There are several books on Design Thinking methodology and its impact on the creative process, but not specifically on the emotional connectivity that drives unique user experiences in the spaces we design. For example: Through my work at the Hotel Bel-Air, in the 11 years as the resident interior designer; I received calls from guests who wanted to recreate all aspects of the guestrooms they inhabited for a long weekend or the summer months in their own homes. These clients from around the country or the globe felt an indescribable connection to the guestroom suites; requesting the same rooms on their return to Los Angeles. In creating the mystique of the Hotel Bel-Air each of the 98 suites was uniquely designed based on location, daylighting, and proximity to the many hidden treasures on property.
The guests read novels in the gardens, or private patios rested at the pool in the quiet of the canyon and enjoyed this secret oasis in Los Angeles. These special guests wanted to purchase all elements of the guestrooms and they ordered paint colors, lighting, fabrics to create the bedding, draperies, canopies, sheets, pillows, decorative rugs, upholstered headboards, furniture; including the mattress sets. They chose no other hotel but this one for the design that created the emotional connectivity to the designed spaces.
Spaces We Design is an educational book in the field of Design/Design Thinking with the goal to bring awareness of the emotional connectivity to designed spaces and how designers have the ability to connect users to spaces. The book offers different conversations with designers, market leaders, and manufacturers, to learn how each uniquely uses design thinking methodology to map user needs and innovate richer user experiences.
The intersection of light, color, spatial planning, art, and the awareness of the human spirit is the component that creates the perception to the user of how we should experience, an interior and exterior design space. This important quality expressed through the design is the emotional consequence of a newly designed space.
Through years of working with clients in different market sectors, teaching design thinking, space planning, interior design, and shared insights from colleagues, Sybil has discovered a path and journey we have shared in defining user needs. Different approaches align with the theories that Design thinking is non-linear and brings about unexpected outcomes.
Designers, School or Universities of Design, Companies, Manufacturers, ...people who are design problem solvers, and those interested in understanding methods of connecting clients to their spaces.
