Dad and I

Shalini Damodaran

A daughter questions her relationship with her father on his deathbed. Taking a closer look at some of his challenges and his attitude towards them, provides her with greater clarity and a deeper appreciation of her dad. She realises how a homogenous family in a small village in Kerela could have evolved through three generations into a diverse global network of family and friends. There are compelling anecdotes of openness and inclusion from his immigrant life that are inspirational.

This memoir is a celebration of a simple man who was extraordinary in many ways. It is a call to discover the heroes we encounter everyday.

Update #8 - Happy New Year! Dec. 22, 2019

Dear subscribers,

As 'Dad and I' is being dressed for the launch and book party in 2020, I would like to acknowledge my deepest gratitude to you for your kindness.

As a first time author, the experience of writing ‘Dad and I’ posed several challenges but  reaching out to friends to pre-order my book that was still at the manuscript stage was even more daunting. I wasn’t quite sure how my family and friends, and former students and colleagues would respond. The fear of rejection was real! I was, however, pleasantly surprised by the number of people who rose to the occasion in a gesture of goodwill to give me the encouragement and support I needed. The interest many expressed in my book was heart-warming and rewarding in itself. I want to take this opportunity to thank each and every subscriber who helped make my campaign to pre-sell ‘Dad and I’ successful. We pre-sold 500 books, thanks to you. I wish I could name each and every one of you here but rest assured I will always be indebted to you, and I want you to know that you have made the world a better place by giving an unknown writer like me a chance to find an excellent publisher.
