About the author

Joseph E. Holeman is a multimedia artist and awesome dad living in Berkeley, California. From illustrations to photography, music and design, Joseph enjoys to bounce from all aspects of visual media.

Being raised by a mother with schizophrenia, took Joseph into a often dark and fantasy world. Where he later in life was able to channel creatively. Working on children's book as always seemed a good fit for his style. The artwork can be strange or dark but very child like in it's approach.

From Joseph's upbringing led to his desire to create art that could be felt. That the viewer could take something away from it. Possibly even find healing in the imagery. Not always a defined message but something abstract that could be interpreted by the viewer. The silhouettes show this with not defining ethnicity or age. Anyone can find a character to identify with.

Synopsis

For about fifteen years I've been drawing these silhouette illustrations of people on a journey and usually in the forest. I've always thought it would make a great children's book. Finally, I figured out how I wanted to present it.

The drawings come first with out much thought or planning. I try to channel my subconscious and just let the drawings flow out of me. Usually showing what emotions I'm feeling at that moment. Then after sitting on the drawings, I'll reflect on what meaning I find and write a short, simple rhyme to accompany it.

Outline

Each page spread is a unique character with their own story to
tell. The characters are shown as silhouettes let anyone relate to them and hopefully let's the viewer interpret their own meaning as well. The illustrations are
accompanied by short "Dr. Seuss" like rhymes.

Some of the stories are dark and some playful. I've always believed that children
should be encouraged to face somewhat scary things and this book is
meant to be a playful way to do so. Hopefully, they find some of the
messages and illustrations inspiring as well.

Audience

The audience for this is targeted first to children of ages 5-10. But much like Pixar movies, the stories and imagery are meant to be felt by people of all ages. As a father, Joseph knows the good and bad sides to children's books. The stories should be engaging for all members to enjoy!

Promotion

This book will be marketed on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Blurb, and a regular update on new artwork and deals. I've also created a book trailer here:

(Introduction Page)

Come into the Shadows,
Let’s see where it goes,
Meet the brave and bold,
Some young and some old.

(One interior page example)

Theodor loves talking to trees,
Because it makes him feel at ease,
Patiently listening closely,
The tree starts speaking slowly.
