Synopsis

1933. A bomb brings down an airliner over the United States. Eight decades later, the bombing is still a mystery. Then a man walks into the office of private investigator, Andrew Stone, and tells Stone that he needs to uncover the truth to prevent another World War.

Andrew Stone, former CIA operative turned private investigator, left the Agency after a career of being deep undercover. He was diagnosed with PTSD, but in reality he suffers from Death Anxiety. Unable to function in dangerous situations, he is also incapable, or perhaps unwilling, to cultivate any relationships. The one relationship he does have is with another former CIA colleague, Nicola Sage, but even that is on the end of a phone and never in person.

Stone's past live as a CIA operative is both a blessing and a curse. His skills are "unusual" but his ability to use them has been reduced through a phycological illness, so he seeks out the quiet life as a private detective in a small town - as far away from his past life as he can get.

Stone, however, is approached by a mysterious older gentleman. The man recounts the details of an airliner crash in the United States in 1933 and his claim that it is tied to Hitler coming to power in Germany. Not only that, it is also linked to a plot to assassinate a world leader at the upcoming G8 conference. Stone is less than convinced, but circumstances take him deep undercover into a dark, secretive organization connected to the planned assassination. In the meantime, the key to the entire affair lies in solving the 1933 bombing.

Allan L Mann is an exciting author of crime and thriller fiction. With over 30 years experience in the aviation industry, he has been involved in many aspects from flying everything from hot air balloons to airliners and multi-million dollar corporate jets. His love of fiction writing, coupled with that of history has led him to the point of researching, and now telling, the lesser known mysteries of aviation through this new thriller series. As an aviation industry thought leader, presenter and advocate, Allan is well suited to sharing these stories in a compelling fashion.

Wings of the Black Eagle is currently the first in a series of aviation themed thrillers featuring Andrew Stone.

Outline

The idea for this new Andrew Stone thriller series came about when searching for new story lines for Allan's current crime fiction series. Being an aviation professional, the story of United Airlines Trip 23 was one that sparked interest right away.

The real life drama that is United 23 took place in October 1933. It was the first ever recorded case of air terrorism in commercial aviation history. The FBO quickly determined that a bomb had brought down the Boeing 247 airliner. It remains unsolved to this day. The story immediately lends itself to becoming the baseline for one of two plot lines that run through Wings of the Black Eagle.

The story of the hero, Andrew Stone, also touches on the stigma around mental illness, alienation, the cost of standing up for truth.

Audience

Readers who enjoy the thrillers of James Patterson, Lee Child, Ken Follett will be the primary audience. In particular, those with interests in aviation, aviation history, WWIII, and modern detective thrillers. The format of the parallel story lines helps to keep the action fast-paced.

Promotion

Promotion will take place through the author website, as well as various social media outlets, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc., as well as a new audio podcast.

Competition

John Milton Series by Mark Dawson, self-published.
Zero Day by David Baldacci, Vision, 2012
The Unlikely Spy by Daniel Silva,
The Key to Rebecca by Ken Follett, Penguin, 2003
Bullseye by James Patterson. Little, Brown and Company, 2016

In all of the titles above, there is a thread of undercover/spy drama. What sets Wings of the Black Eagle apart are the two stories running parallel, 80 years apart. The WWII fans will love the action and intrigue of the action running up to the beginning of the war. Aviation fans will be intrigued on my take on the true story of the bombing of the Boeing 247. Thriller fans will enjoy the modern day, undercover plot to foil WWIII.

Why is this story different? My background in both the military and aviation will lend a veracity to the details. Two stories in one! This story leads into a second in the same vein - a parallel mystery based on a true aircraft accident.

I'm not sure that's been done before.

Allan L Mann

About the author

Allan's professional flying career started as a pilot in the Royal Air Force and has spanned over thirty years, including hot air balloons, airliners, small training aircraft, and large business jets. He is a leading figure in the business aviation community in the United States and continues to work with both industry and government leaders to formulate a safer aviation environment.

Allan is an avid reader of historical non-fiction and Scottish crime fiction and counts Ian Rankin, Val McDermid, Stuart MacBride, Quintin Jardine, Allan Guthrie and Ed James among his influences. Who wouldn't?

His experience serves to bring a reality to his writing, with both the people and places populating his books based on real events and locations.

Virtualbookworm Publishing

Virtualbookworm (VBW) Publishing was founded by a writer frustrated by the long wait time and occasional heartbreak often associated with the publishing industry. After researching the various "alternatives," he discovered a number of subsidy publishers that would publish any author ... for a price. Unfortunately, many reviewers (and readers) thumb their noses at books from such houses, since all it takes is cash to get published by them.

Then he discovered self publishing and the endless opportunities it presented. However, such a venture requires countless hours of research of printers, proofreaders, artists, etc. And after publication, even more time is consumed trying to market the book.

So, Virtualbookworm.com was established as a "clearinghouse" for authors, since it offers virtually everything under one roof. Although we now charge setup and design fees, those costs are kept to a minimum so as to cover all expenses. And, as with "traditional" publishers, we carefully review each manuscript and only offer contracts to authors who truly have exceptional manuscripts. We don't print garbage, and we want our authors to proudly say they were published by Virtualbookworm. If we accept your book for publication, you can rest assured that it will be sold next to other quality books, and not just work that had enough money behind it. And, you'll receive some of the best royalties in the business!

Since our initial costs are so low, we want your books to sell as much as you do.
