About the author

Sierra Melcher is a Holistic Transformational Mentor, Women's Circle holder and Author. For 12 years she worked as an international educator teaching in schools around the world. She trained as a Doula, Reiki Master, Yoga teacher, and historian. In her current work, she has worked with women from 29 countries supporting the discovery and deepening of their "Primary Relationship," the relationship one has with herself. This is her 2nd book. She has written for several online magazines, published a short story in an anthology and has been a guest on several podcasts. She is from the USA and now lives in Medellin, Colombia.

More women are single, later in life, than ever before. 53.2% of 110.6 million Americans, as of 2017 census. Romance has shifted dramatically in the last few decades. So many women, especially are choosing to be single. The new fixer-upper project is herself. Whether in a reaction to #metoo or putting all their focus on career many more women are choosing to be and stay single.

Yet being in a relationship still positively correlates to happiness and long-term health, according to the UC Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center. Today’s ambitious and independent women are entering uncharted territory. Breaking up already? “I haven’t even started dating myself yet!”
No darling. We have some cleaning up to do of the past. This chapter is rich with exercises that are vital for finishing, once and for all, what you have carried with you until this point: old wounds, residual energy from past lovers, your internal predator (when you are your own worst enemy), and a lifetime of energetic clutter. You have a lot to break up with before you are ready to intentionally date yourself.

I will not let you be a rebound. This is not a relationship you jump into in order to numb the sting of a recent breakup. This is not a relationship you try on to distract you. This is not a relationship that is just en vogue. This is the real thing. You are going to have to get really dirty. Clean up all the old messes to make your tabula rasa, blank slate. If you skip this step, your future relationships will be tainted by your past the way your water bottle will taste of whatever was in it last if you don’t wash it.

You have people to say goodbye to. You have personal patterns to shed. Old ideas linger. Clutter (emotional and physical) needs to be swept away to make space, literal and energetic, for something new: space for you. Have fun in the rumble. Savour all the sickening sensations. Be brave. Be bold. Let them wrack you. And then be done with them. Set them all ablaze and rise from the ashes.

Step 1: Dear John letter(s).
Dear John letters are the original breakup via text. Traditionally partners may have been separated by great distance due to war etc. Women wrote Dear John letters to break up with boyfriend/husband usually because they had found a new lover. In your case, you are breaking up with ex’s, crushes, anyone who has a hold of your heart in any way… and YOU are the new lover.

Write these letters to the people you are still clinging to emotionally or energetically. We all have people from our life, past or present. If there is still something nagging you, write it down. Crushes too. Unrequited love takes up a lot of space, clear it out, let it go, and make space for something else.

Dear John letters are:
Cathartic: release all old emotions onto the page to free yourself from storing
Full honest, no holds barred: leave it all on the page. Best when handwritten
