Synopsis

Here is another fun fact. More than 97% of Writers that finish their manuscript set their eyes on Traditional Publishing routes only. So, when 95% of them are rejected, the only other option is Self-Publishing. Well, welcome to the Jungle Rookie, because if you played in the Freelance Writers markets and thought that was cut-throat, you are now laying where the pros play. Let’s lay out the choices for you. Hybrid Publishers, Vanity Presses, or do it yourself. Yes, that seems like a no-brainer, but when you walk in unprepared, you may have your wallet stolen by the scammers. Yes, we point them out as clearly as possible, along with ample proof. We also provide costs of all the significant names that you will hear often, and who would be a better choice. Now let’s settle back into reality as you ask yourself, what took us so long? Literarily Lost is not a short, touch-base, how-to D.I.Y guide. It is the one book that you can refer to when you have a question and can’t find the straight answer. If there is a book in existence that can help pave your pathway to writing success, Literarily Lost is it.

Audience

Literarily Lost is a must-read for aspiring writers and seasoned authors alike. According to statistics, there were 44,690 writers in the United States alone in 2016, and that statistic is only a record of writers who show writing as their profession on their taxes. Consider the thousands of aspiring writers that emerge every year, and the writers who hold a full-time job in another industry with writing being their secondary job, our target audience is vast. 304,912 books were published in 2013 in the United States alone, and Literarily Lost would be beneficial to each one of those publishing authors. If ever a single book could lead you to success in the writing field, Literarily Lost is the one. Every career writer and even the hobbyist, to remain relevant, must stay up-to-date with the trends in this ever-changing market. This book serves as a complete guide, walking the reader through each necessary step to success in their career. Every aspiring author dreams of having the ability to pick the brain of a successful, multi-published author. With the words of wisdom pages in this book, contributed by those very successful and multi-published authors, readers will be lining up to read this book and benefit from the advice given by those seasoned authors who have paved the way to literary greatness. Members of the writing community all have in common, the understanding of the importance of a social media presence. This in itself makes targeting our audience and advertising our book much simpler to place within a complex Strategy Web. As members of many of the same social media platforms and being members of many of the same vital organizations and programs, we already have a secure connection to our target audience.

Promotion

In today’s market, a web-based advertising campaign is vital to gain reputable traction that will impact Book sales. 90% of mobile users have at least one subscription to promotional and advertising apps and sites. Even more to our advantage, our target audience in particular. Though there are plenty of Series-based Print in circulation such as Writers Digest, Writer Magazine, Duo Trop, and the list is quite lengthy. We have developed a unique style of Keywording that allows us to use a saturated Market to our advantage. Not only will we have the same access to those very readers that have subscribed, liked, or shared any of these established Publications, but our Book will appear next to it for a quarter of the cost. Keyword and Meta-Tagging are the keys to get eyes-on-Cover and the Cover-in-mind. That is also not including the Inclusive memberships in which we personally belong, or the 80+ Book Promotional Partner Websites, 30 Podcasts, and a dozen or more active interview channels. As we all know the Writing Community, though cut-throat and competitive by nature, is a very tight-knit grouping. Sounds intimidating, unless you’ve spent 365 days researching them. They are the only Market Trend that Never fluctuates or changes Genres. It’s easy to hit the stationary target. Literarily Lost, not only, is an entertaining creation, but it serves a great educational value as well. With this in mind we have made motions toward the Library and Education communities as potential clients.

We have already promoted this publication on the Keith Andrew Network and have scheduled appearances for 'Ask Win with host Win Kelly Charles' and the popular 'Susan Brender Show'

Competition

It is impossible to declare the schoolyard rule of “finders-keepers” when it comes to finding “the key” to success in Literature by declaring “never been done before.” Chances are that in some form it has already been implemented, or at very least attempted, in the strategy of a few Writers. Chances are is has found some success and it also has some failure. As anyone in our world knows that it shifts too often to have one particular formula. So my team and I hit the pavement, turned on our Kindles, lifted the covers, and dug right in. The Titles that we have chosen to study were based on their likeness and success in the eBook sales market. The following are the creations read supported by our findings and how we see the perfect spot for Literarily Lost.

On Writing- Stephen King 2014

The Elements of Style-  William Strunk Jr 1999

On Writing Well- William Zinsser 2006

Creative Writing Career (v1)- Justin Sloan 2014

(Some of v2)

The Social Media Writer’s Guide- Simon Rose 2015

How to make a Living with your Writing- Joanna Penn 2015

Writing Tools- Roy Peter Clark 2008

Though all of the above titles contained excellent content and we actually learned some great ways to improve our writing, the Titles seemed to be misleading at times for some of these. Creative Writing Career and How to make a Living with your Writing were believed going to have the most similarities. Author Joanna Penn seemed like she had plenty of category and content covered, but once you dig inside it left much to be desired. She did touch base, kind-of, on everything from developing the psychological strength to pursuit a Life in Literature. After that, it seemed to trail off into quick Common Sense notations, Author Citing, and a whole bunch of other Books she has written along with every question receiving the same answer “[blank] is a great organization, and they can help with that.” No distinctive detail provided when every answer is the same.

The Writers of today do not need a direct step-by-step opinionated guide that worked for a handful of people a few years ago. This career choice is evolving every day as we push further into the Technology-based era. So book signing events, which are very often mentioned, may not be the best advice for an unknown Writer. What Literarily Lost provides is direct and current options available to the Writer. Each section has a bountiful list of different references that give more than just one way to succeed. This is the success dictionary because every avenue offered are the ones that have the most impact on Marketing, Sales, Freelance understanding, Resume building, Promotion, Manuscript Drafting, Contract negotiating, Agent queries, and even how to dig into the history of Publishers.

Dear Author,

You worked hard to write your manuscript; finally, it's ready to release. You know that expert assistance is needed, but perhaps you didn’t know that it’s no longer necessary to work with a publisher—especially publishers who charge fees to produce your book upfront and deduct more costs on the back end whenever a book is sold.

1106 Design is an author services company. We provide all the editorial and design services you’d expect from a publisher to turn your manuscript into a market-ready book—editing, cover design, interior layout, proofreading, eBook formatting, and more—at the traditional publisher level. Unlike a publisher, we’ll help you obtain print-on-demand printing and worldwide distribution in your name so that you earn, in most cases, several dollars more for every book sold instead of a measly “royalty.”

We’ll customize a package of services to suit your exact needs at affordable prices ranging from $4,000 to $10,000, depending on your manuscript's word count and complexity. And we’ll manage all the intricacies of book production, so you don’t have to. After this one-time investment, every penny of net revenue from book sales goes directly to you, never to us.

If this sounds like a better way to publish your book, I invite you to browse our services, design samples, no-surprises pricing, outstanding customer reviews, and educational articles at https://1106design.com.

1106 Design has been in business since 2001 and is rated A+ by the Better Business Bureau. We are a “Highly Recommended Expert” at IngramSpark.com and rated "Excellent" at Alli, The Alliance for Independent Authors, at SelfPublishingAdvice.org.

How can we serve you today?

Gladiator Publishing Company logo Gladiator Publishing Company

Gladiator Publishing Co. has held a reputation in the Literary Industry for nearly 100 Years as a Writer-Loyal company. Nearly 100-years later, Gladiator Publishing Company still maintains that strong characteristic. We place our Authors publications first and foremost. You may hear many other "Publishing entities" state that they are "the first" to do this or the "originator/pioneer" of that. If everyone is using the same marketing, promotional, and advertising pipelines what makes them so original?

As the proud recipients of six-awards in 2018 for our innovative marketing techniques, media outreach, extremely low budget compared to the Global Industry Standard (72-83% cheaper), and an Author-inclusive style, it is no wonder we are the #1 Requested Publishing Service on the East Coast. We are staffed with industry-specific professionals that are dedicated to market and brand development.

Full Editing Services (substantive, copy, formatting, proofreading, story flow, line) are INCLUDED in the price. No hidden fees, no extra cost for something that Publishing Services should be more than happy to provide to benefit the manuscripts success. The industry has turned toward greed and away from literature. It's sick and inappropriate, it's ok to agree, they know it too.

Chapter One

Let’s Get it Write

1:1- Learn

I have had plenty of interviews throughout my career, and all of which seem to ask the same general questions. Why do you write? What is your book about? What is your next book about? Are there any plans for the future? After a while, every question becomes less personal, and each answer seems generic. Do you ever wonder why the Miss America pageant always has that one gorgeous woman say “I wish for World Peace?” If you were to ask you why she chose that response to the Judges questions instead of something truthful, she would probably seem as confused about what the truth actually is. That is how most Authors feel after an extensive Media tour. So imagine my surprise when the most puzzling question that I have ever faced came from my own kids.

It was a Saturday when my Team and I  celebrated the release of my new book ‘The Trail of Trials.’ My daughters were sitting on the couch and watching one of their favorite movies that they can not seem to turn off. How many times can any human being watch ‘Lilo and Stitch’ before relocating to an Amish society may be the only intelligent option to maintain what-little-sense of dignity or pride that was not given to my ex-wife in the Divorce? As they enjoyed their shows, I delivered them each a piece of the celebratory cake purchased at a supermarket that was apparently not known for baking cake.

My six-year-old, Sophia, looked up at me and asked why there were so many guests at the house that night. Doing what a father does best when he is the parent of a little girl and sat next to both Sophia and Nova, my mouthy two-year-old. I explained to my daughters that daddy was celebrating something he made and everyone was happy for him. Now, the rapid-fire session of questions usually would commence, but my daughters seemed confused already. I tried to quietly step away before Sophia could begin her famous quick-fire ‘Q and A’ session that has been compared to the intensity of Duel-Mounted Miniguns.

After separating from the couch and traveling, a record-shattering, three feet, she responded. “Why?” She asked, surely with another question already stirring about.

“Because they are happy for Daddy.” Damn Albert, not vague enough, I thought to myself. She was already loaded with another question, I returned to my seat beside my daughters knowing that this will take a while. The things parents are willing to do for their children are astonishing, at times they even seem superhuman.

Sophia hesitated, this brief moment means she was in deep thought. Both of my daughters have an inquisitive nature about them, nice to see that they received some of my character traits. Glancing at the television, then back toward me, she continued “why do you make books.”

I smiled and responded, “because Daddy likes to write.”

“You never write!” She exclaimed darting a funny look in my direction and followed with “if you don’t write you can’t make books. Are you going to write forever?”

As pure and innocent of a question that was, or should I say could have been if any of that was how it actually happened. To be fair, Sophia did say that to me one day when she came down into my home office and wanted another can of soda, her request was denied. She developed an attitude and said I write too much and I am going to write forever. Not as majestic of a story, so I reimagined it hold the reader's attention. That is the beauty of writing.

There has never been a path to success that can be mapped out in a step-by-step format that will guarantee success for everyone who follows it. The world of Literature is no different, especially for the Writer. Our society is congested with enough “experts” that like to throw around “facts” and “statistics” that it seems as though the rookies trying to make a name for themselves walk in with very little truth as to how it really is. So, there can only be one solution to remedy that particular problem. After careful deliberation, research, schedule shifting, though, and sincerity, my Editor in Chief finally mapped out enough of a solution that can be held together in a Perfect Bound, or Hard Copy, creation. She spent many months and long nights working alongside myself and a fully staffed, and costly, research team to interview, document, and cipher every little bit of information that can be useful to today's newcomer.

The Writers reality is a perplexing string of stressful events, so you must ask yourself a predictable question. Are you sure you want to be a Writer? I can tell that you are jumping up-and-down overwhelmed with excitement to begin your new venture and become the entrepreneurial craftsman that you knew you always could become. I am not accusing anyone at all of lacking the talent or capability to write but is the Writers life something that is needed or is the idea of being an Artist the main draw to the industry?

Before you decide to place your work out there on the Web and Publish your bestselling Novel, let’s touch on some key points.

DO NOT QUIT YOUR DAY JOB!

A big part of the transition, some can argue to be the most difficult, is to define yourself as a Writer. What I mean by this, is not explain why you want to be a writer, or provide your own “Miss Universe” response. This is a fundamental question that, in my opinion, is not given enough attention. Think of it this way, if you could make all of your creations reach the eyes of just one person, why them and what do you want their reason for reading your work and how should they feel afterward? This person cannot be based primarily on someone you know, writing for the enjoyment of a single person means your work will only be appreciated by, you guessed it, a single person.

It is harder to understand the primary reasons since we, as a society, are wired to act based on a feeling or instinct. When you are hungry, you eat or drink when you are in need of water. Whatever the scenario may be, those two traits can primarily copilot your basic sense of survival. However, there is one trait that we all have that we all have and can mistake as either one of the primary drives needed to succeed. If writing out of habit is what drives you to become a career Writer than there is a high probability that you will struggle to find success in most writing fields, become frustrated with the stresses that come naturally with a Wordsmith-for-hire, or struggling emotionally as your conscious becomes crossed between work-ethic and unhappy.

From a thirst-person-perspective, it can be quite simple to spot those who write out of habit and those who write out of instinct. Habitual Writers may produce some extraordinarily fine-detailed research content, their creative writing creations can seem forced to the reader. Some are plagued by the “structure monster” as they form their material and stress over the proper build of a paragraph rather than the flow of the story or character development. Granted, it is beneficial to have an appropriate education in Literary construction, it is not, however, a requirement. There have been many great writers to emerge in the market with an impacting creation and have not attended College or even dropped out.

If you have a friend, even a Facebook-friend, that has stated only “real writers” graduate from some form of Literature-based University. Well, I would question them about the integrity of their statistics. My primary reason for stating this is to not deter you from attending a University or even taking a handful of Workshops to improve your writing ability. My own Editor would agree that I am in dire need of an English class or two. My argument is just for the sake of being unbias in an extremely bias field. So to strengthen your conversation here are a few names of famous Authors who did not attend or dropped out of College.

·         Truman Capote

·         Agatha Christie

·         Herman Melville

·         Doris Lessing

·         Stieg Larsson

Let us not forget the most memorable writer of them all to not receive a Literary Degree from an accredited University, and possibly my favorite Writer of all time, me. That’s right, I did not attend College until I was already establishing myself as a Writer, and I did not participate in any writing-based classes. All of what I have learned has been either on-the-job-training or from trusted friends. It was a very long and very challenging road, but it was worth every minute. I was very fortunate to learn from a tremendously talented Canadian Author named Vanessa M. Thibeault. She was the one who was behind All of Me, All of You. Her assistance really helped me settle back into the groove of Writing instead of branching into other fields.

Right now the markets are entirely saturated with other aspiring writers just like you, and they are all in ‘Hustle-Mode’ with their ears to the ground. This may seem altogether unfair to some, but the majority of Writers that receive top-dollar Freelance gigs and, at times, receive a higher advance from Traditional Publishers. You have to think of it as if you are the Client. If you are the head of a company and in need of some stellar content to draw your audience and thicken your revenue stream, who would you go for? As the owner of a Company, I would like to chime in with my two-cents and say that going for the sure thing can be cheaper than the wildcard in the long run. Now, granted I have chosen the Collegiate superstar, that cost me an arm-and-a-leg, and was ripped off in the end with less than satisfactory overall performance. This is a two-way-street and depends solely on the Writers capability to complete the task in the allotted time. Not many Clients are willing to take that chance.
