Peregrine opened his eyes – a dark tunnel enveloped him, and all sorts of images flashed past his eyes. It was like being in a time machine as the centuries counted down in his consciousness.
Then suddenly, his carbon-fiber craft crashed to a standstill, and there was a deathly hush.
Peregrine raised his head, and his gaze met the shocked faces of a tribe of strangers staring back at him. They wore long robes, and were leading a procession of the ugliest, four-legged animals he had ever seen.
After some indecision they finally helped him out of the craft and offered him a drink of water from a goat skin pouch. It passed through his mind that this was the act of a good Samaritan. Now where had he heard that before?
One of the tribesmen passed him a piece of linen cloth and showed him how to wind it round his head as protection from the desert sun. One of the ugly. camels knelt down, and Peregrine hoisted himself onto its shoulders.
As the procession crested the hills that looked down on Cairo, Peregrine suddenly realized where they were. The famous Pyramids of Egypt lay before him. He knew they had been built supposedly as burial chambers for the Kings of Egypt, but at the same time, he knew that the triangular shape of a pyramid was the only structure that could withstand a nuclear explosion.
As they drew nearer, Peregrine recognized the alien shapes of peoples and vehicles from outer space which had been carved in the stone. He had an idea who had been involved in building the pyramids, and they had not used local slave labor. Besides, the pyramids of Egypt were the only buildings visible from space and could be used as GPS channels by wanderers from beyond.
Peregrine rubbed his ear and blinked and to his amazement as he was instantly transported to the ancient Mongolian Empire and open his eyes in the court of Khublai Khan the emperor of China. Marco Polo, another renowned traveler, and the emperor’s trade representative in Southeast Asia, stepped forward to greet him. Peregrine hastily dismounted and presented his Starlink timekeeper as a special gift for the emperor, much as Marco Polo had brought gifts from the pope when he had left Venice on his travels in 1271 AD.
Small yellow men with slanting eyes, wearing their hair in pigtails, offered refreshments with fruit and spices bought and paid for from the teeming market by using an early form of money.
Rickshaws rattled back and forth across the cobblestones, and in the distance, Peregrine could see the Great Wall of China. He knew it had taken roughly 1000 years to build and stretched for some 20,000 km.
Peregrine admired the beautiful colors of the silk robes worn by the court attendants and remembered that China had exported silk and spices to the West, so that the trade route connecting East and West had become known as the Silk Route.
As Peregrine was examining the hand-written scrolls, and manuscripts in the palace library, he rubbed his ear again, and instantly the old Chinese librarian disappeared, and became a modern-day student, sporting a pair of spectacles, shorts, sandals, and a book bag. He held a physics book in one hand and a cell phone in the other. They were now in a magnificent library at the University of Peking.
All information was accessed by computer and search engines such as Google were common tools. Knowledge, like world population, had exploded and quantum and astrophysics hinted at a parallel existence. Man was exploring the universe, which was exactly what Peregrine was doing!
