Synopsis

Zephyr and Eldric, childhood best friends, spent their youth treasure-hunting in the tranquil woods surrounding their home, Verdant Hollow. Their carefree days in the secluded village shaped their bond and led Zephyr to Lyra, the love of his life and future wife. But their peaceful existence is shattered when an earthquake rocks Elandor, exposing an ancient power buried deep beneath the ruins of Morvanya.

Once a thriving kingdom, Morvanya was the lair of Malcarion, the last Dark Wizard, whose malevolent reign ended decades ago. Using forbidden magic, Malcarion forged the Withercoil Amulet—a cursed relic capable of siphoning life to fuel dark sorcery. Though long forgotten, the amulet’s resurgence begins to spread chaos, its curse threatening to consume the land.

Zephyr and Eldric stumble upon a secret council meeting in Verdant Hollow, where they overhear that King Alaric has sent royal messengers with dire warnings: the amulet has been unearthed, and its power is already wreaking havoc. When Eldric accidentally makes a noise, the boys are discovered but plead to take on the mission of destroying the relic. Though the council is reluctant, they ultimately agree, sending the pair on a journey that will determine the kingdom’s fate.

The village celebrates their departure with a grand party at The Green Veil Inn, a rare moment of revelry in the quiet hamlet. Zephyr and Eldric, flush with excitement and drinks, pass out in their room, only to awaken to chaos. Eldric rouses Zephyr with news that half the village is ablaze, and the two rush to aid the panicked townsfolk.

As they prepare to leave Verdant Hollow, the town elder, Dorrin Greybeard, intercepts them. He warns of the dangers ahead, blaming the fires on Malcarion’s curse and the evil magic unleashed from the tomb. Dorrin provides them with horses, supplies, and a parting plea: “Beware the shadows; they’re darker than they seem.”

For the first time, the boys leave their sheltered home, marveling at the vibrant beauty of Brightbloom Forest and the sparkling waters of Lake Whisperwind. Their awe is short-lived. Bandits ambush them—a brutal group of humans, orcs, and an elf. The skirmish is vicious. Eldric is dragged to the lake and nearly drowned, while Zephyr fights desperately to save him. Just when all seems lost, Zephyr slays the final orc and revives Eldric, pounding on his chest until he spits out the water, choking his lungs.

Shaken but resolute, they press on to Gravenreach, a city shrouded in shadow. Upon arrival, the boys seek medical attention for their wounds before Zephyr reunites with Lyra, who now works in the village library. Her father, Caldrik, initially greets Zephyr with hostility but softens, recognizing the love between his daughter and the determined young man. Eldric, meanwhile, explores the library, his fascination with reading growing.

The trio spends a joyful day together, but their happiness is fleeting. The following morning, Zephyr wakes to find Eldric missing and frantically searches the town, only to find him bathing in a nearby river, unbothered. Their camaraderie seems restored until they return to their inn, where a group of sheriffs arrests them for Lyra’s rape and murder.

Zephyr is devastated, his world collapsing as he processes the accusation. Both boys are imprisoned, enduring days of questioning and suspicion. Finally, evidence clears their names, and they are released—but not without scars. The betrayal of trust from the people of Gravenreach weighs heavily on them, and Zephyr’s grief over Lyra’s death is a wound that never heals.

Determined to finish their mission, they continue toward Morvanya. Along the road, they are ambushed again—this time by soldiers of King Alaric who mistake them for traitors. Beaten and tortured, the boys endure unimaginable pain before their identities are confirmed. With their strength and hope dwindling, they press on to the ruins of Morvanya, their resolve hardened by every trial they’ve faced.

At last, they reach the crumbling remnants of Malcarion’s castle. Within its shadowy halls, they find the Withercoil Amulet, resting in a cursed tomb. Together, they attempt to seal it, sliding the heavy lid back into place. But as the amulet glints in the dim light, its sinister allure grips Eldric.

Ignoring Zephyr’s pleas, Eldric reaches out and touches the relic. His body convulses as Malcarion’s dark essence takes hold, his mind consumed by whispers of power and destiny. Zephyr tries to intervene, but Eldric, now under Malcarion’s thrall, turns on him. In a harrowing battle, the two clash, their lifelong friendship shattered by the amulet’s curse. The fight ends in tragedy—Eldric drives his dagger through Zephyr, killing his closest friend.

With Malcarion’s curse fully unleashed, Eldric embraces his dark transformation, reclaiming Morvanya as his domain. The amulet amplifies his power, allowing him to sway the minds of King Alaric’s soldiers and build an army of his own. When Alaric’s forces arrive to confront him, they are met with devastating defeat. The once-noble Eldric emerges victorious, unscathed, and begins rebuilding Morvanya as a dark fortress.

Dear Author,

You worked hard to write your manuscript, and you know that expert assistance is needed to ready it for the market. But perhaps you didn’t realize that working with a publisher is no longer necessary—especially publishers who charge fees to produce your book upfront and "share" more of your revenue whenever a book is sold.

1106 Design is an author services company that has served over 4,000 authors since 2001. We offer all the editorial and design services you’d expect from a publisher, transforming your manuscript into a polished book. But here's the difference: we help you secure print-on-demand printing and worldwide distribution in YOUR name. This means you'll earn several dollars more for every book sold instead of a meager “royalty” and never lose control of your book or your book files.

We understand that your book is not just a passion project but also a potential source of income. No two books or authors are alike. That's why we'll customize a package of services tailored to your needs at affordable prices, starting at $5,555. And here's the best part: after this one-time investment, every penny of revenue from book sales is deposited directly to your bank account, never to ours first.

If this sounds like a better way to publish your book, I invite you to browse our services, design samples, no-surprises pricing, outstanding customer reviews, and educational articles at https://1106design.com. You can download a free PDF of my book, "Publish Like the Pros: A Brief Guide to Quality Self-Publishing and an Insider's Look at a Misunderstood Industry," and request a free, no-obligation consultation.

1106 Design is rated A+ by the Better Business Bureau. We are a “Highly Recommended Expert” at IngramSpark.com and rated "Excellent" at Alli, The Alliance for Independent Authors, at SelfPublishingAdvice.org. Alli's "watchdog list" of the best and worst publishing services companies is an invaluable resource.

How can we serve you today?

Chapter 8

He awakes in absolute darkness, the kind so dense it feels like a physical presence pressing down on his chest, swallowing all sense of space and orientation. Giving a heavy sense of insecurity and tightness, the kind that makes the man question if all the blackness is real or some part of his imagination. The air is thick, heavy with an unnatural silence, broken only by faint, disembodied whispers. These voices drift in and out, indistinct, like murmurs brushing against the edges of hearing. As soon as the man gets close to determining where the whispers are coming from, they move again. As soon as he starts to figure out whose voice is doing the whispering, the voice changes. The whispers seem ancient, speaking in a language long forgotten or in fragments of half-formed words, laced with a chilling cadence. Each whisper echoes slightly, as though originating from somewhere deep within the shadows, yet surrounding the man entirely, tugging at the edges of his mind.

He knows he is stuck. He has broken into a sweat but is too afraid to move because the darkness is too much. The man can sense someone or something nearby, but his eyes are unable to adjust to the depth of this much darkness. There is no light, not even a sliver of the moon to offer some assistance for looking into the void. Deep in his heart, he knows he needs to move from this location. He can feel the shadows, the beings, the darkness growing into grotesque objects from deep within his imagination. As he stumbles into the nothingness he begins to scream. A raw scream deep from within. A plea for help. Help from the darkness. Help from the whispers. Help from himself.

He can feel anger, sadness, and despair fill his body, which swallows his body whole until he is a fragment of himself. The whispers begin to grow again, weaving around the man, in a strange and hypnotic rhythm. These whispers are lined with sorrow, anger, worry, regret, and warning, which rise and fall in volume like some unseen ocean tide. These tides of emotions pull the man deeper into the darkness, until he screams himself hoarse.

There is a shift in the darkness, as if something has awoken, or found the man stumbling through the void of nothingness. Something stirs and the darkness feels alive now. The shadows begin to reach out toward the man, making the hairs on the back of his neck rise, while cold vines of air brush against his skin. The voices become more prominent, carrying a hiss that feels closer—moving without form, behind you, then side to side. Images dance through his mind: broken landscapes, ruined castles, faces twisted in forever silent agony, fire, all surrounded by the same darkness that is currently swallowing the man.

As his heartbeat quickens, the man realizes something. These whispers aren’t just meaningless sounds, but a soft whoosh that carries a message. A warning is buried under layers and layers of shadows, while the man tries to focus on the warning. But he is unable to reach the warning from the never-ending fleeting whisper. He worries the darkness might consume him entirely until a fire explodes across his vision. The sudden bright light blinds him in the utter darkness. The sound of timbers falling pulls his attention away from the whispers, until they turn into screams. Finally, he is able to see the scene before him.

The Veil is on fire. Verdant Hollow is on fire. The man would prefer to live in the endless darkness than watch a fire consume this small village. Then the whispering returns and he is consumed by a vengeance. A thirst for power as the shadows hide the man yet again, fully encased in the ancient powers released from Morvanya.

Malcarion loomed in the distance, his figure barely visible through the murky darkness, yet somehow distinct—floating, unnatural, with a grin stretching far too wide across his pallid face. His skin, ghostly white, glowed faintly, a sickly beacon against the shadows like the last embers of a dying fire. His eyes were hollow black voids, staring with a haunting, piercing intensity that seemed to strip away all warmth from the air. Purple veins bulged and twisted under his skin, slithering like countless worms creeping from his hands to his face, pulsing with a life of their own. As he drew nearer, a stench of rot and decay thickened in the air, clawing its way into the man’s senses, leaving a bitter taste of death that clung to every breath.

He opened his mouth to scream once more, but before the sound could escape, a blinding flash enveloped him, and in an instant, everything vanished.
