Synopsis

Based on the real-life events that triggered the greatest mass extinction in modern history – the end of the passenger pigeon – “Martha” takes budding readers on a grand adventure through a magical world complete with mystic owls, tom-fooling mice and a little straw-haired boy who protects the last living passenger pigeon on the planet from the evil Patsy Brothers. The mid-grade chapter book, by internationally acclaimed travel writer Greg Benchwick, is a great way to help children explore conservation, environmentalism and history.

It is also a precautionary tale for young readers and adults alike. We are currently going through Planet Earth's sixth mass extinction. This disaster of our own making is literally wiping out dozens of species every day, and many scientists say that by the middle of the century, 30 to 50 percent of our planet's species could go extinct.

As the book's prologue points out: "We all know that animals can't talk. But if they could, would we listen?"

And so the story begins. Born with a bum leg, Martha is pushed out of her nest just minutes after her birth. It’s all part of the Seven Cycles of Nature, the guiding force that connects the Animal Kingdoms. But since the arrival of the Iron Horse, the Seven Cycles of Nature have been disrupted and the Great Owls know they need to do something to restore balance to their world. They decide to save Martha. Little do they know that Martha may one day, in her small way, save humanity.

In the real world, Martha was born in captivity in the Cincinnati Zoo in 1895. She died in 1914. She was the last of her breed. Once the most abundant bird species in the world – numbering in the billions – the passenger pigeon was no more.

Advance praise

"Martha is a remarkable tale set against a vibrant historic backdrop. The story masterfully weaves together true historic elements and parables on conservation and environmentalism in a magical world that young readers will love exploring. Truly a must read for children and adults alike, this book is a wake up call. If we don't act now, we risk losing close to half of our global biodiversity by 2050. Our planet is in crisis. In the tradition of Dr. Seuss's 'The Lorax,' this new book by Greg Benchwick should be taught the world over. We can only hope it's not too late." - Alan Miller, RT World Bank Principal Climate Change Specialist and globally recognized expert on environmentalism, climate change and conservation

"Greg has done some amazing things with 'Martha' - he's entered a child's mind, and taken them back over a century, while speaking to them in the vocabulary of birds! This is the voice of experience channeled through the innocence of youth, passing on a crucial message to the next generation. As avian and many other species stand on the brink of extinction, this book should be in every school."
Brian Kluepfel, children's author and editor at the Audubon Society.

Atmosphere Press

Atmosphere Press is an independent full-service publisher for books in genres ranging from non-fiction to fiction to poetry to children's picturebooks, with a special emphasis on being an author-friendly approach to getting a book into the world. We're professional, honest, and kind.

Here’s what we stand for:

Honesty: because our mission is to be author-friendly, that means always giving honest advice about the ins and outs of the authorial life. We are dedicated to sticking by one of our founding precepts: “if I were the author, what would I want to know?”

Transparency: publishing is rife with dodgy behavior, from predatory vanity presses who promise the moon to traditional presses who make book changes without the author’s permission. We’re dedicated to letting you see the wizard behind the curtain, so you can rest easy that everything’s on the up and up.

Professionalism: with decades of combined years of writing, editing, designing, and publishing experience, our staff knows the ins and outs of the industry, and will be responsive and helpful. And of course, we will only publish books that truly contribute something wonderful to the world.

Kindness: as an author-friendly press, we take the word “friendly” seriously. A good publisher shouldn’t be just a business partner, but should be full of people you’d want to invite to dinner. Whether it be making a good joke or allaying your worries about being an author, kindness is our hallmark.

Making Your Book Awesome: we really can’t settle for anything less. We want our authors and their readers to be blown away when they first hold that book in their hands. It needs to look good inside and out, and feel good to the touch. And, of course, the words need to be top-notch, and our editors are devoted to making that the case.
