Synopsis

Some historical references suggest bulimia and eating disorders, have been plaguing  people since before we understood them. Ancient Egyptians have been described as purging themselves every monthfor three days in succession, believing that human diseases came from food.  

1.5% of American women and 0.5%  men suffer from bulimia in their lifetime. That is approximate 4.7 million females and 1.5 million males who will have their lives threatened by this potentially deadly disordered eating.

Hearing that Bulimia is not curable from a South African psychiatrist I woke up from my 6 years of denial and delusion.  I had to cure myself if I wanted to live. There were many close calls  of carnal damage if I didn't throw up  the 3 or so kilos of food mixed with liquid stuck in my stomach. The panic attacks  of suffocating when my oesophagus was closing up due to the swelling after I accidentally scraped it with my knuckles on the hand in desperate attempt to throw up  15,000 calories of food. I felt possessed during these rituals. The shame and embarrassment of not being in control was visible on my right-hand knuckles which had constant bruises and cuts from the teeth digging during purging.  I remember feeling ashamed seeing my boyfriend's face checking my hand to see how recent the purge occurred by the visible red teeth marks on my scraped skin of the knuckles.... my life was self imposed  hell
