Imagine a nightmare where everyone acts like someone who is in a reality show. Obsessed with winning, appearance, power, and manipulating others for their own personal gain. That is where we are heading unless we deliberately fix it. Empathy is decreasing, and narcissism is on the rise.

A host of cognitive biases keep people in the dark about how their actions affect those around them, and nowhere is that more evident than the workplace. It’s a veritable laboratory to explore how our brains stop us from becoming the human leader that we want to be, and those we serve need us to be. The first step in overcoming these biases is realizing we have them.

“The CARE Equation” exposes these biases that hinder humans from leading with empathy, inclusiveness, and connectedness. With this newfound awareness, it will help people overcome those biases through our CARE mindset: provide Clarity to your interactions, Autonomy to those you interact with, and encourage open and honest Relationships in your life to create a more Equitable environment for all involved.

The data on building the CARE model, came from watching over 5,000 people lead under immense pressure. Coincidence? We doubt it!

Alex Draper, CEO of DX Learning, puts forward a simple and applicable approach to leadership in the modern workforce and beyond. Helping leaders dig deep into their brains to expose the ways in which it is hardwired to prevent them from being the best leaders they can be.

The challenge? These principles are antithetical to our innate neural pathways and require serious work from people who want to get better. Ever wonder why there are so few great leaders? It’s hard! Not to worry, though. Through exercises designed to reveal your biases and real-world stories that illustrate these biases at work, The CARE Equation can help anyone overcome their own minds and break free from their stodgy leadership style to a new and more human approach to leading.

Your brain did not evolve for you to be a leader, but neither was anyone else’s. Our brains are designed to keep us warm, fed, and safe from danger. In doing so, it can also make us incapable of the care and nurturing that comes with true leadership.

Sales arguments

  • Big loyal fan base with over 100 relationships with decision makers in companies that can help promote the book.
  • 20 years in the industry, with over 5,000 LI followers, and email list of 7,500.
  • Despite being less than 6 years old, DX’s client list is impressive. Fortune 500 companies that use CARE as part of their leadership training initiatives include Discover Financial; Takeda; Zurich Insurance; TEKsystems; Eaton Corporation; Borg Warner; Flowserve; Ultimate Software; ManpowerGroup, and many others.
  • Alex has been a speaker at major industry conferences, like ATD, HRMAC and HCI where he can promote the book and offer further experience through it.
  • We care less about people. The results show that the average level of “empathic concern,” meaning people's feelings of sympathy for the misfortunes of others, declined by 48% between 1979 and 2009; the average level of “perspective taking,” people's tendencies to imagine others' points of view, declined by 34% over the same period.

Similar titles

  • "The Advice Trap" by Michael Bungay Steiner. Box of Crayons Press, 2020 - In both this book, and his first book The Coaching Habit, the inspiration was that you could read a book in a day, and it literally “changed you”, and motivated you to put it into action. Alex wants The CARE Equation to be exactly that. Simple and easy to apply.
  • "Leaders eat last" by Simon Sinek. Portfolio, 2017 - The CARE Equation will not only walk you through the WHY and the WHAT, its key differentiator is just how simple the HOW (application) will be to every facet of your life.
  • "The 7 habits of highly effective people" by Stephen Covey. Simon & Schuster, 1920 - The CARE Equation is applicable to anyone in any situation, both at home and at work, as it leverages behavioral psychology. Both books focus on timeless principles of fairness, integrity, honesty and human dignity.

Primarily, existing senior to mid level managers, and aspiring leaders looking for a head start. Secondarily, anyone who wants to learn how to improve how they positively influence others, both at work or in the non-work life, and thought leadership was just for CEO’s and Presidents.

Advance praise

“The CARE program is exceptional, and embracing it has helped my leadership team successfully navigate the current challenges with greater confidence, communication, connection, grace and empathy (and stronger results).”
- Jim Pitts, Director Operations, SecurAmerica.

“What most struck me was that the concepts covered [in CARE] are more important and applicable now than ever -providing clarity in difficult times, learning how to lead by empowering others; fighting an impulse to be controlling; leaning into our strong relationships, and finally ensuring we are meeting our people where they are. Our pilot team that went through it had great feedback, and more importantly appreciated the investment and care by our company (pun intended) that being part of this showed."
- Erik Benchoff, Director of Leadership, TEKsystems.

“As we’re building a meaningful learning journey for new managers to aid their transition into management at Zurich, one of the first opportunities for them to develop their leadership skills will be to participate in CARE. We’re thrilled to get these managers started by immersing them in The CARE Experience where they will learn how to communicate a clear vision and intent, to create a supportive and empowering environment for their people, to build strong, mutually beneficial relationships, and to establish equity across the team. CARE reminds us of the human elements of leadership and the importance of creating psychological safety for our high-performing culture to thrive.”
- Melissa Versino, AVP, Talent Development, Zurich Insurance.

“Every once in a while, something comes along that just makes sense. CARE is that once in a every-so-often thing we should just all do. You can’t argue with it.”
- David Lowe, Director of Global Sales Operations at Flowserve.
