My Story:
It wasn’t long into my 33-year marriage that I became frustrated and fearful regarding the future of my relationship with my husband and our three sons. My dreams were shattered when I realized I was married to a chronic alcoholic who had been secretly drinking to manage his anxiety since the age of twelve.
After seventeen years of marriage and three children I felt stuck. From my perspective, I had two choices: to stay married and suffer the fears associated with my husbands drinking or leave and suffer the fears I had of the judgments of others and figuring out how to take care of my children and myself without a career to fall back on.
Many times I felt lonely without the companionship and fellowship of a healthy partner. I deeply loved my husband and wanted my marriage to work out. I came from a childhood of multiple failed relationships and I didn’t want my children to suffer the losses I had as a child. I longed for a husband who I could lean upon who would comfort me when my own fears surfaced. Instead I felt the need to protect my husband so he wouldn’t feel the stress or anxiety that typically drove him to self-medicate. I felt burdened with the responsibility of keeping our home-life running smoothly and keeping our children from experiencing the impact of a binge drinker.
My life vacillated between chaos and relief; expecting, but never really knowing when the next shoe would drop. And then it would hit, and I would go into triage mode, managing the chaos and protecting my children.
It was during those challenging years I choose to learn everything I could about human behavior, emotional healing, and Spiritual enlightenment to gain the skills necessary to not only survive an unhappy marriage, but to thrive in it as well.
For sixteen more years my wounded husband became my greatest teacher. I experienced unprecedented growth in every area of my life! I became more loving, patient, compassionate, and peaceful as a result of diving into personal development. The last three years were by far the most difficult for me. I now believe I simply stayed longer than the “lessons” I was there to learn. Had I followed my heart and Spirit, I would have left in peace. But, I chose to stay because I was still a slave to my fears.
Being in a relationship with a chronic addict has many challenges that others don’t experience. As a result of the tools I had developed over the years, I was able to remain loving, and happy for the last sixteen years despite the choices my husband was making. It wasn’t until the last year of my marriage, when the pain of staying became so much bigger than the fear of leaving, that I finally chose to follow my heart and my intuition into the unknown, the unfamiliar, and the possibility of something beautiful.
I am not suggesting that anyone who is struggling in their relationship should leave. On the contrary, with the exception of physical or emotional abuse, I believe that the revolutionary tools I have developed will have a significant impact for transforming a relationship from broken to beautiful, and from hurtful to happy.
At the very least, these tools transformed me into the happy, peaceful, compassionate, loving woman I am today and have equipped me to have the romantic relationship of my dreams!
According to major studies, the divorce rate is around 50 percent of first marriages, and over 70 percent of second and third marriages fail.

You and I have heard story, after story, after story about failed relationships, unfulfilled relationships, and even downright miserable relationships. According to www.divorcestatistic.org, currently, the divorce rate is around 50 percent of first marriages and 60 – 73 percent of second and third marriages. Keep in mind that the failed marriage statistics don’t include all of the failed relationships, which were never legally recorded. These statistics also doesn’t include all of the couples who are still together but miserable. I'm sure you know many couples who fall into either or both of those camps. But aren’t those failed relationships as well? Based on these unaccounted for relationships, I assert that the “failed relationship statistic” is much higher than the reported divorce statistics, which are already seriously bleak figures!
According to Attorneys.com, "When society changes, divorce changes." Three major factors over the past half century that have contributed to the current divorce rate are: 1. The "No-fault" divorce law implemented in the 1970's. Men and women no longer needed to prove abuse or infidelity to leave an unhappy marriage. 2. Woman becoming a strong force in the workplace, creating independence and financial freedom to choose to leave a miserable marriage. 3. Social acceptance. Without the guilt and shame of being divorced people are more likely to divorce. "In short, many couples that would have previously remained married now chose divorce." — Attorneys.com
These failed relationships are rising every decade, not because we are getting worse at marriage or relationships, rather because divorce and cohabitation are more accepted, and being happy in a relationship is the new standard. As we drop our judgments on divorce, people will have more freedom to leave a relationship that is painful and unfulfilling. However, they still won’t know what they did to contribute to the breakdown of their relationship or how to have better results the next time around.
It’s surprising that people continue to get married given these dismal statistics. I guess it’s just part of our human nature—the disbelief that what happens to the majority of people will happen to us. Or, we think we are going to do “it” differently, but most of us don’t! Why don’t we? I believe it’s because we have never taken a close look at what “it” is that isn’t working in these committed intimate relationships.
I wanted to know why. What are we doing or not doing that is causing so much unhappiness in these close intimate relationships? How do two people start out happy and hopeful, merge their lives together, make commitments to Love each other for the rest of their lives, and then it all goes to hell?
Doing the same things in our intimate relationships over and over again, generation after generation, hoping for different results is insane! Obviously, something isn’t working! After many years of research, personal experience, and coaching clients, I believe I have some insight to these questions.
My lover, Joe, has been my “experiment” for this material. My approach with Joe has actually changed the heart of a wounded skeptic into a rather eager, hopeful believer in a Real Passion Revolution, for us, and for those who join us on this journey. We hope Our work will bring healing to struggling relationships as well as prevent new relationships from ever experiencing the destructive effects of the status quo. Our desire is to establish the conditions for true Love, and produce a Real Passion Revolution around the world!
The focus of this book is to support your healing, My Friend, as well as the healing of your partner. The result will be empowering, fulfilling, safe, authentic, loving, passionate relationships.
The definition of “Healing,” as I am using it in this book, is to cause a shift in perspective from one of pain to power, from oppression to opportunity, from turmoil to tranquility, from victim to victor, from fear to Love! I am NOT advocating denial of any fear, pain, or anger you are experiencing. I am promoting a practice which will bring light and healing to your suffering. This healing, or shift in perspective, is accomplished with the guidance of your Inner Wisdom.
Sacred writings teach that when our thoughts are aligned with truth, we will experience freedom. How do we know if we believe a lie or the truth? By our sense of anxiety, fear, and despair or peace, joy, and freedom.
Chew on that for a bit and then file it away for later when I teach you how this concept works. For now, all I’m asking is that you stay open to the possibility that what I am sharing with you is true. From my own experience, there is a clear path from suffering to healing and freedom by understanding the application of truth!
The best way to get to any goal is to be very clear about where you are currently. If you want to take a trip to Florida, you need to know where you are starting the journey from. The route will be entirely different if you are starting off in Maine or California. Below is an exercise to help you get clear about your current reality, what’s missing for you, and where it is exactly you want to go.
FAN THE FLAME
RELATIONSHIP ASSESSMENT:
Be specific. Example: Describe what an ideal relationship would look like for you. “I want to be able to have any conversation with my partner without him getting upset and shutting down.” Describe what being happy looks like for you. “I would be happy if I felt confident and secure.” The more time and details you give to this process, the more likely you are to achieve them.
What are the longings you have for an intimate relationship? (safe, passionate, compassionate, supportive, etc.)
What is your greatest fear regarding your intimate relationship?
What is the current reality of your intimate relationship? (passionate, fighting, passive, lonely, connected, distant, etc.)
How is this current reality impacting your life? (health, happiness, business, etc.)
How is this reality affecting those around you? (What are your friends and family missing out on with you as a result of your current reality? How does your relationship inspire others?)
As you consider these results, what are you feeling? (happy, hopeless, frustrated, content, disappointed, etc.)
How did you get to this place in your relationship? (Be specific. Work became more important, I was afraid to tell my partner how I was feeling, I started nagging/complaining to feel heard and get my needs met, We made a commitment to spend quality time together, etc.)
If nothing changes, where do you see yourself in a year? In five years? (peaceful, stressed, content, miserable, divorced, married, etc.)
When these issues are resolved, and you are experiencing what you have been longing for, what difference will that make in your life? How will you feel then? (happy, fulfilled, peaceful, etc.)
Review your answers to question #1. Do your actions align with your desires? In other words, are you giving to your lover what you long for yourself? If not, make a list of those longings that you need to sow into your relationship. Example: If you long for a relationship where you can be authentic without any judgments, do you allow your partner to be completely authentic? Do you try to change your lover? Do you have any judgments about your partner?
It is critical that you model for your partner, or give to your lover, that which you long for, regardless of their behaviors. You must be clear about what it is you are committed to cause in your relationship in order to line up your actions with your commitment. I run all of my conversations and responses through the filter of what I am committed to have in all of my relationships—especially in my romantic relationship. I have found, without fail, that whatever has been lacking in my relationships is only what I have not given, or not given consistently in the relationship.
Stay alert and diligent, My Friend! Sow only Love into your relationships, and you will reap Love in abundance in return.
