Birth of Inspiration and Un-fulfillment.
I initially was very happy to have a professional position after college, a real job that required a bachelor’s degree. I’d really struggled through college and having a steady paycheck felt good. But I wasn’t committed to excellence. I wasn’t disciplined in any area. I did the bare minimum, I didn’t put forth the effort to learn the principles, I was late all the time, called in sick, blamed my boss for my shortcomings, spent money foolishly etc. I was very unhappy.
I was convinced that having a husband would make my life better. So I planned a huge wedding, pulled off the happiest day of my life, entered marriage, changed my last name, and still was un-fulfilled. I then thought a baby would make it all better. So I got off birth control and tried for four months to get pregnant. I later found out I was pregnant with a baby girl. As she grew inside of me, I realized I would be responsible for her childhood happiness. I decided I didn’t want her to see a beat down miserable door mat of a mother. So when she was born and I found out about additional infidelities, I packed her up and moved to another city. I begin the single life. I enrolled in graduate school and fought to work full time, take care of her and make good grades. What a difficult time, but I was determined to put myself into a position to show her greatness. I still was very mediocre professionally, barely getting by, very unhappy. I constantly told myself, “If only I made more money and had a higher level position and had a husband that made more money, I would be ok”.
Marlon and I were never truly separated. We still spent time together, we talked about divorce from time to time, but neither of us wanted to call it quits and leave our daughter hanging. So after a year and a half, I quit my job and moved back home. I graduated with my master’s degree during that time period and I constantly applied for jobs on Marlon’s behalf, because I thought an increase in his income would be the end to my problems. He got a job opportunity in Minnesota with a fortune 500 company. I pressured/threatened him into taking it and off we went. At the time, he’d completed his MBA and was working with a good friend to build a medical transportation business. Working as a firefighter provided business owners a great opportunity because of the limited days worked per month. I didn’t realize at the time how damaging it was for him to walk away from his plans, but I’d find out what kind of issues my meddling caused later in life.
