Working her way up the corporate ladder with no degree, in 2008 she became a certified Process Improvement Advisor, earning her six-sigma black belt and eventually graduating from the University of Canterbury with an MBA in Applied Management in 2011,
a long way from humble beginnings of a 19-year-old mother.
Charisse is a wife, mom, daughter, big sister who loves to role model

Synopsis

Yes! Catfished! I always thought when I finally made it to the top of that ladder, I’d have the big fancy career, with a big fancy office with the New York skyline view. I’d be well respected, giving everyone orders (I mean being a “Leader”), have an executive assistant holding all my calls just to chat with my BFF for an hour. The top was supposed to be like a tall dark and handsome man waiting with a rose for me!

Well it sure in hell wasn’t that! Try sharing a small office with three college interns, and one of your employees who is in constant trouble, and having to babysit all of them for almost 12 hours a day. Commuting through LA traffic for an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening (which is very good for LA traffic by the way). My nice office view was of the parking lot that constantly had construction going on. The best thing about my career at that point after 20 years was that I had a job and Starbucks was on my campus. I literally had a nervous breakdown! Tears, snot and all!

I got Corporate Catfished!

The Career! The Job! The Company! The People! The culture! Was not what it was all cracked up to be! I wanted my red rose! I was over worked under paid, although I was making six figures, and most of all under appreciated. When you're climbing the corporate ladder you tend to encounter and take a whole lot of crap, but that's expected. In my mind once you get to the top you get to choose the crap you take and the crazy problems you encounter. Instead I ended up with doctors yelling all the time, nurses who competed against each other, workplace bullies. Now you might be able to see when I was pretty much having a corporate nervous breakdown. The worst part of the situation was I had no clue what to do. Where to go. Should I start applying for new jobs with other companies? I didn't have a side hustle. I was scared as hell, I knew I couldn't take another day, but I didn't have any other income. I spent years being dedicated and in love with corporate life, but corporate life was not loving me back.

I had learned a huge lesson. A lesson that took me 20 years to learn. I honestly feel like I learned that lesson a little late in my career. Looking back 5 years before I left in 2017, there were clear signs that I wasn't getting the satisfaction and fulfillment from my career that I thought I would. I know I ignored those signs. I ignored them because I had no idea what to do. My career was my only source of income. I sought out help from EAP (Employee Assistance Program), but they had no clue how to help me, most of them were in the same position as I was! Miserable!
I want to share my lessoned learned, tips and tools with individuals who may be experiencing the same situations early in their corporate careers, so burn out can be avoided, mental health issues be addressed early, and help design a plan that will get you to that career satisfaction.
