It elevates the power of lasting change by helping you unlock your personal change limiters such as your attitude, core beliefs, and personality characteristics.

Change deviants are rare, but we’ve all met them. They appear to jump into life changes effortlessly; tackling their fear of change at an alarmingly fast rate.  In the workplace, they’re energized by new projects, team changes and even total re-organization. They are often visionaries who articulate crazy ideas and nourish them till they become reality.  They are constantly looking for new ways of doing things and reinventing the status quo. In their personal lives, they’re relentlessly editing themselves whether through self-development or maybe by pushing you to change (annoyingly so).  At times, keeping up with their evolving beliefs, preferences and projects is exhausting. Change deviants rarely play it safe. Instead, they are grounded in the fundamental belief that change is necessary for growth.

Whether you ascribe to their endless supply of change energy or duck down in your cubicle to avoid a run in, we all know change has numerous personal benefits such as helping you grow, teaching you resiliency, getting you outside your comfort zone and even living a more authentic life.  While you might not want to copy everything change deviants do, their behaviors serve as a guide to tackling change head on.

The book will dive deep with some of the most inspiring change influencers, highlight their meaningful stories and decode the behaviors most important for change success. After exploring the makeup of these influencers, Change Deviants factors in a critical component to change success: your change DNA.  Change is personal and while it’s important to learn from change deviants, the application of these concepts is deeply personal.  While change is a process most can all relate to, cookie cutter solutions lack one critical thing-you.

Your attitudes, beliefs, skill level are factors that are foundational to how you and only you approach change. Change Deviants guides you through identifying your individual change limiters and personalizes behaviors that are specific to you.  From the operational “I play it safe” thinker to the visionary idea generator-Change Deviants is your customized guide to finally pursuing each life change with behaviors that matter most for success.

Part I:

Equipped for Change:  Stop skiing in your swimsuit

Playing it safe becomes muscle memory.  It’s a series of small choices you’ve made that probably went unnoticed. Eventually the weight of those unfulfilled changes becomes compounded and heavy.  You’ve created a solid plan in the past- so why haven’t you been successful? Having a plan doesn’t guarantee you’re equipped to execute it. When playing it safe becomes muscle memory, you unconsciously make decisions insulating you from risk.  While your conscious mind is set to tackle the plan, your attitudes, beliefs and experiences are the GPS giving you directions. Your conscious mind was clear by typing in your maps app, “let’s head for the Rocky Mountains and go skiing,” However, your unconscious mind had a different idea, “let’s go lay on the beach in Pensacola.”  Now you’re stuck wearing a swimming suit and flip flops right before you hit the slopes and wondering why everybody around you is in ski pants and has a lift ticket. You’ve gotten this far with a solid plan, so you hop on the ski lift and hope for the best. The result is always the same:epic failure. Funny enough, you believe the failure to execute the plan is your fault when in actuality you just weren’t equipped for success.  Part I explores your unconscious mind  asking hard questions like, “what attitudes, beliefs, and experiences mold the way I approach change?” or “why do I even want to change?”

It will explore:

Here's to the Misfits: Change Deviants 

Get  personal insight into the world of change deviants through candid stories, interviews and discussions.  Part II will dive deep into the behaviors that matter most for successful change then synthesize it into core skills & knowledge you can apply to your world.  We’ll ask our  change influencers important questions such as:

  • What attitudes, skills, and behaviors are most important for activating change in your life?

  • What daily habits, practices or routines support your change mindset?

  • How do you create a culture of change in your life?

Unique to you: Developing a plan you can stick to

Your path to experience lasting change must be as unique as you.  Chances are the core skills and behaviors our change deviants shared might have terrified you.  Maybe they’re completely against any behavior you feel comfortable with. While change deviants have a propensity for change, their ability to jump in head first didn’t start with big ticket items like reinventing the healthcare industry.  Similar to how you’ve protected yourself from change-they’ve done the same for playing it safe. Part III helps you understand your own risk tolerance and aligns customized behaviors to help you flex your change muscles. Don’t worry, if change terrifies you, we’ll help you adapt in small bites.   

In Part III we will:

  • Assess your skill in relationship to the change behaviors

  • Develop an action plan with customized behaviors to help you achieve your change goals.

Audience

According to industry research, the self-development market is worth over 9 billion a year.    However, the future of this market is currently in transition. Traditionally baby boomers have been the primary consumers of self-help, but will become a shrinking market as millennials transition to take their place.

Pew research validates the majority of Millennials feel they are a distinctive generation.  Forbes reported in January 2018, 94% of Millennials are addicted to self-improvement and would be willing to spend $300 a month on it.  They also spend twice as much on self-care regimens than their Baby Boomer counterparts. The same article also reports Millennials find themselves getting addicted to self-help without putting it into practice.

Millennials consumed the self-help market is a huge way in 2018.  Rachel Hollis became more of phenomenon than anyone could predict with her New York Times Best Seller, “Girl Wash Your Face”.  Unlike self-help mantras of old steeped in processes and data-driven research, Rachel encourages women they only need one thing to be happy and fulfilled-their inner power. Hollis isn’t the only trailblazer in this market.  Gary Bishop’s 2016 New York Times Best Seller Un-Fu*k Yourself followed a similar theme: you are a miracle of being and you’re the only one stopping yourself.  Let’s not forget Shauna Niequist’s Present Over Perfect or Jen Sincero’s, “You are a Badass” all focused-on transformation through your own inner power.

Millennials have spoken and their self-help market is taking a hard turn in the other direction in stark contrast to their Baby Boomer parents.  The Millennial self-help mantra requires an authentic voice, the power to accomplish meaningful change through self-inflection, and a few inspiring role-models to get them there.  Millennials also recognize they are over-consuming self-help and are seeking to embrace action.

Our book market is the next generation of self-help consumers: Millennial men & women (ages 23-38).  Our readers are in pursuit of becoming the best version of themselves. They already consume self-help through podcasts, books, and following inspirational social media accounts. However, they are tired of endlessly pursuing their self-help journey just for the warm-feelings it brings them.  They believe consuming has been useful but are ready to act. Publishizer Launch Approach

Liesl has a robust strategy for promoting her book during the Publishizer campaign running from 3/15/19-4/15/19.  Her personal goal is to sell 34 pre-order every day. She plans to reach that goal by:

  •  Crowd-funding Social: Liesl will host a crowd-funding social at the Historic Browning Inn.  This event will include appetizers, drinks, promotional material and a room dedicated to pre-orders (laptops/iPad).  She will invite her strong base of supporters and give them the opportunity to pre-order her book as a VIP in her life.

  • For Better or For Worse Podcast Appearance: Liesl will appear on the “For Better or For Worse” podcast hosted by local entrepreneur Sarah Bronson.  Sarah owns All My Heart Bridal which has recently gained national attention for serving “women with curves”.  She has over 2,170 Instagram followers and 1,580 Facebook followers.  On the podcast she will discuss her unique approach to guestology at the Historic Browning and promote her book with women about to embark on a major life change (getting married).

  • Social Media Campaign: Liesl will continue to leverage her digital influence by providing daily posts related to her Publishizer Campaign.  This will include utilizing the Historic Browning, business and individual pages.  She will commit to doing a Facebook live video every week to provide updates.

  • Video Campaign: Liesl will have a short campaign video that will share about Change Deviants coupled with a compelling why to support pre-orders.  This will be pushed out through social media, her website and other change influencers.

In Change or Die, Alan argues when given the chance to change-we rarely do.  From patients who are suffering from heart disease who have been given the opportunity to change many times to repeat offenders in the criminal justice system-change is not easy.  In his book, Alan provides a simple repeatable process to approach change more effectively-relate, repeat and reframe.  Using breakthrough research from well-respected leaders in medicine, science and business, Alan shares how anyone can approach change in an attainable way. 

Change Deviants will explore some of the personal change topics discussed in Change or Die, but will expand beyond a uniform model to help readers navigate change.  It will dig a layer deeper by truly being a self-development book to support readers in reaching their customized change goals.

Who Moved my Cheese is a well-known classic that explores the challenges of change.  It identifies the primary pitfalls of change: it’s outside our control, you cannot determine when it will hit, and our responses are often the same whether it happens to us or we choose it.  Who Moved my Cheese assumes there is one primary factor that dictates change success; our attitude.  It explores a simple way to tackle normal change emotions like fear and anxiety in order to have a more positive view of change.  

Change Deviants will discuss how your attitude more broadly impacts change, but it will focus predominately on changes that are inside your control.  Who Moved my Cheese provides support for individuals focusing on changes outside their control while Change Deviants will focus only on changes within a person’s control.

ADKAR is a model that supports individuals in managing through both personal and professional changes.  ADKAR is a change model that is backed by years of data proving it to be a holistic model to navigate change effectively.  ADKAR (Awareness, Desire, Knowledge, Ability to demonstrate core skills & behaviors and reinforcement to make the change stick.  It is a well-known model used by organizations and individuals.

Change Deviants will explore some of the components addressed in ADKAR but will focus more on change at the personal level.  ADKAR is an extremely popular model in the corporate world but is not a widely accepted model as it relates to personal change.  Change Deviants will not assume a one-size fits all change models works for everyone. It will support a customized self-development plan for readers.
