Hi I'm Larne, Child Psychologist and creator of the Confident Kids program. Anxiety among children and adolescents is on the rise in Australia and it's slowly draining the joy from young lives. Peer pressure, not doing well at school, being excluded or bullied, anxiety, family conflicts or friendship issues can shake a child's confidence. More than any other generation, kids need additional coping strategies and tools to help them achieve their personal best.

As a mum of two teenage girls, I understand the unique challenges faced by today's generation of children and teens. My own experience of overcoming daily bullying in primary school and anxiety in adolescence ignited my passion for helping young people build resilience and well-being.

In 2008, I researched and created Confident Kids + Teens and since that time hundreds of children have completed the program. What makes Confident Kids unique is the lovable characters, stories and songs that reinforce key strategies and provide a fun and interactive way of engaging younger children. Older children enjoy the inclusion of technology and a variety of engaging mediums such as YouTube, music and video.

The Adventures of CK and Friends is based on the popular characters from the Confident Kids program, CK the wise Gecko, Meg and Jack and a host of other characters. As Meg and Jack encounter common problems that children face, they learn tips and tools to build social and emotional resilience.

Larne has contributed to publications such as Body + Soul Magazine, Girlfriend Magazine and Good Health. She has been a guest on the Talking Life program on 96.5 FM and featured in a two-part documentary series on SBS called Once Bitten: Love the second time around.

As an experienced Child and Family Psychologist, as well as a Registered Family Mediator, Larne has worked with hundreds of parents and families to navigate the challenges of family life today. The book incorporates proven, evidence-based psychological strategies that parents, teachers, children, guidance counsellors and other professionals can utilise.

Larne says raising two daughters as a single parent has been tough. As there's only so many hours in the day, development of the CK story was unfortunately on hold. But as her daughters near the end of their school years, Larne is looking forward to investing more time and energy in developing the lovable CK characters. With your help, the dream will become a reality.

Synopsis

SYNOPSIS

The adventures of CK and Friends

A self-help book to deal with stress and anxiety for kids ages 6+

If you sometimes feel angry or frustrated or scared, if you have ever been bullied at school, bossed around or treated unfairly, then this book can help you.
Jack is stressed out. His parents are divorced, he misses his mum and struggles with friendships at school. Meg and her parents have just moved to a new city and in a few days’ time, it will be her first day at a new school. Meg feels lost without her old friends and is feeling anxious about fitting in. What if the other kids don’t like her? Then she meets Jack, her new neighbour who lives next door. Jack introduces Meg to CK the Gecko, who lives in his backyard. CK is a 'talking gecko' who acts as a coach to Meg and Jack and teaches them how to stick up for themselves in healthy, positive ways as they encounter real-life challenges.

Through each chapter, CK coaches Meg and Jack how to develop positive thought habits, manage strong emotions, make friends and build positive relationships, improve school performance, learn ways to deal with stress and worries, deal with bullying and peer pressure and set goals. Situational anecdotes are age appropriate and relevant to children.Parents and children will come to love the characters as they face real life challenges.

This book speaks directly to kids and offers strategies they can start using immediately. Blending tips and strategies with humour, helps children learn to coach themselves.

Using a positive, Cognitive-behavioural and mindfulness-based approach, the book is based on a program developed for children and teenagers called the “Confident Kids and Teens Program”.

The book offers strategies ideal for use by parents, teachers, therapists, guidance counsellors and coaches and is useful as a text for small groups, classrooms and counseling sessions.

The story behind "The Adventures of CK and Friends"

Since 2008, the CK characters and story have been loved by children who have participated in the Confident Kids resilience program. Due to repeated requests to purchase the story and materials from parents and professionals around Australia, the next step is to develop the resources, so children around the world have the chance to discover the delightful and lovable characters.

CK and friends was conceived as part of the Confident Kids program to coach and guide children through the course material. The story has been an overwhelming success with all ages.

Audience

How will pre-order funds be used?

The book is close to completion, but requires professional editing and illustration. Once that is complete I will focus on printing and marketing. My goal is for the book to reach as many children around the world as possible so that they can get to know the CK characters and boost their emotional resilience at the same time.

Promotion

The book will be marketed via Publishizer, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Pinterest and my email list, which is currently over 1,500.

There will be opportunities to promote the book through the Australian Psychological Society (APS), within the psychology clinic and in schools throughout the country.

Competition

There are numerous social and emotional (SEL) programs available today in schools. However there are few self-help chapter books written for 6 -12 year olds that incorporate tips and tools to boost their emotional resilience.

Other children's books in the self-help area include -

Stick up for Yourself: Every Kid's Guide to Personal Power
Positive Self-Esteem. By Kaufman, Raphael, Espeland

Mind over Basketball: Coach yourself to handle stress. By Weierbach
