Synopsis

Following the emergence of a menacing dark presence that scourged the galaxy, Aurola, a low-level diplomat from Terra Secundus, embarks on a quest to find an elusive Neana sphere.

Under cryptic guidance of godlike Neana, her path leads to Samvedi, where she’s introduced to the mesmerizing practice of conscious creation known as “efflorescence” and meets Eidolon ‘Tis. Together, they board the Paradigm, where they are joined by the wayfinder O:Six, the easygoing plasma-based sentinel KILO, and the astute AnunA Inna. The Odyssean journey that takes them through seven rings of the Chams is closely accompanied by equally riveting one leading them inwards, all the way to the climactic unshrouding of truth that is as much personal as it is universal.

On a more personal level, Entropy is an homage to all the great sci-fi that captured and shaped my imagination while growing up. It was originally envisioned as a feel-good sci-fi book, a journey of self-reflection and self-discovery set in a future that manages to remain light and optimistic despite impending danger and seemingly insurmountable challenges. But above all, Entropy is a story about wonderment, and about striving to keep on wondering no matter how grown up we become.

THE WORLD

Entropy is set in a future scarred by the scourge—an era when advanced and mysterious entities crossed into the galaxy through the rift. After three years of silent oppression, the scourge were finally expunged and the rift collapsed, resulting in a tremendous discharge of energy that tore through the surrounding space, leaving Unison, once a glorious congregation of systems, ravaged and in ruins. What remains is still connected by an extensive network of ancient Veil portals built eons ago by the elusive Neana. Despite the lingering dread of the scourge’s potential return as well as a more tangible fear concerning the neighboring and ever-expanding ILK empire, run by species that exist in a state of virtual consciousness, there is a palpable rise of ease and optimism as life continues returning to normal.

THE BOOK

The good news is, Entropy is already fully written. More than a third of it has been professionally edited and is available as a sample read. All it needs now is a slight push in order to get the rest of editing and formatting done so we can get the first edition out (hopefully, no later than September).

THE REWARDS

Seeing as how the inspiration to start working on Entropy came in the solitude of my workshop, it seemed fitting to make all the rewards myself at the place where it all began.

Sales arguments

  • The world of feel-good sci-fi, although witnessing considerable momentum and a rise in popularity, is still a somewhat unexplored genre. The scarcity of feel-good sci-fi books was one of the motivators to begin working on Entropy, which will hopefully, at least in some small part, manage to contribute in filling that void.
  • While doing its best not to lean on nostalgia too heavily, the world of Entropy will still bring the warmth of familiarity to all who are in love with great sci-fi books, movies, and TV shows.
  • Despite being shrouded in a futuristic veneer, the topics Entropy explores, such as the warmth of connection and belonging, pain and joy on the path of self-discovery, the quest for purpose, and the resilience of the human spirit, are timeless and universal and, as such, might appeal to a wider audience.

Similar titles

  • Becky Chambers – The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet, Self-published/Hodder & Stoughton Publishing, 2014 ; Probably one of the cornerstones of the feel-good sci-fi genre and one of the books that kindled my need for self-expression. Although the books are set in quite different worlds, the most notable similarity would be a shared representation of a future that, despite occasional bleakness, manages to remain lighthearted and optimistic.
  • Arkady Martin – A Memory Called Empire, Tor Books, 2019 ; Perhaps a bit darker take, but it’s one that manages to dazzle due to its worldbuilding, witty dialogue, and beautifully developed characters. As challenging as it is to make a comparison to a book as polished as this one, the relaxed dialogues, as well as instances of palpable sexual tension, would probably be the overlapping points.
  • Odyssey – Homer, c. 8th century BC ; An ode to the timeless perseverance of the human spirit. A heroic quest that has inspired human imaginations for centuries and had also served as a basis for the testing and at time mind bending journey that marks the second section of the Entropy.

Audience

Entropy is primarily targeted at all the connoisseurs of the sci-fi genre, but due to its contemporary topics, it might make for an enticing and enthralling read for a wider audience.

About the author

The villainous part of me wants to get a volcanic island. The altruistic part wants to turn it into an art colony. I’m pretty much doing my best to find beauty and joy in seemingly meaningless things. In between teeth brushing and getting my weekly ration of cereal, I tend to spend a considerable portion of my time observing silence and listening to all the stories it has to tell. It might sound like birdwatching (and on occasion, it might include that too), but most of the time, it’s simply doing my best to notice and respect the natural flow of life.

Dear Author,

You worked hard to write your manuscript, and you know that expert assistance is needed to ready it for the market. But perhaps you didn’t realize that working with a publisher is no longer necessary—especially publishers who charge fees to produce your book upfront and "share" more of your revenue whenever a book is sold.

That's why we'll customize a package of services tailored to your needs at affordable prices, starting at $5,555. Chapter 7 – Blossom

Leaning to the west side of L’a’ was a lake. In the middle, three huge spherical monoliths floated just above the water, each one slightly tilted at a different angle. Their polished surface reflected the rose gold lake beneath them. From afar, it looked like part of the lake had decided to take form and dance above itself.

They exited the ovum on a hillside just above the lake. Aurola heard faint music and glanced around. Her gaze landed on a woman farther up the hill. Her skin was bare, with only two beige strips wrapped around her figure, one covering her breasts and another her nether regions.

The woman swayed and oscillated in the most sensuous way. Her liquid movements closely followed the music’s smooth, organic tones. Hundreds of tiny strings falling from her head shifted and bounced, occasionally revealing freckles on the sides of her neck. On the ground in front of her was a metal pad, similar to the one the architects had.

“Is she, too, efflorescing?” Aurola asked, without taking her eyes off the bending form.

“She is. ‘Xil is extraordinarily talented in matter-shifting,” ‘Sel replied.

Above the pad in front of the woman floated a piece of hard stone; it morphed and reshaped in harmony with her movements.

“A sculptor?” Aurola asked.

“I guess you could say that.”

Aurola gaped for a few more moments. “It’s a bit of a relief to see that you don’t have to be a Perulian tier-five meditator to effloresce.”

“Most Perulian tier-five meditators would, in a few µcys, just get too horny to do any actual efflorescing.”

Aurola burst into laughter. ‘Sel kept her composure.

“You aren’t kidding?” she asked.

“We have visitors arriving here from all over the galaxy,” ‘Sel replied casually.

Aurola’s smile took a naughty shift.

“Sitting down still and silent, while necessary for some types of efflorescence, gets a bit tedious over time, so eventually we managed to adapt the process to better reflect and suit our individual affinities,” ‘Sel responded, her gaze returning to ‘Xil’s bending sensuousness.

“Yes, I’ve noticed that,” Aurola countered with a cheeky smile. She wasn’t only thinking of the twisting form in front of her but the numerous displays of affection she’d noticed around her in which actors apparently utilized their intimacy as a means of efflorescing.

Most of the time, Aurola slid her gaze away from them onto some architectural feature, recounting in her mind everything she knew about Samvedi society and history – pretty much any entertaining fun fact that would help her mind ignore the prevailing and penetrating aura of sensuality surrounding her.

Noticing her persistent blush, ‘Sel smirked.

“No. I’m not judging. It’s just . . .” Aurola countered somewhat defensively.

“It’s just slightly more than you expected,” ‘Sel finished. “There is an old saying: Coming to Samvedi without enjoying the merging is like not coming to Samvedi at all.” Her tone sent warm shivers through Aurola’s body.

***

As they approached the lake, Aurola’s gaze landed on a small, wrinkled tree on its banks.

“The Hominine tree.” ‘Sel’s voice came from behind her.

Two boys and a girl were sitting around a small crystalline pylon that was peeking from the ground next to the tree. It seemed to emit a hazy hue that alternated between pale blue and rose red.

The children stood up.

“We were just finishing,” the boy said.

“And I thought you were just starting,” ‘Sel replied.

“When a time spiral is observed in a two-dimensional plane, it could be said that one equals another,” the small girl said chuckling.

‘Sel flashed an approving smile. “Off you go.”

Pebble cushions were still expanded, so Aurola and ‘Sel took a seat on opposite sides of the pylon.

“It isn’t lit anymore,” Aurola said.

“It lights up only in response to a conscious interaction.” ‘Sel closed her eyes and placed her hand on the pylon, which began emanating a strong white glow. As she removed her hand, it dimmed again.

“The rootstones are made out of a specially refined mineral found in our asteroid field,” ‘Sel said.

Aurola wondered if it was the same one Neana used in the construction of the Veils.

“They help direct the mind but can also temporarily hold individuals’ emotional burdens. We use them for training when young or as a means to refocus when our balance gets a bit off.”

Aurola tried to listen attentively, but her gaze kept slipping toward the tree. For some reason, it looked out of place.

“When our most accomplished propagators sense the time of their reintegration with the Void is nearing, they choose a specific spot where the rootstone is placed. They start spending more and more time next to it, just letting the consciousness flow through them. This makes the space around it vibrant with grounded focus. Once they return to the Void, their empty shell is laid next to the rootstone and effloresced by the council of senior propagators into a Hominine tree sapling.”

“I thought efflorescing meant creating something new,” Aurola interjected.

“Creating something new always entails transmutation of something already in existence,” ‘Sel said.

Aurola wanted to rebut but stopped herself. As much as ‘Sel’s sentiment seemed counterintuitive, she had trouble finding an example that would disprove it. Instead, she turned her focus back to the tree.

“Somehow, it feels familiar,” Aurola mused.

“In a way, it should,” ‘Sel replied. “It is an approximation of a Bodhi tree, found in ancient Terran folklore. Its originator was the first Terran ambassador. After his term ended, he decided to stay on Samvedi to practice and study efflorescence. He propagated and named the first tree more than two thousand arcs ago. Later, the rite became popular and took off.”

“Does the original one still exist?” Aurola queried.

‘Sel turned her head toward the tree next to them.

Aurola felt the stream of curiosity slowly but steadily swelling.

“What does one do with it?” she asked, gazing at the rootstone.

“One can start by closing their eyes,” ‘Sel said and took a deep, long breath.

As her eyes closed, Aurola almost instinctively moved her hand towards the stone. ‘Sel’s hand gently landed on top of hers.

There was a slight discomfort, similar to what she’d felt just before going through the Veil. Out of the darkness emerged a colourful glowing blossom. Colours seemed to overflow from the blossom onto Aurola, sating some part of her that felt depleted.

A sensation coursed through her body, moving most delicately from her forehead all the way to her feet. She gasped as it crossed her chest.

Breathe.

She heard a gentle voice and pre-emptively silenced her mind’s inquisition with a hard, long inhale and even longer exhale. It felt like she was trying to breathe through water, hard and heavy, but she persisted until the colours seemed to become more vibrant, dispersing into soothing blackness and reappearing.

Again, the voice insisted. And she did, again and again until she lost count and all breaths seemed to merge into one.

Wake up, the voice whispered.

She slowly opened her eyes.

The sun was dim, just over the horizon. It had an amberlike glow as it was setting behind ‘Sel. She looked like those saintly depictions of the Guides encircled with glowing auras, handed out by outer-rim cults.

“How long have we . . . ?” Aurola paused, feeling disoriented.

“Shy of three cys,” ‘Sel replied, staring at Aurola attentively.

After slowly tilting her head a few times in childlike amazement, Aurola concluded, “I’m hungry.” Her words evoked a most sincere laugh from ‘Sel.

While returning to the ovum, Aurola once more turned her gaze towards the tree. It was illuminated by a hazy sunset. There was a melancholic feel about it.

“Thank you,” she whispered as the ovum’s shell closed.
