Drinking & Driving

Patrick Hipp

Bartending Cross-Country During Democracy's Last Call

I will be spending 45 days after the midterms on a road-trip, guest bartending at bars in 39 cities across 22,000 miles, getting the drunken truth about America. Part memoir, part guidebook, the book will get at the universal etiquette surrounding bars, while cataloguing the Great American landscape as seen from her roadways.

Synopsis

It's reference to a novel you've never read! It's also the whole kit and caboodle, which, when you discover that caboodle means "everything in the group," makes you wonder what the hell "kit" is doing in the phrase. ANYWAY, it's Drinking & Driving (the book and audiobook), All The World Is Lost, Prospect Falls, Black Horse, The So-So Gatsby, and We Are Monsters.

Nightlife has never really come back after COVID, not the way it was before lockdown. A whole generation of kids were delayed by two years of the joys of learning how to exist in bars and nightclubs, and they're not catching on very fast. Probably because they tend to drink less than their older siblings and aunts and uncles did when they were their age. So what does this mean for the industry? How do we get butts on stools? How is the industry coping on a national scale, with theme nights, board games, pinball, non-alcoholic cocktail programs?

That's partly what I'm setting out to discover. What unites us as an industry, what solutions there are out there on the road, hiding out in all of the dive bars that no single bartender has worked. Over 45 days, I will guest-bartended in 39 cities, learning what works where and why, while taking the political temperature of the nation during what we can only hope is its midlife crisis between the midterm elections and a new Congress being sworn in.

I've already chronicled my year pandemic bartending in "Werewolves Of Lockdown," which was published by Evergreen Review to some acclaim, and my non-fiction piece, "F*** You, I'm Not A Millennial," has been read by almost a million people between its appearances on Medium and HuffPost. I've published two novellas and am finishing the third novel in my "Occupational Trilogy," a series of books about working at a pawnshop, a CD store, and, finally, a bar.

Sales arguments

  • the rapidly changing nightlife industry is thirsty for answers to the post-COVID shifts in demographics and consumption, which have dropped to a low of 54% of reporting adults according to Gallup, and a 5% overall drop in Gen Z according to USC
  • 400+ subscribers across Medium and Substack, 186k reads on the former
  • scheduled and in-talks appearances on industry podcasts and TikTok channels
  • a nationwide personal social network of bartenders and fixers, both friends and acquaintances already at work to host me in their city
  • conversion of 2000 followers across traditional social media to TikTok and Substack

1106 Design, LLC

Dear Author,

You worked hard to write your manuscript, and you know that expert assistance is needed to ready it for the market. But perhaps you didn’t realize that working with a publisher is no longer necessary—especially publishers who charge fees to produce your book upfront and "share" more of your revenue whenever a book is sold.

1106 Design is an author services company that has served over 4,000 authors since 2001. We offer all the editorial and design services you’d expect from a publisher, transforming your manuscript into a polished book. But here's the difference: we help you secure print-on-demand printing and worldwide distribution in YOUR name. This means you'll earn several dollars more for every book sold instead of a meager “royalty” and never lose control of your book or your book files.

We understand that your book is not just a passion project but also a potential source of income. No two books or authors are alike. That's why we'll customize a package of services tailored to your needs at affordable prices, starting at $5,555. And here's the best part: after this one-time investment, every penny of revenue from book sales is deposited directly to your bank account, never to ours first.

If this sounds like a better way to publish your book, I invite you to browse our services, design samples, no-surprises pricing, outstanding customer reviews, and educational articles at https://1106design.com. You can download a free PDF of my book, "Publish Like the Pros: A Brief Guide to Quality Self-Publishing and an Insider's Look at a Misunderstood Industry," and request a free, no-obligation consultation.

1106 Design is rated A+ by the Better Business Bureau. We are a “Highly Recommended Expert” at IngramSpark.com and rated "Excellent" at Alli, The Alliance for Independent Authors, at SelfPublishingAdvice.org. Alli's "watchdog list" of the best and worst publishing services companies is an invaluable resource.

How can we serve you today?
