About the author

Philip Sugai is a Professor of Marketing within Doshisha University's Graduate School of Business and a Senior Fellow at the OSIPP-IAFOR Research Center at Osaka Unviersity.  Dr. Sugai also served as a Visiting Professor for Stanford University from 2015 - 2017, where he taught Innovation in Japan at the Stanford Overseas campus in Kyoto. Prior to joining the Doshisha University faculty, Dr. Sugai taught at the International University of Japan in Niigata where he also served as Dean and Associate Dean of the IUJ Business School for six years.

Dr. Sugai is the author of two books, The Value Plan and The Six Immutable Laws of Mobile Business (John Wiley & Sons) and has published case studies with Ivey Business School Publishing on Nestle’s KITKAT Japan, Hosoo (330+ year old Nishijin Weaving company), AGL, Hatsune Miku and Walt Disney Internet Group.

He received his Doctorate degree from Waseda University and his M.B.A. in Marketing and Operations Management from New York University’s Stern School of Business. He has worked as a marketing executive at American Express, Muze, Inc., and Lightningcast, Inc., and serves as a marketing advisor and marketing strategy consultant to companies both in Japan and globally.

He is the father of two sons, and is a 6th degree black belt in Iyonoma Ryu Aikido.

Update #12 - Wishing you health, safety and peace of mind! April 8, 2020

Hello from Kyoto,

I know that you (and the world) have many other important things to focus on, so please excuse my very brief email interruption!  

First, and most importantly, I would like to send you my heartfelt wishes for health and safety during this incredibly challenging time.  I only hope that you, your family, and all those close to you are healthy, safe and managing to deal with this difficult situation as painlessly as possible.

Because it's been so long between updates, I just wanted to let you know that things are continuing to progress with the transition of The Value Plan into "Building Value from Marketing: A Step-by-step Guide" to be published by Routledge later this year.  I submitted the final manuscript in mid-February, and it is now under review by their editorial team in the UK.

They've also decided on a final cover design (attached here), which I actually really like (and hope you do too)!  

As we get closer to a final publication date, I will be back in touch.  But between now and then, I will do my best to not fill your email inbox with minor details.  If in the meantime you see or hear about any stories or acts by companies, groups or individuals that show the benefits of a value-focus (rather than Profit-at-all-costs focus), I'd appreciate any and all examples that you can share.
