Love, By Any Name is a memoir that follows the 30-year love story between a cis bi minister, her trans husband and their nonbinary adult child. But it is also about the larger family and community that grew with them, finding new meaning in spite of the dual tensions of political and religious dogmas.
Friends, on this Trans Day of Visibility, we live in a world that feels pretty oppressive to queer and trans folk. Just yesterday, the American Medical Association had to, again, refute the New York Times misrepresentation of their position; they continue to stand by the science supporting gender-affirming care. A couple of days ago the Olympic Committee barred trans women from participating in the games, in spite of recent scientific confirmation that after 1-3 years on hormone replacement therapy there is no advantage for trans women athletes over cis gender women athletes. And today, in an 8-1 ruling, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of conversion therapy, when the science (as well as most faith communities) have condemned these harmful practices (thank you to Justice Ketanji Brown for dissenting).
The Liberation of Passover and the Renewal of Easter (both this week) are more necessary than ever, to bring new hope to us all. To add to the voice of hope and resilience, I am thrilled to share that I have chosen which publisher I will be working with, to bring Love, By Any Name into the world. Final details have yet to be worked out, so the formal announcement will come in the next week or so. But in the meantime, know that just as the Pharaohs of old were overthrown, so too will this modern period of oppression give way to kindness and compassion. Happy Holidays.
