Acting Breakthrough - Your Blueprint to Success is a book to help any aspiring actor/actress to become a professional and make a living.
I was working 9-5 after a breakdown of my relationship in East Sussex. I decided to move back to London where I was reunited with an old friend. I started working in his business and again I was now doing the 9-5, but this time only supporting myself. I couldn't imagine going through the grind and living just for the weekend. I decided to pursue acting based on my experience at school (this was many many years before). It seemed like a good branch to grab onto at the time. That was my "why", I left my secure job to pursue a uncertain career in acting.
There are no books I have seen that outline strategies and experiences on how to become an actor with or without going to drama school. A lot of people come to me with the idea of becoming an actor, but they have no idea how to start. There are a lot of people just carrying around a dream without realising the sacrifices needed to make it happen. I highlight this in the book so my readers can really make an informed decision. If they really want to pursue it or let go of this dream, and to allow them to move on to a dream that is a better fit for them.
If they are really serious about jumping into this industry, I make it clear there is a lot to work out and understand. I lay it out simply with easy to understand strategies that can be applied so they can keep moving forward and to not feel demotivated and lost.
Initially, I was writing the script for an online course. I decided to abandon this so I could focus on my coaching and speaking business. What was left was a skeleton proof of what is now Acting Breakthrough. I worked on filling it out, to have a book to help anyone looking to do what I did. They can save themselves time, money and heartache by modelling themselves on me.
This book has chapters and modules. To put it to best use, I would start from top to bottom (like most books....) However, it really comes down to how my readers feel it would work best for them. They may already be an actor and so they can skip certain sections, wherever they are in their journey, it will have something for all.
I believe they will get a lot out of this book and I really want to reach people who may have given up on this dream and to see that it is achievable. I also want them to know that there are sacrifices that have to be made and I outline what those are so nothing comes as a surprise.
How I break down this industry is how I believe it will be best for them to not feel overwhelmed so they can take full on action.
Firstly, I ask the "why"! If they know why, then the how will come. I also coach them with specific questions so they will know if this is truly what they want before they invest anymore time and money in this venture.
Once they have made the decision to move forward, it is time to get out there straight away. I show them how to do this with an online profile.
When they have done this we lead on to chapters on how to shoot a showreel, there are several ways to do this. I list them and show the pros and cons on each.
I list the chapters from getting an audition (what to do when you get one), levels of acting training (what you feel would be the right option for you in your current situation), how to get an agent (email templates and how best to attract them), voice over (highly paid and how to get heard to earn) with other chapters focusing on all areas so you don't miss out on anything.
This book really is for anyone wanting to pursue acting, there are several reasons why so many people want get on stage or screen, I work on their reason to find their why. It's a huge market. The majority of us grew up watching some form of entertainment and so early on we have been influenced and have a need to express our creativity.
Instead of wondering, I want this book to help many people to know that they can do this if they decide to really go for it. It doesn't matter where they are in life, as examples have shown, Adeline De Walt Reynolds was 78 when she started, plus many more. Whether you think you can or you can't you are probably right!
As a coach I wanted to help with the mindset needed to go into this industry, something I wished I had given to me before starting out. How to deal with rejection being a big part! I go into this in more detail, it is a large part of why so many give up early on.
I can see this book being used in Drama institutions around the world, for bespoke drama schools, for aspiring actors on acting websites. There are so many places to advertise this book.
The Independent ran a survey that showed just 1 in 50 actors earned over £20,000. I believe a lot of actors are leaving a lot of opportunities on the table and so I want to highlight where and how they can become the 1 not the 49.
Having this book will save you a lot. I also include financial strategies to help you have a lifestyle whilst pursuing this unique and extremely rewarding industry.

From my experience starting out in acting, I was an extra for a little while and there were so many aspiring actors, in the 1000's wanting to act, yet they were stuck between the illusion of being on set thinking they were acting rather than figuring out how to actually do it. I saw this as an opportunity to help these people because they were stuck. I am also aware of how many people join acting sites like Casting Call Pro and Mandy as examples who have little or no experience. This is just in the UK alone, we are talking over 100,000 people. This globally goes into the millions.
The market is huge, a lot of people I meet personally tell me they wanted to be an actor and now they are doing some job they despise.

A little bit about me…...
I have been a working actor for over 5 years.
It’s been a rollercoaster ride of getting accustomed to acting and learning a skill that I didn't get through drama school. I had to convince myself that I was an actor before I had done any acting!!
In my childhood I would use my imagination to take myself into strange and wonderful worlds to escape reality. I soon found that I was pretty good at being someone else. I did the school plays and attended some after school acting classes and did reasonably well. I was often approached by child acting agents.
I dismissed these opportunities based on my own limited beliefs that I had already picked up at such a young age. It has taken me years to identify and learn the strategies to shift them.
I worked many different jobs (trained chef, volunteering in Tanzania, health clubs, running a promotional night club business with friends for “VIP” clubs in London, owning a party bus business and becoming an IT recruitment consultant. I did so much in a short period of time that I lost my way and like most people I was just living for the weekends.
At this point in my life I was living in a small town called Tunbridge Wells in the South of England when my life shifted in a very abrupt way. I decided to move back to London and reconnect with my friends that I once had a nightclub business with.
One of my friend’s at the time was directing a film called “The Hothouse” about a group of people living in a house with entwined relationships.
