Sarah MacLaughlin is a licensed social worker, parent educator, and author of the award-winning, bestselling book, What Not to Say: Tools for Talking with Young Children (Bay Island Books, 2010). She wrote the Parenting Toolbox column at Parent & Family for 8 years and has been featured on HuffPost and many online outlets.

Sarah is obsessed with brain science and child development, and is passionate about advocating for kids and the adults who care for them. When moms and dads are supported and understand themselves and their children, everyone has more fun.

Becoming a parent is a seismic shift. For most, that sparkling newborn rocks your world with their smooth skin and fuzzy head you just can’t stop sniffing. This book stems from Casey's experience as a mom, parent coach, podcaster, and Positive Discipline trainer. She focuses on helping parents understand and tame their emotional reactivity with self-awareness and self-regulation. Raising Humans With Heart will include a chapter on parents' emotional reactivity, but isn't about a Positive Discipline approach. It will provide a broad context around two-generations and what we bring to parenting form the get-go. It's based on brain development and Dr. Laura's extensive clinical experience with parents. It states that with a strong emotional connection with children, you don’t need to threaten, nag, plead, bribe, or punish. Sarah’s book covers some of the same ground as far as raising emotionally intelligent humans and seeing a parent’s connection with their children as their greatest asset. Sarah’s book is not clinical and includes some vignettes from her coaching work.
