We live - and we die. If death is our final fate, why aren’t our lives filled with more pleasure?
Why do we place so much pressure on ourselves and others?
Why do we remain stuck in a daily grind? Why do we not fully enjoy our life journey?
What might the world look like if we replaced our stress with pleasure?
These are some of the questions Anshu poses in her book, Pressure to Pleasure: A Seven Pillar Approach to Living your Best Life.
According to the American Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), up to 90% of all illness and diseases are stress related.
The pressures and stress of life have affected us as a society. Anshu's mission is to inspire individuals around the world to optimize their time on earth; by transforming the burdens and pressures of modern life into one filled with pleasure. To guide you on this path, Anshu provides a very simple framework of Seven Pillars; an alchemical toolbox brimming with ancient methodologies like shamanism, yoga, and tantra; combined with modern scientific research. This unique set of tools helps you live your optimum life in every moment.
We cannot control what happens in our lives, but we can shift from pressure to pleasure using these methods.
A former Silicon Valley executive, Anshu grew up in India. From an early age, pressure dominated her life. At the age of 40, unhappy, unemployed, and on the brink of depression, Anshu began to question the meaning and purpose of life. Through her readings and explorations over many years, Anshu discovered that pleasure was the key to creating and sustaining a fulfilling, satisfying and joyful life. The kind of pleasure that makes us feel alive, vital, vibrant - and in some cases, even looking and feeling younger!
This book will motivate you to adopt tools and thought processes that can infuse greater pleasure into your life.
Pleasure is not just about sex. In childhood, it is a primal concept, encouraging our sense of curiosity and exploration. In adulthood, pleasure remains an essential nutrient, meant to contribute to our well being, each and every day.
Chapter 1 - The State of Pleasure
The book opens with Anshu’s journey; including the high levels of stress & pressure that she first encountered in childhood. By embarking on a new path in adulthood, Anshu realized that life is meant to be experienced in a state of pleasure.
Chapter 2 - Life In Modern Times
The majority of adults around the world are living in the intense shadow of stress. Global statistics confirm that depression, anxiety, and lifestyle diseases - like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes - are on the rise. This chapter explores how human beings have manufactured a world almost too stressful to bear.
Chapter 3 What is ‘Real’ Pleasure?
An exploration of different meanings and perceptions of pleasure. Why is pleasure so necessary for us humans? How does a search for a life of pleasure also empower us to feel more alive? A survey of scientific research on pleasure hormones, and an examination of various kinds of pleasure.
Chapter 4 Misconceptions and Limiting Beliefs
When people talk about pleasure, the usual reference is to sexual pleasure. However, the meaning of pleasure is broader, covering much more ground that is often overlooked. This chapter delves into the misconceptions and limiting beliefs we hold about pleasure, as well as their origins.
Chapter 5 The Seven Pillars of Aliveness
This chapter introduces the seven foundational pillars of aliveness that establish a foundation for living an optimal life of pleasure. These seven pillars are a thoughtful and workable combination of ancient wisdom, modern scientific research and personal stories that have been proven to help us live our best life. Subsequent chapters introduce each pillar in detail.
Chapter 6 The First Pillar - Self love and Acceptance
The notion of self-love has been broached by self-help gurus and proponents of new age philosophies. But we continue to live in contempt of ourselves, rather than in full acceptance. This chapter identifies specific tools that readers are invited to explore, while ushering more self-love and acceptance into their lives.
Chapter 7 The Second Pillar - Feel All Your Emotions
From an early age, many of us have been taught to keep our emotions to ourselves. Carrying this message with us into adulthood, we learn to suppress many of our emotions, including joy and pleasure. This chapter describes techniques that help you reconnect with your emotions every day, as a way of feeling more alive.
Chapter 8 Third Pillar - Release The Blocks
Shame, fear and guilt are major blocks due to which we stop feeling pleasure. Imagine creating a life for yourself that is devoid of shame, fear and guilt. The tools in this chapter will help you release those blocks, so you can start to feel pleasure in everything you do.
Chapter 9 Fourth Pillar - Awaken Your Senses
We absorb our environment through the senses. Since our eyes (for those who can see) dominate all other senses, we have adapted by taking in most information from what we perceive visually. This chapter teaches you techniques to slow down and enhance each of your senses - including an innovative way to enjoy your food. A promise, that food will never taste the same!
Chapter 10 Fifth Pillar - Get out of your head.. into Your Body
The feeling of aliveness is felt in the body, not in the mind. Learn tools to get out of your mind and get into your body. Prepare your body to feel more pleasure whether its enjoying a piece of chocolate or some fun in the bedroom.
Chapter 11 Cultivate Your Life-Force Energy
The crux is this: Our bodies are composed of energy; so is our environment, our food and our breath. In this chapter, you will learn techniques that sages have used when living in harsh environments, without access to food. In order to survive, they harnessed energy from within themselves and from the environment. By adopting these techniques, you can reach a state of high energy in only a few minutes. But a daily practice is the best way to cultivate a sustained and optimal level of energy
Chapter 12 Design Your Life for Pleasure
Our home, work and external environment needs to be conducive to living a life of pleasure. I will teach you how to design your life around pleasure and feeling alive and how that can help you with living your most optimum life.
Chapter 13 The Pleasure Formulas - Shift state quickly from pressure to pleasure
In this chapter, specific formulas are provided which are proven to deal with stressful situations such as breakups and other traumatic situations. Other scenarios in which such a shift can happen include preparing for a date or a high-stakes business meeting.
Chapter 14 Simple Pleasure Practices for Daily Life
Are you looking for a simple way or a shortcut to getting started? If so, begin by following the daily practices set out in this chapter, and watch your life begins to unfold.
Chapter 15 - The Journey Continues... Live a Life of Pleasure
The book concludes with an invitation to take 100% responsibility for living your life in a state of pleasure. This chapter shows you how to create your own Pleasure pledge, and integrate rituals and practices into your daily life ; all based on the tools and techniques that appear in this book

Excerpt from Chapter 1 - My Journey
The Wakeup Call
"The greatest thing happening in your life at this moment is that you are ALIVE" - Sadhguru
I didn’t want to live. I was depressed and sad; an Indian woman living in America, in an abusive marriage, with nowhere to go. The words of my father and Indian society were etched in my mind: Indian women do not get divorced. Before I got married, I even signed a paper stating that I would never get divorced. When my marriage started to fall apart, I felt completely stuck, imagining that this was IT; this was how the rest of my life was going to be like.
I wanted to kill myself. My life was meaningless, and I was unworthy. Each day I felt as if I was drowning in a whirlpool, caving under too much stress and pressure. I questioned the reason for my existence.
Then the towers collapsed and more than 3,000 innocent people lost their lives over the course of one dark day in America. That day, the reality of life hit me. I realized that I actually wanted to LIVE. Once I understood that death can happen at any moment, I knew that I wasn’t ready to die. This was my first wake-up call - on Sept 11th, 2001, one of the darkest days of humanity. The untimely and unexpected deaths that had consumed so many lives, jolted me out of the very unhappy hamster wheel that I was on. For the first time the thought occurred to me; if I died that very day , what kind of life would I have lived, and what would the point have been of such an unfulfilled life?
This sudden realization gave me the courage to break the norms and bonds that an Indian woman is never supposed to break. Throughout our lives, we are conditioned to live under fear, shame and guilt. We are taught to devote our lives to our husbands and their families - no matter how abusive they are towards us. The society and families generally condemn women if they decide to take ownership of their lives. More on ‘Fear’,’Shame’ and ‘Guilt’ later in the book.
In the end, I left my abusive marriage and my dream home in Silicon Valley, to move to a little studio in San Francisco. I left with few material possessions. For the first time in my life, in the beautiful, cold, foggy, windy city of San Francisco, I finally experienced the taste of freedom - and the simple pleasure of being ALIVE and feeling free. I decided to dedicate myself to living my BEST life. Most importantly, I developed a LOVE of life and began seeing the world with a different outlook. I still remember walking down the streets of San Francisco - my new hometown, with Toffee, my sweetest dog and loyal companion, feeling happy and full of life. Finally, I was able to live some parts of my life on my own terms....
Excerpt from Chapter 12 - Design Your Life for Pleasure
If I had to recommend just one action that could bring more pleasure into your life, it would be this: 'Slow down'.
Starting from childhood, we are taught to always be doing something. We find ourselves running from one activity to another, one task to another, without stopping to catch our breath. Imagine how many people around the world wake up every morning, get ready, get to work, work all day, come back home, cook dinner, watch TV and sleep. Only to follow exactly the same routine the next day. It’s a non-stop grind. People are stuck in this cycle without even realizing it. They live from one weekend to the next, never stopping to savor the pleasures that surround them. This causes chronic stress and after a while they end up feeling empty inside, as if the life-force has been sucked out. we are left just like a zombie running on the hamster wheel. Does this remind you of someone?
One day you will wake up and life will have passed you by - before you had a chance to experience true pleasure. If you haven’t stopped or slowed down, you haven’t taken the time to feel more pleasure. So slow down. Sure, you may have heard and read about the importance of slowing down; but have you actually given it a try? Why not do it - slow down = for the very sake of feeling pleasure, if for nothing else? Step number 1 in feeling more pleasure is to slow down!!!
What does it mean to slow down? It means there is spaciousness in your day; and that you are present with yourself and your environment. You notice butterflies in your garden or in your stomach. Whether you breathe slowly,or quickly, you observe your breath, taking time to savor the moment. Slowing down means making more time in the day to do nothing, so you can experience pleasure. Try doing different activities at a slower pace: walking, talking, chopping food. Slow down wherever and whenever you can. Take a deep breath - and notice how it feels.
This has been an important learning for someone who is as impatient as I am. I like to be on the go, so I am always multitasking. I always want to be first. But, as part of my pleasure practice, I decided to create spaciousness in my life - which meant slowing down. As I have learned to slow down, I find myself becoming even more productive and less stressed than before even though it felt counter intuitive at first.
Take breaks throughout the day to slow down; notice the state of your body, the state of your mind, and your energy levels. You might find that just by stopping to observe and breathe deeply for a few minutes, is enough to refill your cup of energy, aliveness and pleasure.
From a young age, we are taught to be competitive. Although being first can be beneficial, it’s not true for experiencing more pleasure and aliveness. Nowadays, I walk slowly, I eat slowly, I dance slowly, I breathe slowly, and I drive slowly. I have also found that slowing down doesn’t take away from my time in the day as I am also less stressed. It’s a conscious decision and a choice to not be under pressure and to slow down.
Pleasure Practice -
As a first step in bringing more pleasure in your life - Slow down all your activities and start observing/being more present in your life.
Notice, how does it feel to become slower. Are you noticing more? Are you feeling more spacious? Are there areas of your life where you need to slow down even more? Every time you feel like you are rushing, stop and wonder what you can do to create more spaciousness in your life.
Try this experiment: Pick something simple that you love to do every day - for example, drinking a cup of coffee in the morning. Just before you pick the cup up from the table, say to yourself, "I'm going to pay attention to this really pleasurable experience for as long as I can." Then bring as much of your attention as you can to taking that first sip. Keep your attention on everything about that first taste and how damn good it feels.
If you are like me, you'll take a really good sip of coffee. That's pleasure. Then your thoughts will start to crowd into your experience, talking about it, wanting more of it, thinking of what else you should be doing instead of enjoying the coffee, and all that.
It's totally fine to have thoughts. Just gently bring your attention back and have another sip.
You can try this with any other activity like going to walks, noticing the beauty in your garden or looking into eyes of your partner. Taking the moment to fully savor the experience and pleasure that arises from it.
