Synopsis

Thirteen-year-old Amelia Wainwright’s world shatters when her father—an undercover agent—vanishes without a trace. Refusing to accept his disappearance as final, she launches a desperate mission to uncover what really happened, accompanied by her loyal best friend, Sebastian, and her father’s elusive colleague, Rex. Their journey takes them far from home and deep into the chaotic beauty of Cairo, where Amelia stumbles into a mystery more bizarre than she ever imagined.

While searching through her father’s belongings, a strange encounter changes everything: a mysterious woman transforms into a mouse before Amelia’s eyes, dropping a peculiar watch in the process. Amelia retrieves it—only to discover that the watch holds an extraordinary power: it allows its wearer to transform into animals.

As she learns to wield this impossible new ability, Amelia finds herself drawn into the secretive world of the Chimera Project, the same operation her father was investigating when he vanished. When her mother is kidnapped from their home, the mission becomes personal. The watch, it turns out, is more than a weapon—it’s the key to everything.

Their search leads them through the shadowy underworld of Cairo, ancient tombs and museums, and the scorching Egyptian desert, pursued relentlessly by the enigmatic and dangerous Agents of Celine—Windsor, Sherwood, and the sinister Celine herself. With Rex captured and Sebastian accidentally transported to the North Pole, Amelia is left to navigate treacherous terrain alone, aided only by two new allies, Nadia and Omar. But trust is fragile, and betrayal lurks closer than she realises.

The final confrontation unfolds in Celine’s secret desert stronghold, where Amelia must face the monstrous Chimera—a mythical creature with the body of a lion, a goat’s head protruding from its back, and a serpent for a tail. With her parents’ lives hanging in the balance, and the full force of the Chimera Project revealed, Amelia must use every skill she’s gained to defeat her enemies, expose the traitor in their midst, and protect the world from the terrifying power the watch contains.

Amelia Wainwright and the Chimera Project is the first book in a planned trilogy. The second installment, Amelia Wainwright and the Seven Silver Darts, is already in first draft form.

Sales arguments

  • A Shape-Shifting Adventure with Cinematic Scope Amelia Wainwright and the Chimera Project combines high-stakes espionage with ancient mythology and sci-fi elements in a vividly realised international setting. From the bustling streets of Cairo to the heart of the Egyptian desert, the story’s immersive world-building and fast-paced action make it perfect for fans of cinematic, globe-trotting adventures like Indiana Jones, Artemis Fowl, and Alex Rider—with a fresh twist of magical realism.
  • A Female Protagonist with Grit, Heart, and Agency Amelia is a determined, quick-thinking heroine who doesn’t wait to be rescued—she takes charge of her own story. Her emotional drive, layered backstory, and evolution from curious daughter to empowered spy-in-training make her a relatable and inspiring lead for middle-grade and YA readers, especially girls hungry for complex, capable protagonists.
  • Original Magical System Rooted in Transformation At the heart of the book is a unique magical device: a watch that allows the wearer to morph into animals. This compelling and visual concept invites natural sequels and merchandising potential (different forms, different animal abilities), while also serving as a metaphor for identity, adaptability, and inner strength—making it emotionally resonant as well as action-driven.
  • Built-In Series with Strong Continuity and Market Longevity The Chimera Project is just the beginning. With Amelia Wainwright and the Seven Silver Darts already in first draft and a third book outlined, the series offers strong continuity, clear growth arcs, and escalating stakes. It’s a ready-made franchise for a publisher or agent looking to develop long-term reader loyalty in the 9–14 age bracket.
  • Cross-Genre Appeal with Themes of Family, Betrayal, and Legacy Though the story is action-packed and rich in fantastical elements, it’s grounded in themes that resonate deeply: a child searching for her lost parent, loyalty tested by betrayal, and the weight of legacy. These universal emotional anchors give the story crossover potential—appealing to fans of both spy thrillers and magical adventures, and adaptable across formats (books, graphic novels, screen).

Chapter 1

“Agent Silver, can you hear me?”
BOOM!
An explosion rocked the nearby buildings, causing panicked shouts to echo through the ancient marketplace in Tangier, Morocco. A flock of startled pigeons launched into the sky, wings fluttering wildly.
“I’m fine,” Agent Silver muttered, exhaustion etched on his face as he dived into a nearby doorway. “I just need to get away from these bad guys.”
He was in Tangier on an important mission: to locate the elusive criminal mastermind, Celine, who was on the most wanted list in numerous countries. Fortunately, he’d found her. Unfortunately, her dangerous henchmen were now chasing him down.
Pressing his body against the cool wall of a dark corridor, Silver listened to the thudding footsteps of his pursuers on the other side of the door he’d just slammed shut.
Sweat beaded on his forehead as he gripped the walkie-talkie tightly in his shaking hand. “I think they’ve gone,” he whispered into the radio.
“You have to be at the rendezvous point in ten minutes,”the voice crackled back, urgent.
Ten minutes?
He couldn’t possibly get there in time.
Peering out from the doorway, he scanned the bustling marketplace. Narrow alleyways snaked between overflowing shops, and the sounds of bartering and haggling hammered in his ears. The city was a maze — and getting lost here meant trouble.
Big trouble.
He had found Celine. Now it was up to the local authorities to arrest her. He’d done his part. It was time to go.
“I’ll be there,” he promised, voice tight with the strain of keeping both his excitement and fear in check.
Ten minutes.
Ten minutes to escape the labyrinthine market.
Ten minutes to leave Tangier behind.
Ten minutes to finally complete his mission — and, more importantly, go home.
He couldn’t wait to go home!
One way or another… in ten minutes, it would all be over.
Silver tiptoed out of the shadowed corridor and slipped back into the teeming marketplace. As he went, his eyes darted around, scanning for danger. The explosion had transformed the normally lively square — once filled with colourful scarves, overflowing fruit stalls, and the rhythmic thrum of conversation — into an empty, eerie space.
A ghost town.
Sirens wailed in the distance.
Silver took a deep breath, a surge of confidence flooding through him. He could do this. He’d been training his whole life for moments like this.
He crossed the square quickly, heart hammering. Then, reaching into his worn backpack, he discreetly pulled out a gadget disguised as a chocolate bar – a GPS tracker. Its small screen blinked, displaying a route leading straight to the rendezvous point.
Just eight minutes away, he thought. He could make it.
Suddenly, a voice boomed at him from behind, causing Agent Silver to whip around. His blood turned to ice as he watched a figure emerge from an alley, a glint of metal briefly catching the sunlight. A second later, a gunshot echoed in the air, the bullet whizzing just past Silver’s ear.
He didn’t need to translate the shout that followed —“Le voilà!” — to know what it meant.
There he is!
Silver groaned and broke into a sprint. He was too close to the finish line to get caught now. Not when he’d discovered Celine’s secret plan. There was no way she wanted that information to fall into the hands of British intelligence.
As he sprinted through the crowds, Agent Silver could barely see through the blur of movement. His lungs burned and his legs ached, but he didn’t stop. He couldn’t stop.
Footsteps thundered behind him. Every turn, every weaving movement through shopfronts and stalls felt like it took an eternity. He didn’t dare look back. His eyes were locked solely on the rendezvous point.
He was so close!
Suddenly, his radio crackled again. “Agent Silver, come in! Are you all right?” It was the familiar voice of his handler.
Silver snatched the radio from his pocket, adrenaline coursing through his body. “I’m being chased!” he gasped, voice hoarse from the exertion.
“How far are you from safety?”
“Almost there!” he wheezed, his legs still burning with each frantic stride.
Despite the pain, he pushed on.
Just ahead, two figures stood waiting for him — a man and a woman, their faces obscured by the fading light.
This wasn’t right.
“How many people should be waiting for me?” he rasped into the radio, a flicker of doubt creeping in. “Who are they?”
Static crackled in response.
Silver cursed under his breath. The radio had been playing up all day.
His pursuers’ footsteps echoed behind him, getting closer with each desperate breath. They were gaining on him.
“I can’t understand you!” he shouted into the walkie. “Are there supposed to be two people or not?”
Again, there was no reply, not that it really mattered at this point — he had no choice but to continue.
As he approached the figures, a chill crept down his spine.
The man and woman were standing casually, their body language relaxed. Too relaxed.
Behind them, slumped against a wall, lay another figure — unconscious.
“Rex, I’m in big trouble!” Silver shouted into the radio, abruptly stopping.
Before he could say another word, the woman spoke, her voice icy. “You have something that belongs to me, Agent Silver,” she said, glaring at him, “and I want it back.”
The man stepped forward, his face menacing. He tossed a small canister at Silver’s feet.
A sharp hiss filled the air as a strange gas erupted from the cylinder.
Instinctively, Agent Silver tried to cover his nose and mouth, but the world around him blurred. Darkness crept intothe edges of his vision.
And then...
Silence.

Chapter 16

As soon as Amelia and Sebastian stepped through the shimmering gateway, they were hit by a wave of searing heat. The air hung thick and heavy, clinging to their skin like a suffocating blanket. Compared to Victoria Falls, this control room felt like a furnace.
It was chaos. Broken crates lay scattered across the dusty floor, their contents spilling out in disarray — strange goggles with blinking lights, metallic gloves with glowing wires, and peculiar devices that whirred and sputtered even in their damaged state. It was a treasure trove of bizarre gadgets, and Sebastian seemed immediately fascinated.
“Whoa, check this stuff out!”
Amelia barely heard him. Her gaze had been drawn to something else entirely — a massive window spanning the farwall. She moved towards it, breath catching in her throat at the incredible view.
Beyond the glass stretched a vast desert bathed in the golden hues of the setting sun. The sky was painted with streaks of orange and pink, the horizon seemingly endless.
“Look,” she murmured in wonder, pointing at the window before walking over to the main door. Sebastian followed.
They moved down a short, dimly lit corridor, the silence broken only by the soft crunch of their footsteps on the thin layer of sand that had crept in from outside. As they reached the end of the hallway, Amelia’s heart pounded with anticipation. She hesitated for just a second, then pushed the door wide.
They stepped into the open desert — and froze.
The vast expanse of golden sand stretched out in every direction, the setting sun casting long shadows across the dunes. The sight left them both momentarily speechless.
Then, when they turned back to see where they’d just come from, their eyes widened in disbelief. The control room was built into the base of one of the Pyramids of Giza! The massive stone structure loomed above them, its ancient, weathered surface glowing in the golden light.
“We... we were just inside a pyramid?” Sebastian whispered, eyes wide.
Amelia nodded as the reality of their location sank in. “Looks like it. At least we know we’re in the right place.” She took a deep breath, trying to calm down. “Come on, let’s get back inside and check out those gadgets. Maybe we can figure out how to find my mum and dad.” And then go home, she thought desperately. Even before her dad went missing, when she was fun and adventurous, this would have been a lot to deal with. Now? It seemed an almost impossible situation to navigate.
But she knew she had to try.
Back inside the pyramid’s control room, Sebastianstarted rummaging through the scattered crates like a kid in a toy shop.
“Check this out, Amelia!” he exclaimed as he pulled out a strange-looking belt. Its metallic surface was decorated with blinking lights and intricate patterns, pulsing softly as if alive with energy.
Sebastian’s eyes sparkled as he fumbled with the buckle, strapping it on before Amelia could object.
“Careful, Sebastian!” she cried, a note of worry creeping into her voice. “We don’t know what that does!”
But it was too late.
The moment the belt clicked into place, Sebastian let out a startled yelp as his feet left the ground.
He was floating.
“Amelia! Help!” he squeaked, flailing wildly.
Despite the overwhelming nature of their mission, Amelia couldn’t help but burst into laughter at the sight of her friend floating up towards the ceiling. Jumping onto a chair and grabbing his ankles just in time, she anchored him with both hands, still shaking with giggles. “Don’t worry,” she wheezed between laughs, “I won’t let you drift off… probably!”
“Don’t let go!” Sebastian ducked his head to avoid hitting the ceiling, his limbs flailing uselessly against the strange invisible force that held him aloft.
“I won’t!” she shouted between giggles. “What buttons did you press?”
“I didn’t p-press anything! I just p-put it on!” His eyes darted around wildly. “If I take it off, I’ll fall!”
Amelia glanced around urgently, the laughter dying in her throat. She wasn’t strong enough to catch him if he fell, and transforming again wasn’t an option in this cramped space.
Finally, her gaze landed on the scattered crates of gadgets strewn across the floor. Maybe there was a remote in there —or a manual, or something that could help.
“Hold on tight, Sebastian,” she instructed. “I’m going to see if we can find a way to turn that thing off.”
Carefully, Amelia let go of his ankles and jumped down from the chair.
As soon as her feet hit the ground, she started searchingthrough the jumbled mess in the crates. Her fingers brushed against metal and plastic, wires and circuits, but there was nothing that looked even vaguely like a remote or a manual. Nothing that could offer an immediate solution.
Then, as she dived deeper into one of the crates, her fingers brushed against something cool and smooth. Amelia paused, her curiosity piqued.
As she pulled it out, her eyes widened in surprise. It looked like a modified magnifying glass, but with a small keypad and a glowing map embedded in the handle.
“Look at this,” she called up to Sebastian. She held up the device for him to see, her grip tightening around the handle. “Maybe this can help!”
“I don’t care what that does!” Sebastian shouted. “Just get me down from here!”
Amelia studied the device, but she had no idea what she could do with it. Frustrated, she put it back down.
“Well?” Sebastian asked.
“I’m trying,” she assured him, her eyes darting frantically across the room, scanning the jumble of gadgets for anything that might help them. Then, out of the corner of her eye, she caught a glint of metal — a remote-like device, sleek and simple, with a single pulsating button at its centre.
“This might be it!” Amelia shouted, snatching up the device. Then, after hesitating for only the briefest of moments, she slammed her thumb down on the button.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa!” Sebastian’s panicked cry filled the room as a sudden, ominous whirring sound erupted around them. He craned his neck upwards, his eyes widening in alarm as the ceiling — previously solid stone — began to grind open. The harsh sound of stone scraping against stone filled the air, and then a thin sliver of light pierced through the growing gap.
“Oh no,” Amelia breathed, a sinking feeling forming in her stomach.
The device in her hand hummed ominously. She hammered the button again, but instead of reversing the process, the whirring only intensified. The ceiling continued to gape wider, revealing an immense vertical shaft that seemed to plunge through the very heart of the pyramid.
Sunlight streamed in, bathing the room in a beautiful yet ominous golden light that seemed to make the ancient stone walls glow from within.
Sebastian’s scream echoed through the chamber, the sound reverberating off the stone walls as the opening above them grew larger by the second. He wasn’t just floating anymore — he was ascending. “I don’t want to go into space!” he shrieked as he was drawn inexorably upwards.“Help me!”
Amelia stood frozen to the spot, her mouth gaping as she watched in horror. The ceiling had now vanished completely, leaving Sebastian caught in an invisible current that was shooting him up through the shaft.
Finally jumping into action, Amelia scrambled out of the pyramid, her feet pounding against the ancient stone as she raced into the open air.
The afternoon sun beat down on her back, its relentless heat only adding to the pressure of the moment. Amelia’s vision was blurred without her glasses, but she squinted hard, forcing her eyes to focus as she scanned the Egyptian sky. There, high above her, she could just make out the small, struggling figure of Sebastian. Her heart leapt into her throat.
To her immense relief, Sebastian wasn’t plummeting to his death as she had feared, though his situation was far from safe. He was dangling precariously from the very peak of the pyramid, his tiny form clinging desperately to the smooth, polished stone.
Amelia quickly surveyed her surroundings, searching desperately for anything that could help. But the landscape around her offered no easy solutions — there were no ladders, no ropes, nothing she could use to reach him.
Giving up, however, simply wasn’t an option. She couldn’t leave him up there, terrified and alone.
She couldn’t lose him too.
She had to get him down.
Her eyes darted from the watch on her wrist to the tiny figure clinging desperately to the pyramid’s peak.
“What kind of animal...” Amelia muttered to herself, her mind racing. She needed something agile, something that could navigate the steep, smooth sides of the pyramid with ease.
Suddenly, an image flashed in her mind — a powerful creature with the strength and climbing prowess of a true champion.
“A gorilla!” she exclaimed, the word bursting from her lips like a sudden revelation.
But transforming in public was a huge risk — there was no way a giant gorilla scaling one of the famous pyramids would go unnoticed. It would definitely become headline news, and the consequences would be disastrous.
But what other choice did she have?
She glanced back up at Sebastian. His safety was all that mattered; she’d have to deal with the consequences later.
So, with a deep breath, she punched in the transformation sequence on the watch. The familiar prickling sensation began to spread through her body, but she pushed it aside, focusing only on one thing — getting to Sebastian before it was too late.
Within seconds, Amelia was gone, replaced by a powerful silverback gorilla. The transformation was swift and seamless, her body adapting instantly to its new form. It was an incredibly strange feeling, being so big and powerful… and yet still being Amelia. But she didn’t have time to dwell on that fact.
Her powerful legs propelled her up the smooth stone surface of the pyramid with surprising ease, each movement deliberate and controlled. Seconds ticked by, each step bringing her closer to Sebastian.
Finally, after what felt like forever, she reached the peak. She steadied herself, her massive hands gripping the stone as she looked up at her friend.
Sebastian, eyes wide with relief and disbelief, looked down at her. “A-Amelia?”
She grunted in confirmation, her massive form exuding both strength and reassurance as she gently scooped Sebastian into her powerful arms. Despite her size, her movements were surprisingly nimble, and with a swift manoeuvre, Sebastian unclipped the rogue belt from his waist, sending it plummeting back down the shaft it had just floated him through.
Amelia noticed that, far below, a growing crowd had gathered at the base of the pyramid, their faces a mixture of awe and terror as they gazed up at the towering gorilla.
She knew she couldn’t linger.
So, with a mighty roar that echoed across the vast desert, she began her descent.
The crowd below gasped, some stepping back in fear, others rooted to the spot in sheer disbelief.
When she reached the base — and was out of view of the crowd — the timer on the watch kicked in. In one fluid motion, Amelia transformed back into her human form, collapsing on the sand beside a relieved-looking Sebastian. The shift was swift, but the toll it took on her was immediate. The transformation had drained her completely.
“Ugh,” she groaned, struggling to stand. Her legs felt like lead, and exhaustion weighed heavily on her eyelids, pulling her towards unconsciousness. “I feel… weird.”
Gently, Sebastian helped her up and walked back with her through the tunnel and into the control room.
Once inside, he guided her over to a chair as she fought to stay awake.
“I told you not to use that watch,” he said, shaking his head. “But I’m glad you did. Thank you.”
Amelia shrugged, giving him a soft smile. “Rex showed me how to use it — properly. When I change voluntarily, I can control what I’m doing as long as I only set it for a short amount of time.”
“And what happens if it’s not voluntary?” he asked.
“After twenty hours, the transformation becomes permanent,” Amelia explained. “And the longer it lasts, the less human I feel. And… if someone tries to remove it while I’ve got no control, I’ll change into a bear. On the third attempt to take it off, I’ll be a bear forever.”
Sebastian gaped at her. “That’s mad.”
“I know, but… the transformation… when I do change, it feels... wonderful.” Her voice softened, as though savouring the memory. “I can feel the power, the energy...”
Sebastian studied her face, trying to read the sincerity in her eyes. “You’re sure you can control it? That it won’t—”
“It’s fine,” she said with a nod.
Sebastian nodded. Then, his gaze fell on the remote-like device that had caused all this chaos in the first place. Hesitating for just a moment, he picked it up and pressed the button again. The device whirred to life, and — to his relief — a section of the ceiling began to close, thankfully faster than it had opened.
Amelia looked up, shaking her head. Maybe it needed to complete the full opening sequence before it could reverse.
“Ugh, I really miss the internet,” Sebastian hissed, hisgaze drifting around the room. After a moment, he walked over to a small screen embedded in the wall, hovering his finger over the activation button.
A tired yet curious Amelia followed him.
“Come on, come on,” he muttered impatiently. “I swear, if this thing doesn’t work...” He gave it a decisive press, and the screen flickered to life, a video feed filling the display.
What appeared on the screen made Amelia’s jaw drop in shock.
A large group of Egyptian officials had surrounded the base of the pyramid. Uniformed officers and suited figures bustled about, their movements purposeful as they secured the scene. The flurry of activity was unmistakable — this was a full-scale investigation.
The realisation hit her like a sandstorm.
The sight of a giant gorilla perched on top of one of the Great Pyramids had definitely not gone unnoticed.

Chapter 30

“Let me out!” Amelia screamed, pounding on the unyielding metal door until her fists ached. The door didn’t budge.
Then, her heightened senses — honed by her recent transformations — picked up the faint murmur of voices on the other side. Windsor and Sherwood were still there, their indistinct words fuelling her growing anxiety.
Taking a deep breath, Amelia forced herself to calm down and survey her surroundings. The corridor was long and dimly lit, a single row of overhead lights casting strips of shadows across the smooth floor. At the far end, a large doorway loomed, offering a glimpse into another room, its interior shrouded in darkness.
“Mum? Dad?” she called, her voice trembling slightly.
No answer.
So, left with no other option, Amelia cautiously stepped forwards. Something about this place felt very wrong. Why had they put her here — alone, in a sterile, empty hallway that led only to one ominously lit room?
As she got closer, a prickling sensation danced across her skin, raising the hairs on her arms. It was a primal instinct, a warning deep in her gut. Something was waiting for her in that room. Something she wasn’t sure she was ready to face.
Taking another deep breath, Amelia peeked nervously into the darkness. Her night vision allowed her to see perfectly, but instead of a small room, she found a large space leading into another corridor, once again shrouded in shadow.
Swallowing hard, she steeled her nerves and stepped cautiously into the new space. A sense of dread washed over her as she scanned the chamber, her breath catching in her throat as her eyes fell upon an utterly chilling sight.
Bones — piles of them — littered the corners like discarded toys.
As panic surged through her, Amelia instinctively spun around to run back the way she’d come, but the door she’d just walked through was now closed, sealing her inside. There was no way out. She was trapped.
Taking a moment to think, Amelia forced herself to focus. Panicking wouldn’t help. Besides, she’d gone through a lot over the past few days, things she never thought she’d be able to do. She was stronger and smarter than she’d been giving herself credit for. She thought of Mr Boon and almost smiled. He’d be proud of her realisation. She’d have to tell him when she got back — if she ever got back.
Trying not to think about home too much, she continued walking until she reached the corridor at the far end of the space. This time, instead of a single passage, a maze-like structure stretched before her, with multiple passages branching out into numerous dark openings.
Her heart hammered in her chest. What was this? Which way should she go?
Before she could make a decision, a low, menacing growl echoed over to her from one of the passageways.
Amelia froze. Her heightened senses — now on overdrive — picked up the pungent scent of… something wild.
Instinctively, her hand flew to the watch, the thought of transforming filling her with a mix of excitement and trepidation. Should she transform? And if so, into what? She had no idea what lurked in the shadows; transforming into a tiger might not be enough.
What if this creature is bigger, stronger?
The growl echoed again, closer this time.
Backing into the middle of the bone-strewn chamber, Amelia stood in complete silence — save for the rapid pounding of her heart — as the growl came again. It was even nearer now, and it made her blood run cold.
The air grew thick with a strange mix of smells — something animalistic, something acrid — and then, she heard it: the unmistakable bleating of a goat.
A goat?!
In that instant, a monstrous silhouette filled the doorway opposite her, far larger than anything she had ever encountered. The growl escalated into a deafening roar, but it wasn’t the only sound. A loud hissing also filled the air, followed by another desperate bleat.
As the creature lumbered into the room, Amelia stumbled backwards, nearly tripping over a bleached white bone.
The sight that greeted her was a nightmare come to life. The creature resembled a monstrous lion, its mane a tangled mess of fur. But unlike any lion Amelia had ever seen, this one sported a second head — a goat’s head. It protruded grotesquely from its back, emitting high-pitched, terrified bleats. The strangest feature of all was its writhing tail, its tip a fanged snake’s head hissing in venomous threat.
So that’s a Chimera? Amelia wandered in awe, her mind trying to comprehend the horrifying creature before her. I sure could use some of that spark my mum was talking about right now.
The thought of her mum made her sad, but she didn’t exactly have long to dwell on it.
The lion-goat-snake roared, the sound reverberating through the bone-filled room. Then, before she could even react, the creature inhaled deeply, its chest expanding like a bellows. With a fiery whoosh, a blast of flames erupted from the creature’s mouth, engulfing the room in a searing inferno.
Reacting purely on instinct, Amelia flung herself backwards, narrowly avoiding the scorching flames. The intense heat seared past her, singeing the hair on her arm and sending a jolt of pain shooting up her sleeve.
Gasping for breath, she quickly scrambled to her feet, her eyes darting to the watch on her wrist. This creature was gigantic — at least eight feet tall. If she didn’t transform, she’d be next in that horrifying pile of bones.
She thought back through all the animals she’d seen on the watch screen, searching for something powerful and large enough to face this monstrosity. Cheetahs were good for running, wolves worked in packs… neither would help here. Then, a cold shiver ran through her body as it hit her: the only creature she could think of that might stand a chance was a grizzly bear. Grizzly bears were enormous, powerful, and ferocious.
But it was risky. The last time she’d transformed into a bear, it had been involuntary, and she could barely remember what had happened. It had been completely different to all the other animals she’d changed into, as if there was something inside the grizzly bear that overpowered her humanity. Would she remain in control this time?
Yes, it was an extremely risky choice, but against this fire-breathing nightmare, it felt like her only option.
She couldn’t hesitate any longer. Glaring at the approaching Chimera, Amelia started turning the dial on the watch.
The familiar warmth pulsed in Amelia’s hand as the watch hummed to life.
She was going to do whatever it takes.
Time for that spark, Amelia. You’ve got this.
So, with determination, she slammed her hand down on the button.
The bones beneath her began to crunch ominously under the weight of her shifting body, and as the change took hold, a deep, primal growl rumbled from her throat.
Moments later, the transformation was complete. Amelia — no longer a frightened girl — now stood tall on powerful legs, fur bristling, claws extended. She was a grizzly bear, ready to fight for her survival. For her family. For her life.
But the Chimera didn’t attack.
It stopped short, staring at Amelia with a mix of confusion and… bemusement? The lion’s head cocked slightly to the side, while the goat’s eyes blinked fast and the snake’s tongue flicked nervously in the air.
Seizing the opportunity, Amelia let out a fierce roar and charged forwards, muscles coiled and ready to strike.
But instead of meeting her attack head-on, the Chimera let out a startled yelp and turned tail. It lumbered back through the doorway it had entered through, the goat’s head bleating frantically on its back and the snake’s head hissing in what sounded suspiciously like fear.
Amelia skidded to a halt, her massive paws digging into the floor as — in stunned silence — she watched the bizarre Chimera disappearing down one of the maze-like passageways.
Confused, she sniffed the air. The scent of the creature lingered, but the only sound in the room was the rhythmic dripping of… something. She didn’t know what.
Fortunately — perhaps due to all her practice, perhaps because it was her choice — Amelia still had her humanity intact, and she remembered the timer she’d set: she had two hours before she changed back. That should be enough time to keep her safe… for now.
Just then, a new sound filled the air — a hiss, but different from the Chimera’s snake head. Amelia’s head perked up, alert. It seemed to be coming from above.
Looking up, she spotted a grate in the ceiling. Thick green gas was billowing out of the cracks.
Panicking, she let out an enormous roar before dropping down to all fours and sprinting into the maze.
The scents were overwhelming — damp earth, stale air, and a faint trace of the Chimera. She had no idea which way the creature had gone, and frankly, she wasn’t eager to find out. The power of being a grizzly bear was intoxicating — she felt invincible, her muscles rippling with strength — but alongside that power, another feeling bubbled up: responsibility. She had to find a way out, not just for herself, but for her family. And she knew she could do it if she really put her mind to it.
But, of course, the question remained: How much longer would Amelia be in charge of her mind, before she gave in to the primal instincts of the grizzly?
As the stench of the Chimera grew, Amelia rounded a corner and skidded to a halt, her massive paws sending dirt flying in all directions. Before her was a vast chamber, and at the far end — bathed in an eerie green glow emanating from the cracks in the ceiling — stood the Chimera.
But something was wrong.
The monstrous creature didn’t roar a challenge. Instead, it huddled near the glowing cracks, its three heads trembling. The goat’s head bleated pitifully, its eyes wide with fear, and even the snake’s hiss sounded more like a whimper than a threat.
Confusion warred with Amelia’s primal instincts. Now, the Chimera looked less like a fire-breathing nightmare and more like a scared animal trapped in a cage. Well, at least they had something in common.
Taking a tentative step forwards, Amelia let out a low growl, more of a question than a threat.
The Chimera flinched, its eyes wide.
Was it afraid of her, or of the strange gas seeping from the ceiling?
The answer came in another loud hiss that sent shivers down Amelia’s spine. Green tendrils of gas continued to snake out of the cracks, their luminescence casting a sickly glow across the entire chamber. The Chimera, its fear now seemingly forgotten, let out a desperate bleat and charged past Amelia, disappearing into a side passage.
Coughing and blinking back tears, Amelia tried to follow the monstrous creature, but the strange gas was sapping her strength. A moment later, her powerful legs buckled beneath her and she collapsed on the cold stone floor. Her eyelids drooped, heavy and unwilling to stay open.
Within seconds, the green tendrils seemed to fill her entire vision, and then… darkness.

When Amelia finally opened her eyes, a throbbing headache greeted her. Disoriented, she blinked, trying to focus. Gone was the grizzly bear’s strength, replaced by the familiar ache of her human form.
She began to panic — how long had she been unconscious? Where was the Chimera? What was going on?
A low snort startled her.
There, bathed in the sickly green glow emanating from the ceiling cracks, sat the monstrous creature. It wasn’t roaring or attacking now. Instead, it huddled close to her, the goat head bleating softly, and even the snake seemed to have retracted its fangs.
When she didn’t react, the creature lumbered closer, bringing with it the stench of burnt fur and sulphur.
A terrified Amelia pressed herself against the wall, her heart hammering against her ribs. She expected a deafening roar, a blast of fire… but instead, the creature stopped a few feet away, its three heads bobbing awkwardly.
A low rumble emerged from its throat. Not a roar… It was almost like a… purr?
Confused, Amelia squinted at the creature. The lion head — the most ferocious-looking of the three — tilted to the side, its yellow eyes blinking slowly.
Tentatively, she lifted a hand, and the creature flinched rather than attacking. A second later, it nudged its massive head closer, sniffing cautiously at her outstretched fingers.
“Are you... okay?” Amelia whispered.
The lion head let out another rumbling purr, its long tongue flicking out in a curious lick. The goat head bleated softly, and even the snake’s hiss sounded more like a questioning wheeze.
“You’re not dangerous,” Amelia murmured, “are you? You were just scared.”
Just then, a booming voice echoed through the chamber, shattering the fragile truce. “Well, that was disappointing. We were hoping for a bit more… action.” The voice — unmistakably Celine’s — held a sharp edge of amusement.
Amelia whipped around and saw a hidden speaker, high on the wall.
The Chimera surged back in panic, the goat head bleating shrilly.
Amelia stroked the lion head, feeling the coarse fur bristle beneath her touch. “Are you scared?” she asked quietly.
The lion’s eyes just stared back at her, unblinking. She could see the fear in them.
“Well, Amelia, you’ve met our Chimera,” Celine’s voice continued. “She’s quite the beast, isn’t she?”
Before Amelia could respond, a blinding white light flooded the chamber, causing the Chimera to let out a terrified snarl before bolting down a side passage and disappearing into the maze.
Amelia shielded her eyes, blinking away spots.
Then, as the intense light gradually dimmed, Celine’s smug voice returned. “Let’s get you out of there, Amelia,” she said, her voice dripping with condescension. “I think it’s time you returned what’s mine. I would very much like my watch back now.”
