Sarah MacLaughlin is a licensed social worker, parent educator, and author of the award-winning, bestselling book, What Not to Say: Tools for Talking with Young Children (Bay Island Books, 2010). She wrote the Parenting Toolbox column at Parent & Family for 8 years and has been featured on HuffPost and many online outlets.
Sarah is obsessed with brain science and child development, and is passionate about advocating for kids and the adults who care for them. When moms and dads are supported and understand themselves and their children, everyone has more fun.
Sarah has worked with children, youth, and parents for over 20 years and has extensive experience with blended, foster, and adoptive families. She has presented many professional development workshops and conference sessions for educators and social workers. Sarah helps caregivers and parents see the bigger picture. She knows that grown-ups crave a deeper understanding with regard to brains, behavior, and caring for children in a developmentally appropriate way.
Sarah lives in the woods of Maine with her husband and son; a tweenager who gives her plenty of opportunities to take her own advice.

Not a How-To Manual
Here's the good & the bad news: our kids are always watching us. Let's focus on what’s important: who WE are and how that affects our relationships with children.

Becoming a parent is a seismic shift. For most, that sparkling newborn rocks your world with their smooth skin and fuzzy head you just can’t stop sniffing. But as soon as you get the hang of caring for them, they change! Soon enough they are three-years-old and screaming in what seems like ACTUAL pain that they have to wear clothing (the nerve!). Then comes the hard eye rolls and sarcasm in 4th grade. And eventually a teenager who can outright refuse to do something. What then?
Alternating yelling and ignoring gets you nowhere and the authoritarian approach isn’t working. You know what NOT to do, but what TO do?
This book brings what’s important into focus: who you are as a person and parent, and how that affects your relationships with children. What if self-awareness and personal development were the ways to improve your family life? It is possible that building emotional intelligence and self-regulation skills will create a more peaceful home. Maybe we need to move beyond self-care into self-advocacy! And sometimes a reminder about child development or a tip about communication will shift the dynamic and help you get out of your own way. When we get out of our heads and into OUR hearts, it becomes clear how to best interact with children: with love and compassion. Our intentions and behavior towards our children can help them grow up with heart; the big hearts that the world needs right now.
Why someone would buy this book:
Parents right now are Generation X and Millennials. They have computers in their pockets, are overwhelmed by too much information, and may be discouraged by lengthy volumes. Research tells us that parents don’t want to repeat the playbook from their own childhoods; they know top-down authoritarianism isn’t best. They want to get along with their kids and enjoy family life, but aren’t sure what parenting style or discipline approach to use. This books offers a 10,000 foot view, wide context, and perspective-shifting resources to help parents enjoy their kids more.
This accessible book illustrates that "good parenting" is all about staying true to your heart and keeping your sense of humor while continuing to show up for daily challenges.
Grandparents, teachers, nannies, and others who care for children will also be inspired to think about their time spent with young people in a new way.
Sarah is author of What Not to Say: Tools for Talking with Young Children (Bay Island Books, 2010), an Amazon bestseller and winner of the Silver Medal in the "Family" category of the 2011 Independent Publisher Living Now Book Awards.
Midwest Book Review: “What Not to Say: Tools for Talking with Young Children” is a practical guide for communicating with children. Parents will find the mindful interaction style of intergenerational communication a very helpful model. Dealing with children ages 1–6 can be very challenging and stressful, but there are also rewards for the patient, sensitive, experimental, and determined parent. “What Not to Say” is also laced with humor, an invaluable asset. Topics covered include why wrong things are said, changing language to make it work, use of labels and nicknames, threats or bribes, handling emotions, the inner critic, conveying clear messages about our bodies, and avoiding the temptation to make contests over control issues. All information is conveyed in a clear, non-judgmental style, and refreshing hints of lack of perfection abound. Parents and teachers and child caregivers will hail “What Not to Say: Tools for Talking with Young Children” as a great resource and fount of ideas for good communicating skills with children.
Praise:
“An excellent book that is as reflective as it is instructional. It empowers caregivers to improve communication with children.”
—Stephen J. Bavolek, PhD, principal author of the Nurturing Parenting Programs
“The way adults talk with young children defines how well we are
understanding them and getting them to understand us. This book is like a
flashlight: it helps you see just how your words sound to a child, and
shows you ways to say things better.”
—Martha Sears, co-author with Dr. Bill Sears of The Baby Book, The Discipline Book, and others in the Sears Parenting Library
“Sarah MacLaughlin explains how to speak respectfully to children
while setting clear limits; how to respond to what they really need from
us in ways that leave us feeling good about ourselves as parents and
teachers.”
—Jane Katch, MST, author of They Don’t Like Me and
Under Deadman’s Skin; preschool teacher and authority on child
development and early childhood education.

The Gift of a Happy Mother Letting Go of Perfection and Embracing Everyday Joy, by Rebecca Eanes: TarcherPerigee, 2019
A guide focused on mothers and self-care with 19 chapters that discuss challenges to happiness and strategies for overcoming them. Sarah’s book, while also focused on bringing more happiness to parents’ lives, is a quicker read, provides a large and broad context, explores internal roadblocks, and offers easy-to-implement ideas and mindset shifts for how to overcome them.
How to Be a Happier Parent: Raising a Family, Having a Life, and Loving (Almost) Every Minute, by KJ Dell’Antonia: Avery (Penguin Random House), 2018
This book focuses on nine pain points for parents and offers steps for improvement and change. It aims to help parents become more joy-seeking throughout their days and years as parents. Sarah's book will also focus on bringing more joy to parents' lives, but isn't about particular pain points. Rather, it offers broad context, explores internal roadblocks we may encounter along the way (emotional upsets and brain biases), and how to overcome them.
Joyful Courage: Calming the Drama and Taking Control of Your Parenting Journey, by Casey O'Roarty, M. ED: Alignment Publications, 2019
This book stems from Casey's experience as a mom, parent coach, podcaster, and Positive Discipline trainer. She focuses on helping parents understand and tame their emotional reactivity with self-awareness and self-regulation. Raising Humans With Heart will include a chapter on parents' emotional reactivity, but isn't about a Positive Discipline approach. It will provide a broad context around two-generations and what we bring to parenting form the get-go. Sarah will also bring in perspectives from her background, including her experiences as a mom, teacher, and coach, as well as her work with foster and adoptive families and as a certified Hand in Hand Parenting instructor.
Peaceful Parent, Happy Kids: How to Stop Yelling and Start Connecting, by Dr. Laura Markham: Perigee (Penguin Group) 2012
Based on Dr. Laura’s website Aha parenting!, this book is a guide to raising responsible, capable, happy kids. It's based on brain development and Dr. Laura's extensive clinical experience with parents. It states that with a strong emotional connection with children, you don’t need to threaten, nag, plead, bribe, or punish. Sarah’s book covers some of the same ground as far as raising emotionally intelligent humans and seeing a parent’s connection with their children as their greatest asset. Sarah’s book is not clinical and includes some vignettes from her coaching work.
The publishers will be visible after the campaign has ended.
