Design for a Better Future

Phnam Bagley

The art of turning science fiction into reality.

Design for a Better Future discusses how merging technology and design can solve all the world's problems, from healthcare to education. The book aims to answer: what if we could do more to hack, ease, expand and push the limits of homo sapiens and prepare ourselves for the next stage of our evolution, whether on Earth or off?

Synopsis

How do we manage our depleting natural resources as we continue to struggle with overpopulation? How do we build happier lives when we continue to fail to educate future generations? How do we stay both physically and socially connected to one another as we continue to isolate ourselves further with technology?

We all yearn for a world that works better, serves better, feels better. We want a world that works for us, not against us. However, few visionaries know how to execute ideas that radically enhance standards of living worldwide. By merging two worlds in creative ways - design and technology - designer and futurist Phnam Bagley exposes wonderful opportunities to build that better future for all.

Today, the process of merging technology and design can be lengthy and frustrating. Egos, top-heavy corporate bureaucracy, bad habits, lack of vision, and aversion to calculated risk-taking stand in the way of greatness.

By defining a future in contrast with today’s status quo, design and technology can find common grounds to support human flourishing and sustainable practices. This is also an occasion to think far and wide about opportunities and set up a solid foundation for the next generation of thought leaders and thought doers to build on. In choosing between soft evolution and radical revolution, history tells us that the greatest innovations happen by necessity, after surviving a period of desperation. The question is: do humans feel they are desperate enough to revolutionize the world they have built? If so, do they know where to start the transformation?

One example of subjects covered by the book is "The Future is Hackable". By merging performance, science and technology, we give humans the opportunity to hack their body’s capabilities and reach greater heights. Stimulating the motor cortex to reach our state of flow can help us learn movement faster. Shining near infrared light on specific areas of the brain has shown life-changing improvements to Alzheimer’s disease patients. Sleep quality can be hacked to ensure better energy and focus during the day. Children will have the opportunity to hack their school environment to suit their intellectual and emotional needs. Childhood Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can be alleviated playing video games that feature closed feedback loops.

What if we could do more to hack, ease, expand and push the limits of homo sapiens and prepare ourselves for the next stage of our evolution, whether on Earth or off?

Other subjects include:

--The Future of Travel: how transportation technology, service robotics, low-touch economy, energy efficiency, pleasure, privacy and safety will evolve the way we move.
--The Future of Education: how aligning education with the future of work, supporting a child’s emotional wellbeing, welcoming neurodiversity, encouraging autonomy and acting sustainably will prepare our children for the world we are leaving them.
--The Future of Food: how technology can tackle the overpopulation problem, sustenance v. pleasure, cruelty v. responsibility, food design, hospitality and our relationship to the senses.
--The Future of Exploration: how humans are going to settle on the Moon and Mars, physical and mental health, the place of nature, living v. surviving.
--The Future of Sports: how pushing the limits of cognitive neuroscience, hyper-customizing protective equipment with generative design and 3D printing, and developing new biosensors will enhance performance and secure gold medals.

1106 Design, LLC

Dear Author,

You worked hard to write your manuscript; finally, it's ready to release. You know that expert assistance is needed, but perhaps you didn’t realize that working with a publisher is no longer necessary—especially publishers who charge fees to produce your book upfront and "share" more of your revenue whenever a book is sold.

1106 Design is an author services company. We offer all the editorial and design services you’d expect from a publisher, transforming your manuscript into a market-ready book. But here's the difference: we help you secure print-on-demand printing and worldwide distribution in your name. This means you earn several dollars more for every book sold instead of a meager “royalty.”

We understand that your book is not just a passion project but also a potential source of income. That's why we offer a range of services tailored to your needs at affordable prices. Depending on your manuscript's word count and complexity, our packages range from $4,000 to $10,000. And here's the best part: after this one-time investment, every penny of net revenue from book sales goes directly to you, never to us.

If this sounds like a better way to publish your book, I invite you to browse our services, design samples, no-surprises pricing, outstanding customer reviews, and educational articles at https://1106design.com. You can download a free PDF of my book, "Publish Like the Pros: A Brief Guide to Quality Self-Publishing and an Insider's Look at a Misunderstood Industry," and request a free, no-obligation consultation.

1106 Design has been in business since 2001 and is rated A+ by the Better Business Bureau. We are a “Highly Recommended Expert” at IngramSpark.com and rated "Excellent" at Alli, The Alliance for Independent Authors, at SelfPublishingAdvice.org, where you can find a "watchdog list" of the best and worst publishing services companies.

How can we serve you today?

Sincerely,
Michele DeFilippo, owner

IngramSpark

Ingram is a rather large company with several different divisions and supplies books to bookstores and libraries in over 200 countries around the world. Ingram also has a print on demand digital printing company, Lightning Source. IngramSpark is the platform that combines those two services together. At IngramSpark, we work with authors and independent publishers to print their books for orders they need (no minimum order) and we have a way to list the books as available for sale to all of Ingram’s 39,000+ customers- distributors, bookstores, retail outlets, libraries, etc., so you never miss a sale. You would provide us with the print-ready digital files (one for the cover and one for the interior) and we print the books as they are sold through our distribution partner’s websites. We pay you for those sales approximately 90 days later. The compensation you earn is based on the retail price you set, minus the wholesale discount you offer our distribution partners, minus the print cost.
