$20 Baking With The Beatles
1 reader
The genesis for Baking with the Beatles started on 10 Iles Place when I was a little girl fascinated by the magic of baking and the sound of the Beatles. There was always something transcendent about their music. It had the effect of lifting me up so I’d always feel better. I’ve been a super fan forever. I was diagnosed with MS in 1996. I live with the ups and downs of the disease and the maddening symptoms. I reached my twentieth year with MS in 2016. I had an exacerbation that was worse than I'd ever experienced before. For 18 months, I was on a hamster wheel with doctor visits, a plethora of medications, and medical tests. I had no energy. It felt like my life was slowly dripping out of me.
I began to feel better in early 2018. I shifted focus to concentrate on feeding my mind, body, and soul, physically and emotionally. My journey to wellness started with gathering and writing recipes down. The music of the Beatles and baking helped heal my body and spirit. Now, it's my turn to share something sweet that I hope will put a song in your heart too.

Cooking with My Nanas. Discovering Family, Traditions, and Love in the kitchen. Preview Book
Like so many others, the women of my family both formed and strengthened my family's foundation. Their resilience was born of the times in which they lived. From the end of the Civil War, Jim Crow, The Sinking of the Titanic, World War I, The Spanish Flu of 1918, The Great Depression, through World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and the Civil Rights Movement. They witnessed the presidencies of Benjamin Harrison to William Jefferson Clinton. Not to mention living during Queen Victoria's time and that of her great-granddaughter times three, Queen Elizabeth.
As women, they bore children through lean times with very few rights and even less money. Some worked in the fields and kitchens, while others worked in factories and did odd jobs to make ends meet. Their homes were clean, the children respectable, and the meals were so good, one could say they ate better than royalty on mere pennies.
While the recipes are to be treasured, it's the stories behind them that make them priceless. When a widow with seven children and one on the way during the Depression raises all eight with not one empty mouth. Then there's the farmer's wife, who makes the crops used for livestock as delicious as any vegetable dish in France. A grandmother who makes a jelly-roll cake as light as a Victoria Sponge. The aunt that cooks all day in a Manhattan apartment while her family waits for her almond cake to end the night on a sweet note. These are the women of my family, and it's because of them that I'm here. Therefore, this cookbook is more than just recipes, it's a blueprint for love and fortification found in each recipe. It has continued throughout generations and this is a small attempt to celebrate these incredible women. Besides making dishes for your family, I hope it inspires readers and cooks to visit their culinary history. I am sure they will find treasures to pass on through generations.

Whether you live to eat or eat to live, food is more than nutrition, it’s comfort. Whether it’s your grandmother’s spaghetti, your aunt’s potato salad, or your mother’s buttermilk biscuits. There’s something about it that comforts you. It reminds you of special people, and times in your life when everything felt perfect even if it wasn’t. You felt safe, happy and loved.
Cooking With My Nanas Discovering Family, Traditions, and Love in the Kitchen is a collection of recipes that shares the recipes of four generations of amazing women, from my paternal great grandmother’s island of St. Kitts to the small town of my maternal great grandmother and grandmother in South Carolina, stretching out through the continental United States, across the ocean to Europe, and Africa.
These women knew real hardship. They survived the end of slavery, colonialism, Jim Crow, The Spanish Flu, The Great Depression, World War I and II, racial injustice and violence, and so much more we can’t fathom today. Yet, they were there to be the backbone of the family, to lift spirits with wisdom and sustain bodies with meals that did more than feed their bodies, it was comfort for their family’s souls. It’s comfort we still rely on to this very day.
Their recipes and stories are shared to inform and inspire by going one step further to make room at the table for everyone, vegans, vegetarians, gluten-sensitivities, low and no sugar diets. The recipes that could be adapted are there, because as my grandmother used to say, just because you can do it, doesn’t mean you should, the bottom line is always how does it taste.
Ultimately, I hope the spirit of my grandmothers will inspire and edify others as they have me. I had the wisdom of their words to help me battle through cancer and in my fight with MS for the last twenty-five years. I hope readers will think about exploring their culinary heritage or returning to some of their favorite family recipes. It’s this commonality of family that I hope will bring us back to our humanity, kindness, and respect to face whatever the future holds for us as a nation, individuals all across the globe. Perhaps we can use the pan in pandemic to unite us.
