After a successful coaching career Michael Plansky left coaching to take care of his son with cerebral palsy. What he created was not only a non-profit organization, but an inclusion model that changed the disability space.

You’re With Us! is a non-profit organization with service providers that creates inclusion opportunities for young adults with disabilities. The program identifies and trains college clubs, groups, and teams to welcome individuals with disabilities into their groups as they are.

Synopsis

January 3, 2000 Michael was readying his team for practice. Minutes before they were to start, he found out his son Max had been diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. Max was nine months old and Michael was five months into his head coaching career. Standing before a group of fit and able-bodied young men, he started his usual practice warm-up address. But that day was different... As he began, he informed his team of Max’s diagnosis. And Michael began to cry. Many players began to tear up with him.

Max became an inspiration to Michael’s team for the next six years. The players viewed Max as their teammate. When Michael left coaching – and for the eight years that followed –Max had no opportunities to be included in groups of able-bodied people. He withdrew and his physical condition worsened. That changed in 2013 when Max was welcomed onto the Northeastern University’s men’s basketball team. A new group of players welcomed him as their teammate. Michael had his son back. His life changed – and so did theirs.

Social isolation affects all mentally and physically in a negative way. Social connections are a basic human need. All wellness plans include having positive physical social connections in their best practices. How do young adults with disabilities become socially connected with typical peers?

This book is the story of Michael and Max, but there are thousands of stories to be told to boost the importance of social inclusion and social connections.
