About the author

Liesl Hays is an entrepreneur, writer, mom, wife and self-proclaimed change deviant.   She is obsessed with change and carries that into every facet of her life.  From small things like changing her favorite brand of water (it's Essentia right now, but that will change soon) to larger goals like becoming an entrepreneur-she believes her constant evolution makes her a better human.

Liesl spent the majority of her career in Human Resources at one of the top Global Healthcare IT companies in the world.  At the intersection of health care and IT, change was the only constant.   At the height of her career, Liesl managed executive development and had the opportunity to learn from some of the brightest and most gifted leaders. While all had varying personalities they shared one motto : irrelevant companies failed because of their refusal to change.   This change or die spirit may have started at the top, but it was culturally embedded in the 20,000 + associate population making it one of the most visionary companies in the world.  It was at the here Liesl got to express her change or die spirit most, but was surprised to learn change was truly a learned behavior all could embrace.

In 2016, Liesl got the entrepreneurial itch and left Cerner to pursue opening the Historic Browning Inn.  Like many young entrepreneurs, Liesl found herself completely overwhelmed by her new responsibilities and woefully unprepared to tackle everything thrown at her.  Liesl trekked through the discomfort by embracing change, surrounding herself with people who are smarter than her, and leaning on her family who relentlessly collaborates to make her crazy ideas happen.

Liesl is an active part of the philanthropic and entrepreneurial community in Lee’s Summit Missouri where she serves on a number of boards and committees.  She runs on coffee, "to do" lists, and the belief that she has something to learn from every person she meets.

Update #10 - Dear Reader: What matters most to you? May 16, 2019

It hardly feels like a month since I've wrapped up my Publishizer campaign and yet it feels like years.  I consistently feel like the days are long, but the months are short.  I think it's because each day I have the opportunity to learn and accomplish so much.

If I had to summarize the theme of this past month it would this quote:

"Dear Reader: What matters most to you?"

Last week, I was fortunate to talk with a publisher who reminded me of this central question.  They have an exercise their authors walk through called "Dear Reader" where authors write to their readers and summarize why their book matters.

In my past and current life designing training and development, this simple design thinking principle rules the world for me.  Start with empathy.  Understand what your users want.  If you don't, you could be designing meaningless content.

After my call with that publisher, I wondered how I missed this simple yet profound tool I use all the time.  I assure you I forgot it.  So, in an effort to resolve this critical miss-I started crafting reader personas (in the design thinking world, personas simply describe a consumer).

I started asking people in my target market what change topics matter most to them.  I'm continuously inspired by what I hear:

-What are the disadvantages of change?

-How do I let go of the old to make room for the new?

-How do I build a support system while I'm transitioning?

-How do I transform desire into action?

I'd love to hear from you on the change topics that matter most to you.  Shoot me an e-mail at changedeviants@gmail.com

Grateful for all the change inspiration you've provided me,

Liesl
