Synopsis

"Reverse Graffiti" is an provocative collection of personally & socially relevant prose & poetry sourced from the full spectrum of the human experience.

In short, it is about the journey we are traveling home to ourselves.
The book is a collection of passages, both literally and figuratively, where each stand alone piece is whole unto itself, offering short and digestible explorations into the spiritual path and it's impact on us both individually and collectively.

In each writing the author explores a rite of passage we each must travel as wayfarers of our own personal journey into the sovereignty of our soul. One that implores that we lean into our shadows as an initiation into fully and authentically owning our light and the impact this process has on the most prevalent cultural issues of the times we are living in.

These come in a variety of forms from pieces that are introspective and can be used as meditations to others that tackle the most pressing social and political issues of the current cultural climate. The audio version of the book includes both spoken word poetry as well as guided meditations. Ultimately, what is being demonstrated is that activism and spirituality are intimately wedded. As we delve into the roots of our own personal essence through the spiritual path, we come to a shared root.

This profound recognition of our interconnectedness as a realized experience compels us to transform our relationship not only to the world within us, but to the world around us. Our outreach can only be as effective as the degree to which we've reached inward. Spoken & written poetry are culturally relevant expressions of a movement that gives rise to the insights born through deep, internal investigation. This book seeks to elucidate this understanding not only conceptually but through the direct experience of reading or hearing the transmission of the passages themselves.

Within the pages of this book, one will not uncover a linear process to follow in an attempt to overcome our human conditioning. After 20 years of teaching meditation and psycho-spiritual inquiry coupled with conscious activism, Scott's experience has yielded the opposite insights: Namely that the spiritual path is decidedly non-linear and that our conditioning is not in the way. It is the way. If we are to truly transform the world around us. We must begin by transforming the world within us.

Reverse Graffiti is an allusion that the author sees on each of us travelers on this journey home to our own true nature based upon the cultural movement of the reverse graffiti art form which juxtaposes the accumulation of dirt on city walls against areas that have been washed away to reveal the wall's essential nature and in so doing create powerful messages and imagery. The presence of the dirt as a symbol of our human conditioning demonstrates that the journey of coming into connection with what dwells beneath the surface is unapologetically messy, raw, beautiful, and a deeply moving testament that our humanity is not an indictment on our spirituality.

The poems and the dharmically inspired prose that fill its pages each offer a glimpse; a window into the often unexamined places within our own hearts and minds. With heart wisdom, it seeks to uncover these places within a sacred container expressed in art form. In this way, the book itself seeks to embody its own premise: that our wounds become our wisdom and we can alchemize our adversity into our artistry. And when we do, the impact is contagious.

Similar titles

  • Inward by Yung Pueblo. Andrews McMeel Publishing (September 2018). Reverse Graffiti is similar in the sense that it offers digestible insights on the practical matters of life as sourced from dharma teachings. It is unique from Inward by way of it's use of poetry in addition to prose and a more varied palette of longer writings. It also covers a wider base of subjects from spiritual to societal. It's audio version will also be unique in that many of the pieces are spoken word poetry and guided meditation. -
  • The She Book by Tanya Markul. Andrews McMeel Publishing (June 2019). Reverse Graffiti is similar in it's vulnerability and rawness. It is different in that it is not written for a specific gender. I chose to include this as a similar title as, even as a man, I deeply connect with many of the pieces by Tanya and often share them in my yoga classes. Reverse Graffiti additionally includes spoken word poetry and guided meditations as well as a few longer pieces than The She Book.
  • Inquire Within by IN-Q. Haper One (March 2020). Reverse Graffiti is comparable to Inquire Within in that it is a collection of very relatable poetry along with stories and moderately longer pieces. It will also similarly read as it's own experience with one piece spread out over multiple pages to create natural pauses. Inquire Within does a wonderful job of staying human and being reflective with both titles having a truly unique audio book. Reverse Graffiti is distinct in that it is decidedly more dharmic.

Audience

This book is written for the seekers. The shadow surfers. The ones journeying ever more deeply to uncover the infinite depths of what resides inwardly. The intended audience includes people interested in mindfulness practices, yoga & meditation practitioners, wellness coaches and their clients. It's appeal spans from millennials to baby boomers.

About the author

So a little about me...

I’m sort of a spiritual mut. Since childhood my religion has been curiosity. I’m admittedly a book nerd and love to deepen my understanding through indigenous and contemporary traditions including various Yogic schools of thought, Vedanta, Buddhism and Enneagram all held within the broader container of Inner Activism.

I’ve spent the better part of the past two decades submerged in spiritually evocative, ancient texts and exploring ways to export their riches into the framework of spoken and written poetry and accessible dharma teachings. But I don’t just love reading and writing about these subjects, I like being the astronaut as much as the astronomer. The heart of my practice is practice. Meditation. Yoga. Contemplative Inquiry. Conscious Relationships. Creative Play. Choosing Love. Being in Nature. Poetry. These are my spirit medicine and the lifeblood of my soul. I see this journey as less about becoming and more about harnessing the bravery to see ourselves fully and love ourselves deeply.

I began teaching meditation and inquiry-based yoga in 2002. Since then I’ve accumulated over 20,000 teaching hours. I’ve had the incredible blessing of creating a community driven healing center and having trained and mentored over 500 yoga and meditation teachers since 2009. I also count as a deep privilege c0-founding a yoga outreach nonprofit that expanded it's reach to over 100 cities internationally. I am thankful to have been a presenting faculty member at The Omega Institute, The Caribbean Yoga Conference and The Omega Yoga Conference and to have facilitated healing retreats in Bali, Peru, Tuscany, Jamaica, Costa Rica, Hawaii and throughout the U.S. Mainland.

1106 Design, LLC

Dear Author,

You worked hard to write your manuscript; finally, it's ready to release. You know that expert assistance is needed, but perhaps you didn’t realize that working with a publisher is no longer necessary—especially publishers who charge fees to produce your book upfront and "share" more of your revenue whenever a book is sold.

1106 Design is an author services company. We offer all the editorial and design services you’d expect from a publisher, transforming your manuscript into a market-ready book. But here's the difference: we help you secure print-on-demand printing and worldwide distribution in your name. This means you earn several dollars more for every book sold instead of a meager “royalty.”

We understand that your book is not just a passion project but also a potential source of income. That's why we offer a range of services tailored to your needs at affordable prices. Depending on your manuscript's word count and complexity, our packages range from $4,000 to $10,000. And here's the best part: after this one-time investment, every penny of net revenue from book sales goes directly to you, never to us.

If this sounds like a better way to publish your book, I invite you to browse our services, design samples, no-surprises pricing, outstanding customer reviews, and educational articles at https://1106design.com. You can download a free PDF of my book, "Publish Like the Pros: A Brief Guide to Quality Self-Publishing and an Insider's Look at a Misunderstood Industry," and request a free, no-obligation consultation.

1106 Design has been in business since 2001 and is rated A+ by the Better Business Bureau. We are a “Highly Recommended Expert” at IngramSpark.com and rated "Excellent" at Alli, The Alliance for Independent Authors, at SelfPublishingAdvice.org, where you can find a "watchdog list" of the best and worst publishing services companies.

    Hey Scott,

Congratulations on your book! So looking forward to reading it! You likely won't remember me, but we had a brief but profound conversation while on a break from Russill Paul's workshop some years back at your yoga shala (which, btw, remains in my mind as one of the coolest bhav-ing shalas I've visited). You're the only other individual I've encountered that had thoughts on the polarity difference between the Tantric schema of Shiva/Shakti and the Taoist Yin/Yang, and that quick chat moved the monologue in my head forward quite a bit, so thanks for that! Wishing you a well-full of mazeltovs and a Molotov cocktail's worth of mic drops to set the world on fire! Namaste and pranams... 🙏
