About the author

I've spent the last decade plus, providing highlights and in-depth features for TV news as a sports anchor in Salt Lake City, UT. But the time has come to transition to the written page. I'm attracted to stories where the ordinary and fantastic clash—more than ready to scratch an itch that has been trapped inside his own head for far too long. When I'm not writing, my world revolves around my wife, Stephanie and our three girls, discovering the Earth’s endless beauty, working out, as well as anything Eighties.

"Inheriting the Sleigh" is the first of a three-part book series. The purpose behind me writing the story was to fill a void. I wanted to be the first to seamlessly create a story that blended the spiritual and magical sides of Christmas into one grand holiday tale that would survive the test of time.

Synopsis

14-year-old Nick Crest lives a charmed life, or so it appears. Coming from a family of means, he’s already a respected concert pianist and expects to share yet another normal Christmas. But on December 24th, realizes that normal is not to be this year.
After learning of problems at home, an international crisis ensues. Santa Claus is found dead with the sleigh having crashed in a frigid wilderness. Those directing traffic back at the Pole scramble to locate Kris Kringle. The Claus’ Chief of Staff, Isaac Newell relays the heart-wrenching news, but after speaking with the Matriarch, realizes what must be done. Defying a direct order from the Pole’s ruling class, Isaac takes off for America to reveal his true identity. He convinces Nick that only he can save Christmas.
Meanwhile, Nick’s adopted father, Arthur Crest is spiraling out of control. Isaac struggles to gain Nick’s trust, though Nick is eventually convinced to leave everything he’s ever known to join Isaac in a place only previously left up to the imagination.
After a grueling trip via ship, train and advanced vehicle system leading into the hidden North Pole, Nick learns many things; such as the elves’ biblical lineage and who his father really was. Who is enemies are, and what it’ll take to become Santa Claus over a year’s time.
Nick gets acquainted with his friends. Six elves with very different skillsets and personalities help him brace for the difficult transition. He also can’t help but get acquainted with the Elites and their leader, Mauv Lyman. They run the Pole’s Congressional House, and want to finally do away with what they consider to be the silly traditions of the past.
Nick meets Smudge Terpley, a quirky professor that trains him to be the next Claus—and all the many nuances that go along with it. Meanwhile, the boy must stay alive as there are secret forces trying to take him our. Lyman is murdered by a more sinister enemy, driving Nick into hiding. As he escapes, the boy learns the spiritual roots pertaining to his real father, who often shows himself to Nick in mysterious ways.
The Black Capes ambush the elves on Christmas Eve as they attempt to unveil a new Santa to the world. Some must die in the process of getting the sleigh off the ground, but more importantly, delivering hope again to the outside world.
Nick makes his first stop on the island atolls of the Marshall Islands where he quickly settles into his new role. He also visits his adopted mother, a friend, and even an incarcerated Arthur Crest.
But all the while, there has been somebody trying desperately to track him down. His former girlfriend, Marie Bayliff is risking her life through extreme temperatures to join Nick as a rescue team sets out to save her before she falls victim to the elements.

Sales arguments

  • Finally... a story that bridges both the fantasy and spiritual elements of Christmas
  • Has a fantastic cover already in place that will sell the rich story that goes along with it
  • Tells the story of an apostle that historians can't agree on a cause of death

Similar titles

  • Nicholas, Michael J. Scott, Oct 27th. Its similar in drawing upon the legends of the man that became Santa Claus. Inheriting the Sleigh differs with its focus being on Santa Claus' posterity. The main character learns about his father as the reader does.
  • The Immortal Nicholas, Glenn Beck, Simon and Schuster, 2015. Beck's book is rich in with the spiritual side of Christmas, but lacks the fun, whimsical side as well. My story blends the two into one tale.
  • Nicholas-the Legend Begins, Joe Dodridge, 2020. Delves into the mysteries behind the man, but it doesn't primarily take place in the present day like Inheriting the Sleigh

Audience

This is book is written in a young adult style and for anybody endeared by Christmas traditions

Advance praise

I saw this book somewhere online, don't remember where, but went immediately and put it on my wish list. My husband saw my list and I found the book under the tree on Christmas morning. Morgan Vance did a terrific job in weaving the tale of Santa Claus in a new way, and because of that, I never lost interest. Each character fascinated me and I loved getting to know them better. I loved the way he built suspense and the intriguing ways he wove the magic of Christmas and the North Pole into the background. Now all I need is a sequel!

Great read! A very fresh and compelling take on a topic and traditions you've thought a lot about - but never like this. Vance skillfully balances the tension between what you already think you know, and captivating the imagination with what you want to turn the page and learn more about. With enough exposure, this could easily become a holiday classic - and definitely an addition to my personal "recommended" list.

Our family has really enjoyed this hidden gem of a book and I hope a lot more people will get to discover it! If you're a fan of classic Christmas tales but you want something with a modern-day twist then you're sure to LOVE this book! Highly recommended!

Dear Author,

You worked hard to write your manuscript; finally, it's ready to release. You know that expert assistance is needed, but perhaps you didn’t know that it’s no longer necessary to work with a publisher—especially publishers who charge fees to produce your book upfront and deduct more costs on the back end whenever a book is sold.

1106 Design is an author services company. We provide all the editorial and design services you’d expect from a publisher to turn your manuscript into a market-ready book—editing, cover design, interior layout, proofreading, eBook formatting, and more—at the traditional publisher level. Unlike a publisher, we’ll help you obtain print-on-demand printing and worldwide distribution in your name so that you earn, in most cases, several dollars more for every book sold instead of a measly “royalty.”

We’ll customize a package of services to suit your exact needs at affordable prices ranging from $4,000 to $10,000, depending on your manuscript's word count and complexity. And we’ll manage all the intricacies of book production, so you don’t have to. After this one-time investment, every penny of net revenue from book sales goes directly to you, never to us.

If this sounds like a better way to publish your book, I invite you to browse our services, design samples, no-surprises pricing, outstanding customer reviews, and educational articles at https://1106design.com.

1106 Design has been in business since 2001 and is rated A+ by the Better Business Bureau. We are a “Highly Recommended Expert” at IngramSpark.com and rated "Excellent" at Alli, The Alliance for Independent Authors, at SelfPublishingAdvice.org.
