About the author

Kalyna is the Founder of Kickstart Your Work, an onstage storyteller and global explorer. She has dedicated her life to helping women love the work they do. Kalyna has coached over 4,000 hours with clients in 21 countries around the world. She specifically supports women to take their work online so they can work from anywhere while delivering value to clients.

Kalyna started her first business at 19 years of age, doing digital strategy in her dad’s backyard by the pool. She loves storytelling both on and off stage and most recently spoke at UCLA and TEDxWLU about how to navigate career building while focusing on what feels good.

She’s been traveling full time since 2014, visiting over 25 countries so far and living in Aruba, Brazil, the US and of course Canada her home. Kalyna has a blast running a completely location independent business and believes feeling good while at work needs to be the new normal for everyone. In her free time she loves yoga, Brazilian dance, trying all sorts of foods and searching for the world’s best hammock on the beach.

Kalyna is passionate about mentoring and giving back to young girls. She remembers the experience of feeling like she didn't belong at school and knows that supporting a grassroots initiative near home is the start to impacting young girls globally. She donates her time and a percentage of Kickstart Your Work's sales to Girls Inc., to support girls having the positive role models that she believes make all the difference for youth.

What is building a successful legacy about?

Success is such a deeply personal thing: it means one thing to me, another to you, and probably something entirely different to our parents. I’ve worked more than 5,000 hours coaching clients in 21 countries around the world.

During this time, I have identified that our personal ideas of success are intrinsically tied our sense of fulfillment and that our sense of fulfilment is directly affected by our actions. There are three key aspects to this: choice, fulfillment and impact. Within these three factors there are various life skills that we can both recognise and harness to get us closer to that sense of joy – closer to our own personal idea of success.

Choice means having the freedom to choose how you spend your time. It means being deliberate about what you focus on. If we are able to choose your work environment and responsibilities carefully, we’re less likely to end up blaming others when we hate what we’re doing day in and day out. In the first part of this book, we’ll take a look at where you’re at; where you want to be; and, most importantly, what’s holding you back from that idealized vision. Then, you’ll make the choice of whether or not you want to stick with what you’ve been doing so far or whether you want to build this new career model for yourself.

One thing that always seems to remain a constant in our society is that success is linked to money. I would argue that success is having autonomy over how you spend your time. This includes the health and wherewithal to be able to spend it as you wish. Money often means safety, a sense of security and, once our needs are met, freedom. It factors in as an enabler for us to be able to do what we want. You’re going to make varying amounts of money over the course of your life no matter what you choose to do for work. It’s also critical to note that it’s about the wealth you create along the way. Spending all you make is a zero-sum game and doesn’t get any of us far. So, instead of allowing money to be the only conscious driver, we’re going to focus on building character – something that you’re proud of. We’ll start with figuring what you enjoy doing, and then find ways that those activities can bring you a level of income you would consider “successful.” No job comes with any real guarantees so it’s crucial that you garner a level of fulfillment out of what you do.

Enjoying something doesn’t just mean that it is fun. Sometimes, I gain enjoyment in developing a solution to a seemingly impossible situation. Sometimes I enjoy working from my bed. At other times I want to be around lots of people. Enjoyment is fluid, it is contextual. Fulfilment on the other hand is deeper and more enduring. It gives you a sense of satisfaction. Just making slight changes to our current situation can mean we find an enjoyment in what we do. It often takes radical change to make your life fulfilling. This book isn’t here to tell you to jump from the lifeboats and leave your stable job to travel to Vietnam just because it’s the cool thing to do this year. But it will cause you to question the way you are driving your boat and the boat you’ve chosen to drive.

In the second section, you will discover what fulfillment looks like for you, and you will use that to build out the terms of your career so that you’re happy with it. That might mean staying exactly where you are and tweaking a few smaller things, or it might mean that you do need to pack your bags and fly to Shanghai. Either way, this section will help you get real with yourself about what you actually care about.

The last section of the book is about impact, and this is where you’ll focus on your contribution to others in the wider world. It is your legacy via your reputation and the value you provide for others. Once you’ve established your non-negotiables and are taking care of your needs, then you’re ready to help other people. Having a clear idea about what you want to create and achieve in your career is crucial and is often the difference between people that are constantly complaining about work and those that are actively finding solutions and innovating. This final section is where we’ll talk about how to identify the ideal receivers of your work; how to deliver your work to make the most meaningful impact and – yes – how to get paid for doing the stuff you like doing.

You may be thinking: why not skip to the last part? Well, you can. I often skip to the parts of the book I want to read the most, too. But when I do that I’ve found that the information I’m resisting (skipping over, criticizing or deeming irrelevant) is often the stuff I need to be reading the most. You’re going to get more from this experience if you come along for the entire ride. The choice is yours, but I invite you to come on this road with me, and bring a journal with you to record your thoughts. The most important consequences of taking this journey are the answers you’re going to generate from the questions that are asked throughout it. Let’s get started.

What part of this situation can I take responsibility for?

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all book by any means, and neither are the real-life examples that are included throughout. Take from them what you will. They’re exemplary in nature by definition — and, thus, not prescriptive.

I recently got into a car accident where I sustained a severe concussion. My life, along with the writing of this book, got put on hold. I lay in my bed for a month. I wore sunglasses at all times – even at night. Being in my bed and sleeping roughly 18 hours a day, I felt like I was in an isolation chamber. This definitely gave me some time to reconsider things. When my accident happened, I had all sorts of people to blame, such as the driver who hit me, who didn’t stop at a stop sign. It was a pivotal moment in my life, when everything seemed to collide. I felt down and out. Was I going to fold and give up? Or was I going to use this as a springboard to better things?

Now, my car accident has absolutely nothing to do with your career… or does it? Think of this moment, right now – reading this book – as if it was a severe concussion: an opportunity to choose change at all costs because there’s no turning back. What if you could make the choice to change, without needing the concussion, or the totaled vehicle?

The thing that’s holding you back, to put it lightly, is you.

My Dad

My dad worked with cars when I was growing up, and he now owns a number of autobody workshops. He worked hard for every penny, putting in long hours and he often talked about how he sacrificed for our family. But he also loved fixing cars and helping others. He sacrificed time with his family whilst he worked but he got something else: he got enjoyment out of his work and he made an impact in the world while also earning the money his family needed.

We all choose where we put our focus, but society (and sometimes even our parents, friends or our partners) can make us feel like it’s only noble if the story we tell is one of sacrifice and pain. The idea of suffering being a crucial part of earning your success is such a common concept. And then it becomes a competition to see who can suffer the most for their work: “You don’t sleep? Well I don’t eat!" Is it healthy for life to be about who has it harder and worse? Let’s cut that out, right now. You can tell your story like it’s been an awful time, or you can talk about all of the learning and experiences you’ve had, from a place of gratitude. My dad has taught me to be grateful for everything I have.

Look, I know what you’re thinking. Every mindfulness and transformation book talks about gratitude, and it can seem played out. I say “thank you” every time someone opens a door, and I’m glad I’m alive. Isn’t that enough? Well, yes and no. If you’re connected to your heart, then you start to realize that this whole “being human” thing is a really cool gift. You get to be in a body, feel things and change lives. Little things can be more joyful than we often recognize.

I’ve noticed that, in my life, the challenging times really do pile on all at once, and so do the good times. When things are good, they somehow keep getting better. But when I’m in a funk, the parking tickets, car accidents, sprained ankles, getting dumped and gaining weight all happen in the span of a month.

So, what do we do with gratitude, and how do we use it to our benefit? Think for a moment. What is the best thing that’s happened to you over the past year. Now, think about the worst thing that’s happened. Which one did you learn more from? Exactly. We learn from the difficult, the challenging, the not-so-sexy. So, rather than victimizing and making it a bad thing, let’s call a spade a spade. The transformation comes from the dark and challenging moments we experience.

The good is easy to mine for joy. Let’s start finding gold in the bad and the ugly.

This man has transformed the lives of so many with one simple premise: take responsibility for your life. Based on what I’ve learned in supporting clients with their work over the years, I have expanded on Peterson’s idea. How does the idea of responsibility translate when we talk about things that seem unavoidable or out of our control? What does this mean when it comes to getting awarded that promotion, asking for more vacation days, or navigating which negotiation strategy will be best for the next contract you want to land? Simply put, I’d say this model starts with truly identifying what’s in your control. For me, mastering this idea has changed the way I run every aspect of my life. I’m perpetually asking, what can I take responsibility for? And what can I let go of? Those two questions help me consciously filter out what should stay and what needs to go in terms of what I take responsibility for.

I have often found that wisdom comes from being able to really hear what our inner voice, and God (or higher power) is whispering to us. When it comes to taking responsibility in our careers, I believe the key thing to consider is what element(s) of your work you’re ready to take ownership of. Ideally, everything you contribute to is what you choose to take responsibility for. As we continue on this journey, your willingness to take responsibility for things is what I believe will dictate your long-lasting fulfillment.

What’s the biggest learning experience (“failure”) you’ve had so far at work? Identify at least one thing that makes you glad it happened. Great! Now you’re an expert at finding the silver lining in situations. Let’s do it again, and make it bigger.

To create a life that’s different, better and more exciting than “normal,” we’ve got to craft a personal story that compels us to act. We’ll be working on this concept throughout the book, but let’s start with where you are right now. My personal story could go a number of ways. I could harp on the challenges I’ve faced, focus on the amazing parts and pretend everything is perfect or I could land somewhere in the middle of that spectrum. In order to make any changes in my life, I’ve realized that I need to identify where I’m starting from.

1: Choose one thing about your work situation that you’re ready to take responsibility for and decide what you can change about it right now.

2: Ask someone to partner with you on this book going forward. Seriously. I had many accountability partners whilst trying to finish this book who would continually asking me how it was going. Please ask someone you trust who also needs to start feeling good at work to embark on this mission with you. It’s also way more fun achieving change together.

What You’ve Built So Far

✔ Learned to find the gold in work blunders in order to maximize learning and future success.

✔ Assumed responsibility from now on when it comes to what you create over the course of your career. It’s in your hands.

✔ Taken ownership of what’s in your control in order to have the biggest bang for your buck when you take action.
