The wisdom of Hebrew proverbs

In Israel, sayings are not just words—they are a survival strategy, a philosophy and a way of life.
Translated Hebrew proverbs (old and new) offer valuable insight into various themes that reflect the culture, character, resilience and heritage of Israel as a nation.
The wisdom behind these expressions speaks to anyone who values relentless drive, resilience, adaptability, and humour.

Synopsis

The book should appeal to anyone who is interested in the culture, history and character of Israel and its people as well as their entrepreneurial skills.

Discover through their language, what are the Israeli character traits that make them so resilient and successful? The traits that make a country of 10 million able to completely overwhelm a nation about ten times its size over 2,000 miles away. What makes Israelis, wherever they live in the world, so entrepreneurial and prosperous with remarkable mental resilience?

How can people living in a country with so much diversity, surrounded by enemies that wish to destroy them, be happy? What is their secret for happiness?

The answer lies in the culture that is manifested through the language. Thus, this punchy, timely book is written in an original manner by translating everyday proverbs, phrases, expressions and idioms and using them as topics through which an amazing human tapestry, about relentless drive, resilience, adaptability, perseverance, bravery, entrepreneurship, success, failure but also having fun, is being revealed.

The book is full of historic events with personal interpretations, anecdotes and associations of an Israeli thinking mind. It covers Jewish and Israeli wisdom, but it is completely universal and at the same time also very topical as it also directly relates to the 7 October atrocities and events that followed in Israel, the region and the world.

I have written it as Israel and its history are misunderstood and misrepresented while at the same time, I noticed that my translations of Jewish and Israeli proverbs and phrases have always seemed to hit the mark when talking to my friends and work colleagues in the UK. These catchy short phrases have been well received with a general air of surprise expressed regarding how well they illustrated a situation and, in many cases, how thought provoking, inspiring, life affirming and sometimes cheeky they are. Many of the topics that I cover are not known well enough.

One of the proverbs I write about is ‘The words of the wise are heard in tranquillity’. I comment that driven by social and global media outlets; it often seems that the loudest shouters are the ones who are winning the argument. Thus, the social media era seemingly contradicts the generations’ old axiom above as the truth and real knowledge is “drowned” in the flood of propaganda. But, I conclude that this is not the case as the majority is silent.

Although the book presents intellectually stimulating content, it is written in a manner that is both engaging and accessible. The narrative moves swiftly between a range of diverse subjects, allowing readers to encounter and understand sometimes complex matters with ease. In the last chapter, I summarise it with the proverb ‘Short hits the aim, long is lame’.

1106 Design, LLC

Dear Author,

You worked hard to write your manuscript, and you know that expert assistance is needed to ready it for the market. But perhaps you didn’t realize that working with a publisher is no longer necessary—especially publishers who charge fees to produce your book upfront and "share" more of your revenue whenever a book is sold.

1106 Design is an author services company that has served over 4,000 authors since 2001. We offer all the editorial and design services you’d expect from a publisher, transforming your manuscript into a polished book. But here's the difference: we help you secure print-on-demand printing and worldwide distribution in YOUR name. This means you'll earn several dollars more for every book sold instead of a meager “royalty” and never lose control of your book or your book files.

We understand that your book is not just a passion project but also a potential source of income. No two books or authors are alike. That's why we'll customize a package of services tailored to your needs at affordable prices, starting at $5,555. And here's the best part: after this one-time investment, every penny of revenue from book sales is deposited directly to your bank account, never to ours first.

If this sounds like a better way to publish your book, I invite you to browse our services, design samples, no-surprises pricing, outstanding customer reviews, and educational articles at https://1106design.com. The first chapter is called ‘True Grit’ as it is one of the most dominating characteristics of Israel and the Jewish nation. I begin by making a seemingly straightforward statement:

כל ההתחלות קשות

All the beginnings are difficult

A traditional saying, although very much part of modern-day Israel.

This statement may sound trivial, but it is surprising how often people complain about difficulties at a very early stage of their journey. People often give up too early whether at work, relationships and other challenges in every aspect of life.

The truth is that starting anything, whatever it is, will always be challenging at the early stages even if you plan well in advance. Life, as we know it, hardly ever goes in line with a script, there will always be unexpected developments.

Each one of us has stories to tell about difficulties and challenges that they have had to overcome in any aspect of life. Everyone knows that the list of qualities needed to overcome these is very long and grit is definitely one of them. Israelis understand that they need to have grit and persistence to deal with whatever life throws at them. They internalise the need to be flexible, change direction and innovate. If it does not “flow”, just try and try again.

Take the development of the upcoming book, the process began with compiling an extensive list of proverbs and expressions. The subsequent step involved carefully selecting those best suited for inclusion; specifically, those that could be illustrated through compelling narratives reflecting Israeli culture, history, as well as the broader human experience. Given the profound insights contained within the material, I was facing a stimulating intellectual challenge. Additionally, it was essential to ensure that all information remained accurate and faithful to its original sources. But ‘all the beginnings are difficult’…

Take the Israeli nation’s rebirth process, since the first wave of renewed Jewish immigration to the land of Israel, which was part of the Ottoman Empire, in 1880s, it has been full of challenges. The “land of milk and honey” has not been welcoming. The areas where Jews could buy land to settle were located in the more problematic parts of the territory. These were either mainly swamp or the arid areas where you either had too much water and malaria or drought.

In any case, the idea to develop flourishing Jewish agricultural settlements was not that straightforward (not to mention that Jews in the diaspora were not generally known for their agricultural skills). Times were so tough that for decades these settlements largely survived on donations. Even Tel Aviv, the first truly Jewish city in the world, was established in 1909 on sands to the north of Jaffa where no one wanted to live at the time.

This first proverb provids me with the opportunity to introduce Rabbi Shlomo Yitzchaki, known by the acronym Rashi. Born in France in 1040, Rashi was a genius leading biblical exegete and Jewish scholar. Acclaimed for his ability to present the basic meaning of the text in a concise and lucid fashion, his works remain a centrepiece of contemporary Jewish studies. As I cover some ancient proverbs in the book, I re-visit Rashi’s comments to highlight his eternal wisdom.

Rashi’s commentaries often add a spiritual context, for him the phrase ‘all the beginnings are difficult’ means that accepting the rule of the Bible may seem difficult at first, but in time, it will be rewarding. It signifies that growth, faith, and self-improvement require effort. Whether in learning, relationships, or personal development, persistence transforms initial struggles into a lasting fulfilment.
