Synopsis

1. Despite 34 years of well intentioned effort we have yet to make the global economy sustainable. There is increasing interest today in a concept called "The Circular Economy" (CE) as a solution. Many people think they know what CE is but they only see the simple concept and have little or no understanding of the more complex global business models into which it needs to be integrated in the real world. In addition, they do not understand that Circularity is not a panacea and is not automatically sustainable! In sum, they like the idea but lack a systematic process to implement it in the real world.

Audience: Individuals who want to make the world more sustainable but who don't know what they can do; designers and businesses who struggle with how to internalize concepts of sustainable circular economy successfully into a business and ogranizational setting.

2. The solution outlined in the book provides a new, creative, design led process for anyone interested in a deeper understanding of sustainable circular economy and how to implement the concept in new or existing businesses in the real world.

The process visualizes Nature's circle of life (creation-growth-death) as the faces of a 3-diemsional pyramid with the base as Sustainability represented fractally as Economics, Environment and Equity.

From Nature's model a business-centric equivalent is visualized. "The Ultimate Business Cycle" of the title is created for Product and Service business design cycles and is integrated with the well-known (and frequently used) stage-gate product development process.

Users of products and services are also engaged in completing the cycle through a combination of social acivism and participation in new online platforms designed to faciliate new sustainably circular B2B and B2C business models.

3. I have a unique life and work experience with 21 years working as an "environmental intrapreneur" in a major multinational consumer products company in multiple corporate, marketing and R&D roles, and a further 21 years as a business consultant. I ran the consulting company for the thought leaders of "Cradle to Cradle design" in the sustainability/environmental category and for the past 4 years I've been consulting independently. This is my unique "take" synthesizing over 42 years of active enegagment in business sustainability and advocates a solution to the chronic unsustainability issues we face with actions that individuals can take and a system that businesses can implement in their product and service development processes.
