Synopsis

Have you fully considered the number of men and women who have an abusive relationship with food? In the US alone, it has been estimated that more than 30 million adults will suffer from an eating disorder in their lifetime. Now consider all those who have negative behaviours and thoughts associated with eating, but who don’t have what would be defined as a full-blown eating disorder. Have you ever looked in the mirror and picked your body apart, or told yourself that you need to do a juice cleanse to lose weight? Have you ever felt guilty after eating or saved calories so you can binge on a ‘cheat meal’ later in the day?

In my professional role as a registered nutritionist, I know that most of us have disordered behaviours and thoughts around food, weight and shape. As a recovered anorexic, I know how it feels to experience these. I was a chronic self-abuser; I spent a decade fighting myself and my body. The result? I developed osteoporosis by the age of 22 and may never have children, yet I also learnt a lot and found my passion for helping others take care of themselves. In this challenging but conversational book, I get real on my experiences and give specific practical strategies for how we as women can show ourselves more kindness in our approach to nutrition and health.

In the process, I give you the courage to make positive changes to become the joyous, strong, badass woman you were meant to be, whilst achieving your nutrition goals. You really can have the life you have always wanted. give yourself grace without giving up.

Lizzy Cole is a registered nutritionist and personal trainer from England, who has a deep passion for self love and using her experiences to help others.   • The Gifts of Imperfection: Let Go of Who You Think You're Supposed to Be and Embrace Who You Are, Brene Brown, 2010- she describes key learnings along her journey towards self acceptance and encourages readers to take these as guiding pillars in their own journeys. My book will be similar; using key concepts to guide them in being kinder to themselves. However, like Rachel, she doesn't focus specifically on nutrition or disordered eating, except giving a few examples.
  • 8 Keys to Recovery from an Eating Disorder: Effective Strategies from Therapeutic Practice and Personal Experience, Carolyn Costin and Gwen Schubert Grabb, 2011- these two therapists share their unique stories of suffering from and eventually overcoming their own severe eating disorders. This is very similar to my book. However, my book is going to be more conversational than this book, which walks readers though the mechanics of the recovery process.

Audience

The book is for women and teenage girls who physically and emotionally abuse themselves through what they do to their bodies and stories they tell their brains. It's for those who deserve to love themselves more and who, like myself, have struggled with this problem for many years and who need hope that it is possible to heal.
