Writing is such an odd process. Despite knowing that the words you are putting onto a page are purely for the consumption of others, somehow you find yourself committing the most personal and private thoughts, feelings and emotions to this immortal record, more permanent than any facebook post or email.
This is why editing someone's writing is such a delicate art. You are not manipulating grammar and phrasing but conducting the memories and impressions of each author into a wonderful narrative.
Unfortunately knowing the talent and ability of the editor doesn't make it any easier as an author to be edited! It is not logical but I find myself clinging to a particular phrase or form of words - it suddenly becomes important that a thought or emotion is expressed in exactly this way or that.
I am familiar with the danger of projects that become our 'children', that we care about too much to be able to see the wider perspective. But knowing that danger doesn't make it any easier to avoid.
We are currently going through the frequently painful process of having our manuscript edited into a far stronger, clearer, more polished piece of work. You will, I am sure, be delighted with the result but we ask for your patience as we take our time! We want to get it right!
Thanks so much to Kevin, who is showing such care and understanding in shepherding our words!
With best wishes,
Felicity and the team
