero (Perseus Books, 2013)

The highly entertaining Jen Sincero delivers her self-help message through funny personal anecdotes, colorful language and gentle encouragement in You Are a Badass. The Discomfort Zone also uses personal anecdotes and bold language to take readers on a journey of self-discovery, but the tone is more straightforward and the conviction of the author inspires readers to action in a different way. Geared toward those who have “made it” versus those who have struggled to monetize their talent, the book targets a successful audience that is typically told how to do more of something that keeps them hustling and grinding (Sell! Be a leader! Climb the ladder!) rather than shed outdated frameworks that no longer serve them.

The War of Art by Steven Pressfield (Black Irish Entertainment 2012)

In his book The War of Art, Pressfield delivers a compelling message about overcoming blocks in order to take your art, project, business or craft to the next level. Pressfield’s focus is on overcoming Resistance (fear), particularly with respect to the creative process. The Discomfort Zone also addresses fear as a major challenge to true self-realization, but in all areas of life beyond creative endeavors. Where Pressfield uses historical and cultural data to drive home the impact of fear, The Discomfort Zone uses the author’s personal experiences with overcoming fear as a driving force to inspire readers to do the same. The raw and vulnerable nature of these personal stories make the author relatable to the audience, showing them that people aren’t just born having their shit together and they, too, can overcome if they apply themselves accordingly.

UnFu*k Yourself by Gary John Bishop (HarperOne 2017)

One of a number of self-help books with the refreshing Fu*k included in the title, Bishop is all about commitment to destroying limiting beliefs that keep people stuck. UnFu*k Yourself provides mantras and affirmations to help create an updated, positive way of speaking to oneself that inspires empowerment. The Discomfort Zone also provides tools and guidance to change self-perception, but the emphasis is first on understanding the “why” behind why the reader is stuck in negative patterns and programming. Understanding how they came to be is the key to staying self-aware, so that once they recognize the old and busted ways of thinking, they can move forward with the new hotness ways of thinking and shut down any tendencies to revert in the future.

The Universe Has Your Back: Transform Fear Into Faith by Gabrielle Bernstein (Hay House, Inc. 2016)

Popular among spiritual self-helpers, in Bernstein’s book based on A Course in Miracles, her focus in on transforming fear into faith in order to help readers live a divinely guided life through provided lessons. And while it, like The Discomfort Zone, addresses fear as a critical element of the self-development journey, its often light tone doesn’t deliver the same impact to changing conscious understanding of fear that Discomfort Zone does. Both books teach readers how to create the aligned life they dream of, but The Discomfort Zone takes the reader through the process of updating their programmed ways of thinking to create lasting transformation.

The Gift of Imperfection: Let Go of Who You Think You’re Supposed to Be and Embrace Who You Are  by Brene´ Brown (Hazelden Publishing 2010)

Brown addresses the core of what each of us seeks – a sense of worthiness that comes from simply being who we are. In her book The Gift of Imperfection, Brown uses a series of guideposts to look at how life teaches us to view ourselves through the lenses of others, rather than knowing that at our cores, accepted by others or not, we are worthy simply because we are. The Discomfort Zone delivers a similar message, but with an edgier tone and more concrete tips and exercises on how to tackle each of the areas standing between the reader and their abundantly brazen life.

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson (Harper 2016)

What else is there to say? The Subtle Art uses the king of language, sarcasm and humor the author of The Discomfort Zone finds truly delicious. The two books have a similar premise, that it’s time to stop being so damn worried about what everyone else thinks, but DZ delves deeper into the question of “why are you the way you are?” so that readers can identify and throw out what doesn’t work, embrace what does, and get to work on living a fulfilled life, already. Where Manson encourages people to accept their limitations, The Discomfort Zone encourages readers to embrace what makes them awesome and spend less time worrying about so-called weaknesses.

Maki, I enjoyed your presentation today and would like to speak with you about private sessions and their cost.
Also, you mentioned you had been a genetic counselor. Do you know Amy Strauss Tranin? She helped me in 1994 after I was diagnosed with Stage IV, Inflammatory Breast disease with my decision to try and have a child or not. She was wonderful and I have a deep appreciation for that line of work, although, we had to create a manual family tree....it was prior to genetic testing!
Anyway, looking forward to speaking with you.

I am so sorry it's taken me so long to get this done! After we met I went to Texas to spend my mom's birthday with her. I received your email and your voice message--sorry I haven't responded. You have been on my mind though! Best of luck, girl. I KNOW that you are going to surpass your goal!! SO excited for you!
