This book is targeted at a very specific niche reader:  The woman over 50 who is determined not to be overlooked, professionally or personally. The reader is part of a massive demographic – born between 1946 and 1964 – the ‘baby boomer’ generation, renowned for the characteristics that make successful entrepreneurs.

This demographic faces unprecedented challenges as well as opportunities not just to survive but to thrive, make the most of the ‘bonus round’ and become a dominant force in, and contributor to, society.

Statistically this market is huge

·      Whilst not every country in the world experienced the baby boomer phenomenon it is a huge demographic bulge, often referred to as the ‘pig in the python’ – a massive segment of the population estimated at around 1.1  billion. 15% of the world’s population. Women make up just under 50% of this 15%.

·      The biggest trend in new startups is the over 55s

·      ‘Olderpreneurs’ currently make up a 5th of Britain’s new business owners

·      Barclay’s Bank recently reported a 67% increase in women over 55 opening business bank accounts

·      Over 50s account for 43% of those who start their own businesses – in the workplace they are much rarer – less than a third of employees are over 50

·      Businesses set up by the over 50s are more likely to still be trading  five years later than those by established by younger age groups (70% compared to 28%)

·      Once the children have left home, the ground for women begins to shift to entrepreneurialism and the need to do ‘something for self’

·      Everywhere you look there are success stories of the over 50 female entrepreneur

What is also unique about women over 50 is not just the positive and negative drivers described in the Synopsis; it’s also the desire to learn with and from their contemporaries.
