Looking into a few historical accounts this week, I was able to discover that there was indeed a man named Phillips (surname) who fathered two children with my Scottish great-great grandmother. The man's first name was not listed but his career was, "Sailor." There is evidence that my grandmother and this sailor named Phillips never wed.
This is an exciting first step and more research is needed. A visit to the Scottish archives would provide additional information not available in the U.S. I look forward to finding out more about the Phillips name and possible tie into the notorious Captain John Phillips.
