Unsung Heroes Saving Australia’s Vanishing Wildlife
Besides Indoneisa, Australia is home to more endemic animals than other place in the world. Yet, their extinction rate is the worst in the world. Second only to Indonesia, Australia is home to the largest number of endemic species in the world. Regrettably, however, according to The Threatened Species Recovery Hub, 100 of Australia’s endemic species have become extinct since European colonization in 1788. These species include a protist, one fish, three reptiles, four frogs, nine birds, ten invertebrates, 34 mammals, and 38 plants, representing approximately 10% of the world’s post-1500 recognized extinctions. Unfortunately, these extinctions continue to this day, with three verified in the last decade alone. The causes of these declines include climate change, brush fires, disease, introduced predators, and most significantly, habitat loss due to agricultural and developmental purposes.
While the Australian people generally support the protection of their wildlife, this desire is often at odds with developers, farmers, and government officials. Therefore, laws to protect these species are frequently overlooked, and even when there are laws in place, legal loopholes in current policies often render the regulations unenforceable and ineffective. As a result, these animals continue to face dangers due to expanded threats and inadequate government policies for their protection. Thousands of people dedicate their lives to working in wildlife rescue, either as rescuers, caregivers, or trained medical professionals in various capacities such as in rescue organizations, wildlife sanctuaries, and hospitals.
A majority of these individuals provide their services out of passion for the animals and receive no compensation from the government. They work endless hours with limited funds and rely heavily or solely on donations and support from sympathetic supporters from all over the world. The lack of governmental support, combined with the increased threats these animals face, poses problems for these workers. Many face burnout and leave the field altogether, others function at a substandard level, and many avoid the field altogether, resulting in the animals suffering the most.
Saving Australian wildlife is a complex problem with no easy solutions, but there are actions that the government can take to improve the chances of success for both the animals and the people who care for them. Australians are fortunate to have close access to these animals and should be more willing to take the necessary steps to protect them while there is still time. People from all over the world flock to Australia to visit its endemic animals. We all share the same planet, and while the animals may call Australia home, they belong to the earth, and we owe it to them to help protect them.
Adults with a love of animals and desire to and interest in Australia's wildlife.
Clark’s book traces the relationship between Obama and Merkel in meticulous detail, citing extensive quotations by the protagonists as well as journalists, and contextualizing their various encounters in the given political landscape. The author also includes a number of little-known anecdotes, such as one of a three-hour private dinner and talk that Merkel and Obama shared at the Adlon.-Britta Waldschmidt-Nelson
Critique: As informative as it is well written, organized and presented, “Dear Barack: The Extraordinary Partnership of Barack Obama and Angela Merkel” must be considered essential reading for both its political biographical value and for its inherently interesting details about one of America’s most popular presidents working against a stonewalling opposition in the Senate, and one of Germany’s most effective leaders in the post-Cold War era. While also available for personal reading lists of students, academia, and non-specialist general readers with an interest in the subject, “Dear Barack: The Extraordinary Partnership of Barack Obama and Angela Merkel” is an especially and unreservedly recommended addition to community, college and university library Contemporary Political Science & Political Biography collections. Midwest Book Review – Margaret Lane
The book brims with historical references, compelling opinions on contemporary politics, and the role that Merkel and Obama played in shaping contemporary geopolitics. While this is a book about the beautiful friendship between Obama and Merkel, it reads like an intelligent expose on current political issues. It is well-researched and expertly written. Claudia Clark’s writing is excellent and she possesses superior storytelling skills and the ability to keep readers absorbed ass they turn the pages. Dear Barack: The Extraordinary Partnership of Barack Obama and Angela Merkel is a beautiful work that entertains as much as it informs. Review by Franklin Bauer, The Book Commentary
Claudia Clark has narrated history in a way that is engaging and uplifting. You do not need to be a history fanatic to enjoy this book. The author conveys history in a way that is compelling and captivating. She pulls in the reader and puts them in the meetings and private conversations between the two. This is a well-researched account of the inspiring relationship between these two highly admired leaders. Her regard for both of them shines through her words and her tone.
The author even adds a little bit of Obama’s wit and charm to the story. Her narration is nothing short of gripping. It is the kind of book you discuss with your friends and family because there is so much intellectually invigorating content. Literary Titan
